High variation in last male sperm precedence and genital morphology in the emerald damselfly, Lestes sponsa

2020

Abstract In organisms in which individuals mate multiply, knowledge of the proportion of offspring sired by the last male to mate (P2) under field conditions is important for a thorough understanding of how sexual selection works in nature. In many insect groups, pronounced intraspecific variation in P2 is commonplace. Interestingly, however, in stark contrast to these observations, compilation of P2 data in dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata) indicates that a high P2, seldom below 0.95, is a feature of this taxon. Here we used double digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing to generate a panel of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with which we could determine paternity and …

The Sensory Neocortex and Associative Memory

2016

Most behaviors in mammals are directly or indirectly guided by prior experience and therefore depend on the ability of our brains to form memories. The ability to form an association between an initially possibly neutral sensory stimulus and its behavioral relevance is essential for our ability to navigate in a changing environment. The formation of a memory is a complex process involving many areas of the brain. In this chapter we review classic and recent work that has shed light on the specific contribution of sensory cortical areas to the formation of associative memories. We discuss synaptic and circuit mechanisms that mediate plastic adaptations of functional properties in individual …

The growth of next-generation sequencing (NGS) datasets poses a challenge to the alignment of reads to reference genomes in terms of alignment quality and execution speed. Some available aligners have been shown to obtain high quality mappings at the expense of long execution times. Finding fast yet accurate software solutions is of high importance to research, since availability and size of NGS datasets continue to increase. In this work we present an efficient parallelization approach for NGS short-read alignment on multi-core clusters. Our approach takes advantage of a distributed shared memory programming model based on the new UPC++ language. Experimental results using the CUSHAW3 alig…

Telomere Length Determines TERRA and R-Loop Regulation through the Cell Cycle

2017

Maintenance of a minimal telomere length is essential to prevent cellular senescence. When critically short telomeres arise in the absence of telomerase, they can be repaired by homology-directed repair (HDR) to prevent premature senescence onset. It is unclear why specifically the shortest telomeres are targeted for HDR. We demonstrate that the non-coding RNA TERRA accumulates as HDR-promoting RNA-DNA hybrids (R-loops) preferentially at very short telomeres. The increased level of TERRA and R-loops, exclusively at short telomeres, is due to a local defect in RNA degradation by the Rat1 and RNase H2 nucleases, respectively. Consequently, the coordination of TERRA degradation with telomere r…

parSRA: A framework for the parallel execution of short read aligners on compute clusters

2018

The growth of next generation sequencing datasets poses as a challenge to the alignment of reads to reference genomes in terms of both accuracy and speed. In this work we present parSRA, a parallel framework to accelerate the execution of existing short read aligners on distributed-memory systems. parSRA can be used to parallelize a variety of short read alignment tools installed in the system without any modification to their source code. We show that our framework provides good scalability on a compute cluster for accelerating the popular BWA-MEM and Bowtie2 aligners. On average, it is able to accelerate sequence alignments on 16 64-core nodes (in total, 1024 cores) with speedup of 10.48 …

La tutela del menor víctima de la violencia de género : marco normativo procesal y penal

2021

The Spanish legal system provides specific protection for victims of gender violence, the paper addresses the legal situation of minors who are dependent on women victims of this type of violence. It analyses their procedural situation and, in particular, the criminal remedies for their protection. In a particular way, the aggravating circumstance of committing the act in their presence and the penalties that affect parental authority are examined.

La patria potestad prorrogada y la patria potestad rehabilitada en el nuevo proyecto de ley de reforma de la legislación civil y procesal para el apo…

2021

It is intended to analyze and reflect in the present work about the institution of the extension of parental authority and parental authority rehabilitated in the new regulation in the Draft Law that reforms the civil and procedural legislation to support people with disabilities in the exercise of their legal capacity. In this project, the extended parental authority and the rehabilitated parental authority are eliminated from the scope of disability, following a criterion that demands the treatment of people with disabilities with the attention that their specific situation requires, eliminating a regime that seems contrary to the system of promoting the autonomy of adults with disabiliti…

Derecho de acceso a la información : el desafío de una sociedad guiada por la transparencia en el ordenamiento jurídico español

2021

This study will address the two aspects of rights linked to information, the right to information and the right to information, to end with the formulation of some conclusions that, distancing themselves from a mere summary, seek to encourage doctrinal and political debate on assumptions that, being peacefully settled, should be reformulated in light of the repeated crisis of transparency. For this, it will be articulated by addressing, first, the most significant aspects of the right to information and its link with the right to freedom of expression, as well as the new challenges that these rights face in the digital age, to then analyze the right to information, its regulation in the Spa…

Contra la patologización intensiva en términos de derechos humanos: Activismo gordo en Argentina

2020

This work addresses the way in which Argentine Fat Activism has developed, in recent years, the demand for depathologization of fatness, taking elements from critical discourses on the health of fat people to frame them in a perspective typical of the Human Rights. First, the contemporary fat body is described in terms of stigma and discrimination, especially in the health field. Then, they refer to a series of critical positions on the pathologization and medicalization of fatness from the biomedical perspective, Fat Studies and Fat Activism. Lastly, a series of interventions that the Argentine activist collective Taller Hacer la Vista Gorda produced between 2017 and 2020 were considered, …

The picture superiority effect in associative memory: A developmental study.

2018

We tested whether semantic relatedness between to-be-remembered items and item presentation format (pictorial vs. verbal) affects associative recall. Fifty-nine children (11-13 years old) and forty young adults (age 18-30) completed a learning and recall task for semantically related (e.g., padlock-key) and unrelated (e.g., lemon-piano) picture-picture, word-picture, and word-word pairs. The data revealed memory advantage for semantically related item pairs, and for pictures compared to words. A picture superiority effect was found exclusively for pure picture pairs. Despite pronounced differences in memory accuracy, the effect of semantic relatedness and the picture superiority effect were…
