Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of th e most common effects of aging in men. Epidemiologists estimate that about one quarter of all men over 50 years of age suffer from BPH-derived voiding symptoms. Future demographic developments, with higher relative shares of older people, will increase the socioeconomic impact of this disease. Polder et al. (1994) calculated for the Netherlands that the treatment costs of BPH will double by 2035. Office visits for BPH related symptoms increased in the USA from 1.4 million in 1990 to 6 million in 1995, reflecting the increased public awareness of the problem and the increased desire for treatment (Kaplan et al. 1996).

Physical activity improves health and may delay the onset of several chronic diseases. For women in particular, the rate of these diseases accelerates at middle age; therefore it is important to identify the determinants of health-enhancing physical activity during midlife in this population. In this study, we focused on determinants that are unique to the female sex, such as childbearing and menopause. The main objective was to characterize the level of physical activity and differences between active and inactive middle-aged Finnish women. Pētījuma mērķis bija pārbaudīt saistību starp prezenteismu un personības iezīmēm: apzinīgumu, neirotismu, godīgumu-pieticību, ekstraversiju, labvēlīgumu un atvērtību pieredzei; vainas izjūtu un demogrāfiskajiem rādītājiem: dzimumu, vecumu, amatu un ienākumu līmeni. Pētījumā piedalījās 251 respondents – 200 sievietes un 51 vīrietis (M = 37,25, SD = 9,47 gadi). Papildu kopējai izlasei tika izskatītas arī apakšgrupas – klātienē (n=69) un attālināti strādājošie (n=182). Cumulative inertia or cumulative stress? Migration behaviour of Finnish graduates

An interesting yet largely unstudied question regarding labour migration behaviour and residence duration is whether migration becomes more or less likely over time. This paper analyses the determinants of residence duration for Finnish graduates. Our results affirm the importance of cumulative inertia as a determinant of migration. The longer a person stays in a region, the smaller are the hazard rates of migration. However, for those graduates who moved to a new region during their year of graduation, the propensity for repeat migration is particularly high during their first three years of residence.

Tiesiskā demokrātiskā valstī tautai, kas ir neatdalāmi saistīta ar valsti, ir tiesības iegūt informāciju par valstī notiekošajiem procesiem un aktuālajiem jautājumiem, kā rezultātā tauta kā indivīdu kopums ir spējīga realizēt valsts efektīvu līdzdalību saistošo lēmumu procedūrā. Taču tiesiskā demokrātiskā valstī vārda brīvība nav absolūta, līdzīgi kā daudzas citas pamattiesības, arī tā pakļaujas ierobežojumiem un nosacījumiem.
