Vitamin D Deficiency in Cushing’s Disease: Before and After Its Supplementation
2022
Background: The primary objective of the study was to assess serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] values in patients with Cushing’s disease (CD), compared to controls. The secondary objective was to assess the response to a load of 150,000 U of cholecalciferol. Methods: In 50 patients with active CD and 48 controls, we evaluated the anthropometric and biochemical parameters, including insulin sensitivity estimation by the homeostatic model of insulin resistance, Matsuda Index and oral disposition index at baseline and in patients with CD also after 6 weeks of cholecalciferol supplementation. Results: At baseline, patients with CD showed a higher frequency of hypovitaminosis deficiency (p = 0…
Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria in Patients with Common Variable Immunodeficiency
2018
Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a predominantly antibody deficiency and is one of the most common primary immunodeficiencies in adulthood. Replacement therapy with Ig has significantly reduced infectious complications; however, malignant, autoimmune, and inflammatory diseases are still current major causes of morbidity and mortality. In recent years, interest has increased regarding allergic manifestations that may be associated with primary immunodeficiencies; however, no data are currently available on chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). In this report, the authors describe CSU in patients with CVID attending their centre. Three CVID patients were affected by CSU and were unre…
Conductas de riesgo y actitudes relacionadas con la infección por vih/sida en hsh
2014
Abstract:The aim of this investigation is to analyze sexual risk behaviors and attitudes for HIV/AIDS infection of MSM. The ENSI was administrated to 202 men, 168 homosexuals and 24 bisexuals, from 14 to 57 years. The results show a high confidence in condoms as a method of HIV prevention (75.7% very effective and 28.1% effective); however the systematic use of a condom is moderate in anal intercourse (54.64%) and in vaginal intercourse (49.05%) and very low in oral sex (6.22%). There is a low perceived probability (20.28%) and moderate fear (41.25%) become infected with HIV. 20.3% report having drunk alcohol in the last relationship and 5.4% say other drugs. These results should be conside…
Increased susceptibility of microcytic red blood cells to in vitro oxidative stress.
1995
Oxidative damage to erythrocytes in thalassaemia has been related to generation of free radicals by an excess of denaturated alpha- or beta-globin chains, intracellular iron overload and low concentration of normal haemoglobin (HGB). Two good indicators of such oxidative damage are the high red blood cell (RBC) malonyldialdehyde (MDA) production detected following exogenous oxidant stress and the decrease of pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase (P5N), the most sensitive enzyme to SH-group damage in vivo. Conflicting data, however, have so far accumulated in the literature concerning differences in oxidative damage between the different forms of thalassaemia and iron deficiency anaemia (IDA). In the p…
Reproductive Dysfunction in Classical and Nonclassical Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Due to 21-Hydroxylase Deficiency
2021
Patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) both with severe (classical CAH) and mild (nonclassical NCAH) forms exhibit a wide spectrum of reproductive dysfunction. In this review, only CAH cases with 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHd) will be discussed, as they represent almost all of the patients in reproductive clinical settings.
D vitamīns, tā deficīts un hipervitaminoze
2020
Young People’s Ambiguous and Complex Responses on HIV/AIDS in Cameroon
2017
In the large cities of Cameroon, early sexual relations are a major problem for young people due to the risk of unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS, in this population that has not yet mastered protection and which is ill prepared to convince often older sexual partners to use condoms. The HIV/AIDS epidemic can be analysed as an exogenous trauma that has not given rise to an immediate national response at institutional level, in spite of the pressure and priorities imposed from outside. The survey was aimed at understanding how young people build the idea of protection and risk faced with HIV, and identifying their practices and their relations with protective pract…
Risk of Low Energy Availability, Disordered Eating, Exercise Addiction, and Food Intolerances in Female Endurance Athletes
2022
Relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) is a complex syndrome describing health and performance consequences of low energy availability (LEA) and is common among female endurance athletes. Various underlying causes of LEA have been reported, including disordered eating behavior (DE), but studies investigating the association with exercise addiction and food intolerances are lacking. Therefore, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between DE, exercise addiction and food intolerances in athletes at risk of LEA compared to those with low risk. Female endurance athletes, 18–35 years, training ≥5 times/week were recruited in Norway, Sweden, Ireland, and Ge…
Prevalence and associations of injury and illness among high school elite sport-students in the south of Norway
2018
Master's thesis Sports Science ME517 - University of Agder 2018 Introduction Youth participating in sports are often associated with a healthy lifestyle, however illness and injuries are frequently reported in sports. The aims for this master thesis were; (1) to examine the prevalence of sport injuries and illnesses among elite sport students at high school with regard to sport group and (2) to examine anthropometry, bone health, performance variables, energy availability and sleep time with associations to sport injuries and illness prevalence in the same sample. Methods Thirty-six high school elite sport students, endurance athletes (n=24) and ball game athletes (n=12) [age: 16.3±0.2 year…
Extracellular vesicles and high‐density lipoproteins: Exercise and oestrogen‐responsive small RNA carriers
2023
Decreased systemic oestrogen levels (i.e., menopause) affect metabolic health. However, the detailed mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. Both oestrogens and exercise have been shown to improve metabolic health, which may be partly mediated by circulating microRNA (c-miR) signalling. In recent years, extracellular vesicles (EV) have increased interest in the field of tissue crosstalk. However, in many studies on EV-carried miRs, the co-isolation of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles with EVs has not been considered, potentially affecting the results. Here, we demonstrate that EV and HDL particles have distinct small RNA (sRNA) content, including both host and nonhost sRN…
