Cheek-splitting technique for marginal mandibulectomy: A novel approach

When performing marginal mandibulectomy, ensuring complete tumor removal and preventing postoperative iatrogenic mandibular fracture are essential. Pathological fracture can result due to stress concentration at the site requiring acute angle resection. To perform marginal mandibulectomy without making acute angles in patients with a lesion in the molar or more posterior region, a submandibular or transbuccal approach is necessary. Compared to the submandibular approach, the transbuccal approach is considered useful as it reduces operative time and prevents injury to the facial and mental nerves. Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to investigate the root canal system morphology of maxillary first premolars by means of micro–computed tomographic imaging in a Swiss-German population. Methods The root canal configuration (RCC) of 115 maxillary first premolars (Mx1Ps) were investigated by means of micro–computed tomographic imaging and 3-dimensional imaging. The RCC and the physiological foramina results are described by a 4-digit system code. Results Twelve different RCCs were observed in 30 single-rooted Mx1Ps; 2-2-2/2 (30.0%), 1-2-2/2 (13.3%), 1-2-1/2 (10%), and 2-2-1/2 (10.0%) were the most frequent ones. Tricho-dento-osseous syndrome (TDO), an uncommon form of ectodermal dysplasia is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder which is characterized by inherited defects in tissues arising from epithelial-mesenchymal interaction. Genetic studies have revealed that it is caused by mutation in the DLX3 gene. TDO presents with a great phenotypic heterogeneity and studies have suggested that this heterogeneity is the result of environmental factors or other genetic modifiers. Background The main aims of this cohort study were to measure the intrafamilial risk of transmission, sharing and stability of the most virulent S. mutans genotypes. Material and Methods A total of 392 clinical isolates of S. mutans obtained from caries-active adults and genotyped to evaluate their transmissibility over time. After extraction of the chromosomal DNA, PCR were performed to detect the genes involved in the production of GbpA (gbpA) and mutacin types I, II, III and IV (mutAI, mutAII, mutAIII and mutAIV). Cowden’s Syndrome (CS) is a rare congenital autosomal dominant disorder that affects around 1/200000 patients with an incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity, characterized by alterations in a tumor suppressor gene. A 14-year-old Caucasian male patient came to the attention of the authors complaining of palm nodules, gingival bleeding and painful pedunculated lesions on the lips and on the labial side of anterior sextants.
