The trees in the middle of Paradise (Gn 2:9) during the Great Lent: Orthodox hymnography as biblical interpretation

2022

The article examines the interpretation of the Scripture in Byzantine hymnography during the Great Lent. Some notable recent contributions focus on Andrew of Crete’s and Romanos the Melodist’s compositions, illustrating the hymnographic way of understanding the Scriptures. The author of this study presents a selection of stanzas from hymns of the Triodion that refer to the trees of Paradise. Hymnography perceives the trees in Genesis 2–3 in direct connection with the cross. Only rarely is the tree of life a metaphor for Jesus, as the shadow of the tree of the cross is seldom a metaphor for protection. Another interesting aspect in relation to hymnography is the fact that it represents a typ…

Obesity and Mental Health: A Longitudinal, Cross-Cultural Examination in Germany and China

2021

The present study examines the relationship between obesity and mental health using longitudinal data. Participants with data at baseline and one-year follow-up were included from two countries: Germany (364) and China (9007). A series of structural equation models with three mediators and one moderator were conducted separately for female and male students in Germany and China. Zero-order correlations indicated that overweight/obesity was significantly related to later depression and anxiety in Chinese males. Additional effects of obesity on later mental health flowed through effects on attractiveness (Chinese and German females, and Chinese males), physical health (Chinese males), and lif…

A Comparison of Depression and Anxiety among University Students in Nine Countries during the COVID-19 Pandemic

2021

The mental health of young adults, particularly students, is at high risk during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in mental health between university students in nine countries during the pandemic. The study encompassed 2349 university students (69% female) from Colombia, the Czech Republic (Czechia), Germany, Israel, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Turkey, and Ukraine. Participants underwent the following tests: Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), Exposure to COVID-19 (EC-19), Perceived Impact of Coronavirus (PIC) on students’ well-being, Physical Activity (PA), and General Self-Reported Health (GSRH). The one-way…

Measurements of inclusive jet spectra in pp and central Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV

2020

This article reports measurements of the pT-differential inclusive jet cross section in pp collisions at √s = 5.02 TeV and the pT-differential inclusive jet yield in Pb-Pb 0-10% central collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV. Jets were reconstructed at midrapidity with the ALICE tracking detectors and electromagnetic calorimeter using the anti-kT algorithm. For pp collisions, we report jet cross sections for jet resolution parameters R=0.1-0.6 over the range 20<pT,jet<140 GeV/c, as well as the jet cross-section ratios of different R and comparisons to two next-to-leading-order (NLO)-based theoretical predictions. For Pb-Pb collisions, we report the R=0.2 and R=0.4 jet spectra for 40<pT,jet<140 GeV/c…

Growing Like Germany: Local Public Debt, Local Banks, Low Private Investment

2021

The paper uses a panel of more than 1m German firms over 2010-2016, to provide the first firm-bank level evidence of local crowding out for a developed economy characterized by low interest rates and fiscal austerity. Our mechanism relies on two structural features of Germany's banking landscape: the local segmentation of credit markets for small and medium-sized firms (SME) and the role of local public banks in local public finance. Local public banks dominate lending to small and medium firms in Germany and also have an explicit mandate to lend to the local public sector. With spreads on local government debt at all-time lows, local public banks tried to break even, using their market pow…

6-Amino-2-iminiumyl-4-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidin-5-aminium sulfate monohydrate

2019

The title compound, C4H9N5O2+·SO4 2−·H2O, is the monohydrate of the commercially available compound `C4H7N5O·H2SO4·xH2O'. It is obtained by reprecipitation of C4H7N5O·H2SO4·xH2O from dilute sodium hydroxide solution with dilute sulfuric acid. The crystal structure of anhydrous 2,4,5-triamino-1,6-dihydropyrimidin-6-one sulfate is known, although called by the authors 5-amminium-6-amino-isocytosinium sulfate [Bieri et al. (1993). Private communication (refcode HACDEU). CCDC, Cambridge, England]. In the structure, the sulfate group is deprotonated, whereas one of the amino groups is protonated (R 2C—NH3 +) and one is rearranged to a protonated imine group (R 2C=NH2 +). This arrangement is very…

4,4′-(1,2-Diazaniumylethane-1,2-diyl)dibenzoate trihydrate

2016

The title compound, C16H16N2O4·3H2O, was synthesized from (1R,2R)-1,2-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethylenediamine and terephthalaldehydic acid. The compound crystallizes from water as a double zwitterion with protonated amine groups and deprotonated carboxylate groups. The dihedral angle formed by the aromatic rings is 3.86 (11)°. In the crystal, N—H...O and O—H...O hydrogen bonds link molecules into a three-dimensional network.

N-(6-Methylpyridin-2-yl)mesitylenesulfonamide and acetic acid--a salt, a cocrystal or both?

2015

In the solid obtained fromN-(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)mesitylenesulfonamide and acetic acid, the constituents interactviatwo N—H...O hydrogen bonds. The H atom situated in one of these short contacts is disordered over two positions: one of these positions is formally associated with an adduct of the neutral sulfonamide molecule and the neutral acetic acid molecule, and corresponds to a cocrystal, while the alternative site is associated with salt formation between a protonated sulfonamide molecule and deprotonated acetic acid molecule. Site-occupancy refinements and electron densities from difference Fourier maps suggest a trend with temperature, albeit of limited significance; the cocrystal i…
