Analysis of metabolic pathways by the growth of cells in the presence of organic solvents

1996

A new approach to the analysis of metabolic pathways involving poorly water-soluble intermediates is proposed. It relies upon the ability of the hydrophobic intermediates formed by a sequence of intracellular reactions to cross the membrane(s) and partition between aqueous and organic phases, when cells are incubated in the presence of a nonpolar and nontoxic organic solvent. As a result of this thermodynamically driven efflux of the formed intermediates from the cell, they accumulate in the organic medium in sufficient quantities for GC-MS analysis and identification. This enables direct determination of the sequence of chemical reactions involved with no requirement for the isolation of e…

Defining classifier regions for WSD ensembles using word space features

2006

Based on recent evaluation of word sense disambiguation (WSD) systems [10], disambiguation methods have reached a standstill. In [10] we showed that it is possible to predict the best system for target word using word features and that using this 'optimal ensembling method' more accurate WSD ensembles can be built (3-5% over Senseval state of the art systems with the same amount of possible potential remaining). In the interest of developing if more accurate ensembles, w e here define the strong regions for three popular and effective classifiers used for WSD task (Naive Bayes – NB, Support Vector Machine – SVM, Decision Rules – D) using word features (word grain, amount of positive and neg…

Interactions between volatiles and lipids in complex systems

1998

Partition equilibria of three aroma compounds in three different biphasic systems were studied by a liquid/liquid partition technique to investigate interactions that occur between volatiles and lipids in biphasic solutions. The lipids used were linoleic acid and ricinoleic acid and tetradecane as a model. The three aroma compounds were ethyl acetate, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, and oct-1-en-3-ol. The results showed that the intermolecular forces involved were weak. Infrared spectroscopy was then performed on binary systems (tetradecane and linoleic acid or aroma compound) and on ternary systems (tetradecane, linoleic acid, and aroma compound) to determine the nature of the interactions. This met…

Role of biological control agents and physical treatments in maintaining the quality of fresh and minimally-processed fruit and vegetables

2019

International audience; Fruit and vegetables are an important part of human diets and provide multiple health benefits. However, due to the short shelf-life of fresh and minimally-processed fruit and vegetables, significant losses occur throughout the food distribution chain. Shelf-life extension requires preserving both the quality and safety of food products. The quality of fruit and vegetables, either fresh or fresh-cut, depends on many factors and can be determined by analytical or sensory evaluation methods. Among the various technologies used to maintain the quality and increase shelf-life of fresh and minimally-processed fruit and vegetables, biological control is a promising approac…

Loss of habitats, naturalness and species diversity in Eurasian forest landscapes

2010

Abstract Man has exploited land and forests in Western and Central Europe longer and more intensively than in Northern Europe and further east in Eurasia. We estimated forest naturalness and modelled expected biodiversity loss in seven different landscapes (2500 km2 each) in the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Poland, St. Petersburg (Western European Russia), Perm (Eastern European Russia), and Irkutsk (Central Siberia) across the distribution of Pinus sylvestris L. in Eurasia. Field inventories showed that the mean living tree volumes were relatively similar in the studied sites, but the volumes of dead wood differed greatly. In Irkutsk and Perm the volume of dead trees per ha was about 5–10…

Cell state prediction through distributed estimation of transmit power

2019

Determining the state of each cell, for instance, cell outages, in a densely deployed cellular network is a difficult problem. Several prior studies have used minimization of drive test (MDT) reports to detect cell outages. In this paper, we propose a two step process. First, using the MDT reports, we estimate the serving base station’s transmit power for each user. Second, we learn summary statistics of estimated transmit power for various networks states and use these to classify the network state on test data. Our approach is able to achieve an accuracy of 96% on an NS-3 simulation dataset. Decision tree, random forest and SVM classifiers were able to achieve a classification accuracy of…

An Interactive Framework for Offline Data-Driven Multiobjective Optimization

2020

We propose a framework for solving offline data-driven multiobjective optimization problems in an interactive manner. No new data becomes available when solving offline problems. We fit surrogate models to the data to enable optimization, which introduces uncertainty. The framework incorporates preference information from a decision maker in two aspects to direct the solution process. Firstly, the decision maker can guide the optimization by providing preferences for objectives. Secondly, the framework features a novel technique for the decision maker to also express preferences related to maximum acceptable uncertainty in the solutions as preferred ranges of uncertainty. In this way, the d…

A New Paradigm in Interactive Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization

2020

Over the years, scalarization functions have been used to solve multiobjective optimization problems by converting them to one or more single objective optimization problem(s). This study proposes a novel idea of solving multiobjective optimization problems in an interactive manner by using multiple scalarization functions to map vectors in the objective space to a new, so-called preference incorporated space (PIS). In this way, the original problem is converted into a new multiobjective optimization problem with typically fewer objectives in the PIS. This mapping enables a modular incorporation of decision maker’s preferences to convert any evolutionary algorithm to an interactive one, whe…

A computational approach for the assessment of executive functions in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder

2019

Previous studies on obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) showed impairments in executive domains, particularly in cognitive inhibition. In this perspective, the use of virtual reality showed huge potential in the assessment of executive functions; however, unfortunately, to date, no study on the assessment of these patients took advantage of the use of virtual environments. One of the main problems faced within assessment protocols is the use of a limited number of variables and tools when tailoring a personalized program. The main aim of this study was to provide a heuristic decision tree for the future development of tailored assessment protocols. To this purpose, we conducted a study that…
