Judo as a tool for social integration in adolescents at risk of social exclusion: A pilot study

2020

Purpose: Social policies of the advanced countries have begun to incorporate sport to speak on manifestations of social exclusion, as tool to reach out to young people, strengthen their identity or enhance self-esteem vulnerable groups. Judo can be a good tool for the fulfilment of this purpose because has a philosophy and educational practice that contains much of the core competencies of the educational system. The aim of this study is to analyse the incidence of judo practice in changing attitudes, values, norms and capabilities across organizational forms as a means of enhancing socialization in their interventions with young people at risk of social exclusion. Immigrant Detention Centres in Spain: a critical assessment

2012

This paper presents a critical examination of the management of irregular migration flows in Spain and the legal principles and administrative practices implemented by the State in the process of expulsion that legitimise the existence of Immigrant Detention Centres (CIE). It also provides a description of the current situation of the CIE, and reports on the most recent proposals made by the Spanish government to improve the management of CIE in response to pressure exerted by civil society organisations, especially after public protests regarding the death of two inmates in December 2011 and January 2012.

Reflexions on the introduction of the vocabulary of regulation in the field of law during the XVIIIth century and on its contemporary use

2017

According to a recurring lesson, the vocabulary of regulation would be of late introduction in the law language. Indeed, law professors substantiate this theory, conveyed by the sociologists : this word family would have first been introduced by the social sciences at the end of the XIXth century, before any use by the world of law. The present study tends, on the contrary, to demonstrate the existence and the continuity of the idea of regulation in law since the introduction, in the XVIIIth century, of the polysemous figure of the regulator ; a two-headed figure, applied as well to a power as to a judicial institution and to law, which separates and sometimes involves the regulation of a m…

Newspapers and Cross-Level Communications on Social Media : A comparative study of Japan, Korea, and Finland

2017

In order to examine how the same types of social media are perceived and utilized in different national contexts for journalism and news media, we studied mainstream newspapers in three countries where both newspapers and social media are viable: Japan, Korea, and Finland. Our in-depth interviews with journalists indicate both similarities and differences in the three countries. The most outstanding similarity is that newspapers have not fully incorporated cross-level communications available on social media platforms. Factors related to organizational structures, goals, policies, and procedures served as filters for the incorporation of social media into the news production and distributio…

Meaningful life and survival in urban poverty : an ethnographic study on the dimensions of deprivation and anxiety and the coping strategies of a gro…

2014

Tähän etnografiseen tutkimukseen on haastateltu seitsemää pitopalveluosuuskunnan jäsentä Addis Abebassa, Etiopiassa. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan haastateltavien pääasiallisia puutteen ja huolen aiheita, ja heidän henkilökohtaisia selviytymisstrategioitaan urbaanissa köyhyydessä. Kuinka ihmiset määrittelevät ja kokevat erilaiset päivittäiset puutteen ja huolen aiheensa? Mitä voimavaroja haastateltavat voivat käyttää selviytyäkseen urbaanissa köyhyydessä? Olen kytkenyt haastateltavien narratiivit Etiopiassa ja Addis Abebassa parhaillaan käynnissä olevaan yhteiskunnalliseen muutokseen hyödyntäen sekä haastatteluaineistoa että kirjallisuutta liittyen muun muassa urbaanin köyhyyden diskurssin ke…

Disability in Older People and Socio-Economic Deprivation in Italy: Effects on the Care Burden and System Resources

2021

The sustainability of European Long-Term Care systems faces the demographic and socio-economic circumstances, mainly the increasing ageing of the population, with its chronic disease conditions, and the simultaneous economic general crises, exacerbated by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Beyond the increase in general rate of relative poverty, there is a higher risk of poverty among elderly and families in a high demand of care, especially if situations of Activities Daily Living (ADL) disability are present. Italian welfare, which is based on family care regimes and regional strategies, and is oriented to private or public care, is a relevant case study with which to analyze such a relationsh…

El consum recreatiu d'esteroides anabolitzants: una perspectiva sociològica

2013

The present study aims to provide a sociological overview of anabolic steroid use in Valencia (Spain), with particular attention to social factors that promote and sustain the recreational use of this drug. We consider not only the extensively documented health risks, but also the social determinants associated with its use. The lack of studies, both in the European and Valencian contexts, which describe the extension and consumption patterns of anabolic steroids among young people, has inspired us to portray the sociological characteristics of the recreational anabolic steroid user, taking the main conceptual tools of the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu as a central reference point. Following …

Local mechanical properties by Atomic Force Microscopy nanoindentations

2008

The analysis of mechanical properties on a nanometer scale is a useful tool for combining information concerning texture organization obtained by microscopy with the properties of individual components- Moreover, this technique promotes the understanding of the hierarchical arrangement in complex natural materials as well in the case of simpler morphologies arising from industrial processes. Atomic Force Microscopy, AFM, can bridge morphological information, obtained with outstanding resolution, to local mechanical properties. When performing an AFM nanoindentation, the rough force curve, i.e., the plot of the voltage output from the photodiode vs. the voltage applied to the piezo-scanner, …

Database Species-Area Relationships in Palaearctic Grasslands

2012

The Database Species-Area Relationships in Palaearctic Grasslands (GIVD ID EU-00-003) is an initiative of the European Dry Grassland Group (EDGG) and primarily functions as repository for all data sampled during the EDGG Research Expeditions. During these expeditions two types of highly standardised sampling of dry grassland vegetation in the Palaearctic realm are carried out: (i) nested-plot sampling on squares of 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 m2; (ii) additional normal releves of 10-m2 plots. For all plot sizes, the terricolous vascular plants, bryophytes, and lichens are recorded that are superficially present (shoot presence). Additionally, for all 10-m2 plots species cover i…
