The Impact of CSR/ESG on the Cost of Capital: A Case Study of US Companies
2021
The paper identifies the direction and strength of the relationship between individual ESG elements (and ESG as a whole) and the weighted average cost of capital, the cost of equity, and debt. The research was based on US market company data from the Thomson Reuters Eikon database. Some modifications have been applied to the survey methodology compared to that previously used in the literature, making it possible to present comprehensive and more congruent results. Identifying the direction and strength of the relationship between individual elements of ESG and ESG as a whole and the cost of capital (weighted average, equity, and debt). Design/Methodology/Approach: This paper incorporates an…
A recent judgment of the Supreme Court narrows the rights of banks, as mortgagee creditors, to seize the assets of the debtor notwithstanding bankruptcy proceedings, according to paragraph 41, subsection 2, of the Italian Consolidated Law on Bank…
Growing Like Germany: Local Public Debt, Local Banks, Low Private Investment
2021
The paper uses a panel of more than 1m German firms over 2010-2016, to provide the first firm-bank level evidence of local crowding out for a developed economy characterized by low interest rates and fiscal austerity. Our mechanism relies on two structural features of Germany's banking landscape: the local segmentation of credit markets for small and medium-sized firms (SME) and the role of local public banks in local public finance. Local public banks dominate lending to small and medium firms in Germany and also have an explicit mandate to lend to the local public sector. With spreads on local government debt at all-time lows, local public banks tried to break even, using their market pow…
Ecology, environmental requirements and conservation of corticioid fungi occupying small diameter dead wood
2016
The increasing human impact upon the biosphere of earth is causing profound changes across all spatial scales. The ability to cope with human-induced disturbance varies among organisms; specialist species are more negatively affected than generalist species. Forests are among the most heavily affected ecosystems; especially the dead wood associated organisms are in peril. The earlier research has strongly focused on large diameter dead wood and associated species. The aim of this thesis was to investigate small diameter dead wood and collect systematic information about species richness and abundance as well as habitat and substrate preferences of associated corticioid fungi.
2017
The article reconstructs Galen’s position on the phenomenon of solecism, by examining the occurrences of σολοικίζω and terms related to it in the Galenic corpus. Solecism was debated in the II century A.D. as part of the more general ‘language issue’. Against the Atticistic trends that were very widespread at that time, Galen appears to be relatively tolerant of solecisms which does not imply a distortion of medical knowledge. Yet, his attitude is very different as regards linguistic errors due to a mistaken view of physical and medical theories.
The Role of Professors in the Formation of Finnish Parliamentary Life: The Struggle between Two Conceptions of Parliament
2017
The Frankfurt Parliament (1848–49) was subsequently dismissively referred to as the “Professors’ Parliament” due to its heavy representation of scholars and the academic style of its lengthy discussions. Professors have played a prominent role in the deliberations and development of other European assemblies, too. This article examines the role of professors in the formation of Finnish parliamentary life. It moreover underlines the close relationship between the academia and national politics in late nineteenth-century Finland, starting from the European revolutions of 1848. The article highlights how politically active professors, together with the newspaper press, were crucial in transfe…
The issue of the secret ballot in the Cambridge and Oxford Union Societies, c.1830–72: an extension of the nineteenth-century parliamentary culture o…
2015
Summary. In this article, debating societies are considered as an inherent part of the formation of a parliamentary culture in Britain. Despite the fact that the nineteenth-century Cambridge and Oxford Union Societies were considered to be ‘training grounds’ for statesmen, their debating practices have not been systematically studied in relation to national politics. This is largely due to the fact that the role of debate has remained understated in studies of parliamentary history, even though it is one of the fundamental political features in the Westminster system. Nineteenth-century parliamentary debate did not just occur for its own sake, rather it had a constitutional and political di…
