Short- and long-term population dynamical consequences of asymmetric climate change in black grouse
2006
Temporal asymmetry in patterns of regional climate change may jeopardize the match between the proximate and ultimate cues of the timing of breeding. The consequences on short- and long-term population dynamics and trends as well as the underlying mechanisms are, however, often unknown. Using long-term data from Finland, we demonstrate that black grouse ( Tetrao tetrix ) have responded to spring warming by advancing both egg-laying and hatching. However, early summer (the time of hatching) has not advanced, and chicks have to face colder post-hatching conditions. Demonstrating that these conditions are critical to post-hatching survival, we show that chicks are increasingly suffering highe…
Control cuantitativo de la calidad en una empresa del sector servicios = Quantitative quality control in a company of the service industry
2013

Can We Really (All) Work Longer?
Trends in Healthy Life Expectancy According to Social Stratum in Germany
2013
Against the background of raising the retirement age to 67 years and the associated lengthening of working lifetimes in higher age groups, this article examines the question of the extent to which this political objective is covered by the health assets of the population. Here, we will first trace trends in “healthy” life expectancy among the total population for different points in time 1989, 1999 and 2009 on the basis of the data from the Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP) and analyse these against the background of social strata indicators such as income and educational levels. Among others, one significant result is the fact that social differences have a far greater effect on healthy li…
Campagnes, migrations internationales et nouvel ordre social ethnicisé. La zone viticole Utiel-Requena (Espagne)
2021
Utiel-Requena is a traditional wine-growing area in the province of Valencia (Spain), which has un…

THE HEALTHY NORDIC DIET AMONG OLDER INDIVIDUALS PREDICTS INCIDENT DISABILITY IN A 10-YEAR FOLLOW-UP
2017
We investigated whether adherence to the healthy Nordic diet among older individuals was associated with incident disability 10 years later. We studied 972 participants from the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study who were free of disability at baseline. At the mean age of 61 years the Nordic diet score (NDS) was calculated based on a validated food-frequency questionnaire that the participants filled in. Higher scores indicated better adherence to the healthy Nordic diet. At the mean age of 71 years, participants’ incident disability was assessed using a self-reported questionnaire and was based on two levels of disability: mobility difficulty (difficulty in walking 500 m) and self-care dependence…
Muscular strength of adult Special Olympians by country economic status
2017
There is a strong relationship between economic prosperity and health as well as between muscle strength and health (morbidity and mortality). However, very little research has concomitantly examined economic prosperity and muscular strength in the general population, and no studies have simultaneously examined these factors in a population of adults with intellectual disabilities. This study examined grip strength among adult Special Olympics participants by country economic status. A total of 12,132 (men = 65%) right and left hand grip strength records were available from the Special Olympics International (SOI) FUNFitness database. The 127 countries within the SOI dataset were grouped by…
Identity, Instrumental Self-Interest and Institutional Evaluations: Explaining Public Opinion on Common European Policies in Foreign Affairs and Defe…
2008
This paper addresses public opinion on common European policies in foreign affairs and defence. It proposes three models of support for common policies in these fields. Drawing on Eurobarometer data, the analysis shows that instrumental self-interest and territorial identities contribute considerably to explaining support for common foreign affairs and defence policies. Moreover, support for common policies is strongly driven by domain-specific evaluations of the European Union's performance. These findings suggest that popular support for common European policies in foreign affairs and defence has an experiential base. Thus, elites have an incentive to respond to public opinion when makin…
Life Satisfaction Among Children in Different Family Structures: A Comparative Study of 36 Western Societies
2010
This paper examines differences in life satisfaction among children in different family structures in 36 western, industrialised countries (n = 184 496). Children living with both biological parents reported higher levels of life satisfaction than children living with a single parent or parent–step-parent. Children in joint physical custody reported significantly higher levels of life satisfaction than their counterparts in other types of non-intact families. Controlling perceived family affluence, the difference between joint physical custody families and single mother or mother–stepfather families became non-significant. Difficulties in communicating with parents were strongly associated …
Spatio-temporal cluster detection of chickenpox in Valencia, Spain in the period 2008-2012.
2015
Chickenpox is a highly contagious airborne disease caused by Varicella zoster, which affects nearly all non-immune children worldwide with an annual incidence estimated at 80-90 million cases. To analyze the spatiotemporal pattern of the chickenpox incidence in the city of Valencia, Spain two complementary statistical approaches were used. First, we evaluated the existence of clusters and spatio-temporal interaction; secondly, we used this information to find the locations of the spatio-temporal clusters via the space-time permutation model. The first method used detects any aggregation in our data but does not provide the spatial and temporal information. The second me…
