Confirmation of the new isotope 178Pb
2016
The extremely neutron-deficient isotope 178Pb has been produced. The GREAT spectrometer at the focal plane position of the gas-filled separator RITU was used to study the α decay of 178Pb and its α-decay chain through α-α correlations. The α decay was measured to have an energy and half-life of Eα= 7610(30) keV and t1/2 = 0.21+0.21 −0.08 ms, respectively. The half-life is consistent with recent theoretical calculations using the Coulomb and proximity potential model. The α-decay reduced width and hindrance factor for 178Pb were deduced and correspond to an unhindered l = 0 transition. In addition, the mass excess of 178Pb and the α-decay Q value were calculated from the experimental results…
High-sensitivity study of levels in 30Al following β decay of 30Mg
2016
γ -ray and fast-timing spectroscopy were used to study levels in 30Al populated following the β− decay of 30Mg. Five new transitions and three new levels were located in 30Al. A search was made to identify the third 1+ state expected at an excitation energy of ∼2.5 MeV. Two new levels were found, at 3163.9 and 3362.5 keV, that are firm candidates for this state. Using the advanced time-delayed (ATD) βγγ (t) method we have measured the lifetime of the 243.8-keV state to be T1/2 = 15(4) ps, which implies that the 243.8-keV transition is mainly of M1 character. Its fast B(M1; 2+ → 3+) value of 0.10(3) W.u. is in very good agreement with the USD shell-model prediction of 0.090 W.u. The 1801.5-k…
α-decay spectroscopy of the N = 130 isotones 218Ra and 220Th: Mitigation of α-particle energy summing with implanted nuclei
2019
An analysis technique has been developed in order to mitigate energy summing due to sequential short-lived α decays from nuclei implanted into a silicon detector. Using this technique, α-decay spectroscopy of the N=130 isotones 218Ra (Z=88) and 220Th (Z=90) has been performed. The energies of the α particles emitted in the 218Ra→214Rn and 220Th→216Ra ground-state-to-ground-state decays have been measured to be 8381(4) keV and 8818(13) keV, respectively. The half-lives of the ground states of 218Ra and 220Th have been measured to be 25.99(10) μs and 10.4(4) μs, respectively. The half-lives of the ground states of the α-decay daughters, 214Rn and 216Ra, have been measured to be 259(3) ns and …
Muon-capture strength functions in intermediate nuclei of 0νββ decays
2019
Capture rates of ordinary muon capture (OMC) to the intermediate nuclei of neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decays of current experimental interest are computed. The corresponding OMC (capture-rate) strength functions have been analyzed in terms of multipole decompositions. The computed low-energy OMC-rate distribution to 76 As is compared with the available data of Zinatulina et al. [Phys. Rev. C 99, 024327 (2019)]. The present OMC computations are performed using the Morita-Fujii formalism by extending the original formalism beyond the leading order. The participant nuclear wave functions are obtained in extended no-core single-particle model spaces using the spherical version of proton-ne…

Determination of β-decay ground state feeding of nuclei of importance for reactor applications
2020
In β-decay studies the determination of the decay probability to the ground state (g.s.) of the daughter nucleus often suffers from large systematic errors. The difficulty of the measurement is related to the absence of associated delayed γ-ray emission. In this work we revisit the 4πγ−β method proposed by Greenwood and collaborators in the 1990s, which has the potential to overcome some of the experimental difficulties. Our interest is driven by the need to determine accurately the β-intensity distributions of fission products that contribute significantly to the reactor decay heat and to the antineutrinos emitted by reactors. A number of such decays have large g.s. branches. The method is…

Spectroscopy of [sub 199,201]At
2015
The excited states of 199At and 201At were studied using fusion evaporation reactions, a gas-filled recoil separator and various tagging methods. The level scheme of 201At was extended a lot including a cascade of magnetic dipole transitions, that is suggested to form a shears band. In addition, a 29/2+ [T1/2 = 3.39(9) s] isomeric state was observed. The 29/2+ state is suggested to originate from the p(h9/2) j200Po; 11i configuration, and it depopulates through 269-keV E2 and 339-keV E3 transitions. In both nuclei 199,201At we have observed also the isomeric 1/2+ [T1/2 = 273(9), 45(3) ms, respectively] intruder state, that is suggested to originate from the p(s1/2)1 configuration. The 1…
Precise Determination of the Unperturbed 8B Neutrino Spectrum
2012
The measurement was performed at the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands.; A measurement of the final state distribution of the 8B $\beta$ decay, obtained by implanting a 8B beam in a double-sided silicon strip detector, is reported here. The present spectrum is consistent with a recent independent precise measurement performed by our collaboration at the IGISOL facility, Jyvâskylä [O. S. Kirsebom et al., Phys. Rev. C 83, 065802 (2011)]. It shows discrepancies with previously measured spectra, leading to differences in the derived neutrino spectrum. Thanks to a low detection threshold, the neutrino spectrum is for the first time directly ex…
