Mobility limitations and cognitive deficits as predictors of institutionalization among community-dwelling older people.

2006

<i>Purpose:</i> Mobility limitations and cognitive disorders have often been observed as risks for institutionalization. However, their combined effects on risk of institutionalization among initially community-dwelling older people have been less well reported. <i>Design:</i> A prospective cohort study with 10-year surveillance on institutionalization. <i>Subjects:</i> Study population (n = 476) consisted of 75- and 80-year-old people who were community-dwelling, had not been diagnosed with dementia, and participated in tests on walking speed and cognitive capacity at a research centre. <i>Measures:</i> Cognitive capacity was measured with th…

Heart Rate Variability Recordings are a Valid Non- Invasive Tool for Evaluating Soldiers’ Stress

2013

Heart Rate Variability Recordings are a Valid Non- Invasive Tool for Evaluating Soldiers’ Stress The purpose of the present study was to investigate physiological responses and to evaluate heart rate variability as a non-invasive stress indicator during a 72-hour military field training (MFT). Ten healthy male soldiers (age 20 ± 1 yr.) participated in MFT. They slept approximately 2 h/day and ate only army field rations. During MFT, the soldiers’ mean (±SD) energy expenditure was 4646 ± 674, energy intake 2200 ± 326, and energy deficit (ED) 2405 ± 890 kcal⋅day-1.Throughout the entire training period, serum total testosterone (TES) reduced from 19.0 ± 3.0 to 12.6 ± 6.2 nmol⋅l-1 (p<0.001)

Threshold Effects in the US Budget Deficit

2003

We contribute to the debate on whether the large U.S. federal budget deficits are sustainable in the long run. We model the U.S. government deficit per capita as a threshold autoregressive process. We find evidence that the U.S. budget deficit is sustainable in the long run and that economic policymakers will intervene to reduce per capita deficit only when it reaches a certain threshold.

Group-based intervention on attention and executive functions in the school context

2017

The objective of the study was to examine the effects of a group-based behavioural, cognitive and skills training intervention (Maltti) provided in schools for elementary school pupils with attention and executive function (EF) deficits. The treatment effects were identified by comparing an intervention group (n = 46) with a waitlist control group (n = 26). Specific effects of the intervention on behavioural deficits in attention and EF in a classroom setting as well as on academic skills were examined. Our analysis indicated that significant intervention effects could be found in the behavioural manifestation of attentional and executive skills in the classroom setting among children (n = …

Dictating the boundaries of ab/normality: a critical discourse analysis of the diagnostic criteria for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and h…

2017

In this article we report the findings of a critical discourse analysis of the diagnostic criteria for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and hyperkinetic disorder (HD) in two clinical manuals – Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition and International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition. We examine the actions (behaviors) that are said to indicate the presence of ADHD/HD and analyze what the inclusion of these actions reveals about the relationship between ADHD/HD, cultural knowledge, and values. Our analysis reveals that both manuals use subjective, value-laden language to construct a mentally ill individual in opposition to an unseen, supposed…

Galactic rotation curves in hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

2013

Generally, the dynamics of test particles around galaxies, as well as the corresponding mass deficit, is explained by postulating the existence of a hypothetical dark matter. In fact, the behavior of the rotation curves shows the existence of a constant velocity region, near the baryonic matter distribution, followed by a quick decay at large distances. In this work, we consider the possibility that the behavior of the rotational velocities of test particles gravitating around galaxies can be explained within the framework of the recently proposed hybrid metric-Palatini gravitational theory. The latter is constructed by modifying the metric Einstein-Hilbert action with an f(R) term in the P…

Determining Optimal Seasonal Irrigation Depth Based on Field Irrigation Uniformity and Economic Evaluations: Application for Onion Crop

2016

The crop water production function (WPF), representing the relationship between crop yield and seasonal irrigation water, is a useful tool for irrigation planning purposes. The objective of the paper is to propose a methodology to evaluate the optimal seasonal irrigation depth based on the crop production function, the field distribution uniformity, and economic considerations. An extended unpublished database experimentally obtained on the onion crop on the island of Kula, Hawaii, was initially used to assess the crop WPF. The combination between the crop WPF and the model representing the field distribution uniformity allowed determining the area subjected to underirrigation and overirrig…

Comparison of SWAP and FAO Agro-Hydrological Models to Schedule Irrigation of Wine Grapes

2012

This paper compares two agro-hydrological models that are used to schedule irrigation of a typical Mediterranean crop. In particular, a comparison between the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) model, which uses a black box approach, and the soil-water-atmosphere-plant (SWAP) model, which is based on the numerical analysis of Richards' equation, are shown for wine grape. The comparison was carried out for the 2005 and 2006 irrigation seasons and focused on hydrological balance components and on soil water contents. Next, the ordinary scheduling parameters were identified so that the performance of the two models, which aimed to evaluate the seasonal water requirements and the irrigatio…

EMPHASIZING MULTIPROFESSIONAL COLLABORATION TO MEET THE ICU PATIENTS NUTRITION NEEDS

2015

Many studies have shown that the standard of the nutrition of ICU-patients influence the patient results, measured by ICU-LOS (length of stay), hospital-LOS and mortality. The energy deficit accumulating during the first days of the ICU stay may play an important role for the patient results. After implementation of a multi-professional ICU nutrition protocol, including a broadly teaching/information phase for both nurses and anesthesiologists, we conducted a retrospective study.
