Underdiagnosis and undertreatment of osteoporotic patients admitted in internal medicine wards in Italy between 2010 and 2016 (the REPOSI Register)

2021

Purpose: To evaluate clinical features, treatments, and outcomes of osteoporotic patients admitted to internal medicine and geriatric wards compared with non-osteoporotic patients (REPOSI registry). Methods: We studied 4714 patients hospitalized between 2010 and 2016. We reported age, sex, educational level, living status, comorbidities and drugs taken, Cumulative Illness Rating Scale (CIRS), Barthel Index, Short-Blessed Test, 4-item Geriatric Depression Scale, serum hemoglobin, creatinine, and clinical outcomes. Osteoporosis was defined based on the diagnoses recorded at admission, according to the following ICD9: 733, 805-813, 820-823. Results: Twelve percent of the patients had a preadmi…

Can Ketogenic Diet Improve Alzheimer's Disease? Association With Anxiety, Depression, and Glutamate System

2021

Background: Alzheimer's disease is the most common neurodegenerative disorder in our society, mainly characterized by loss of cognitive function. However, other symptoms such as anxiety and depression have been described in patients. The process is mediated by alterations in the synaptic and extrasynaptic activity of the neurotransmitter glutamate, which are linked to a hypometabolism of glucose as the main source of brain energy. In that respect, Ketogenic diet (KD) has been proposed as a non-pharmacological treatment serving as an alternative energy source to the neurons increasing the fat percentage and reducing the carbohydrates percentage, showing promising results to improve the cogni…

Emotional Distress Following Childbirth: An Intervention to Buffer Depressive and PTSD Symptoms.

2015

Childbirth for some women is a negative experience associated with depressive and post-traumatic symptoms. The preventive actions focusing on helping mothers to cope with negative emotions experienced after childbirth are strongly recommended. It is also recommended both to intervene early and on all women to avoid the risk that these symptoms can worsen in the months after childbirth. The intervention described in the current study is focalized on the elaboration of post-partum negative thoughts and emotion through a writing task, with the purpose to help new mothers to reflect, understand, evaluate and, thus, reformulate the stressful situation with new beliefs and emotions. 176 women age…

Experience in a Military Trauma Surgery Department with External Skeletal Fixation of Femur Fractures

1989

Our experience with external skeletal fixation of complex open and closed femoral fractures in 50 conventional trauma victims is presented. Different external fixator systems were primarily used in 26 patients and secondarily in 24 patients. The authors feel that early definitive femoral fracture care in civilian and military trauma victims employing unilateral external monofixation, which avoids casts, and allows improved wound management and early mobilization of the multitrauma patient, has decreased the complication rate commonly associated with internal fixation of open femoral fractures.

Depression, emotional blunting, and akinesia in schizophrenia

2002

Depression, negative symptoms, and extrapyramidal signs (EPS) frequently occur together in schizophrenia. Their overlap is due partly to the lack of specificity of assessment instruments. However, to disentangle the three syndromes is clinically important as treatment of schizophrenia requires a differentiated approach. This study investigated the overlap between depression, emotional blunting as a core part of the negative syndrome, and akinesia as manifestation of EPS, using the Calgary Depression Rating Scale (CDSS), the Rating Scale for Emotional Blunting (SEB), and the akinesia score of the Simpson-Angus Scale (SAS) as the most specific assessment instruments presently available. We in…

Epidemiology and social costs of hip fracture.

2018

Hip fracture is an important and debilitating condition in older people, particularly in women. The epidemiological data varies between countries, but it is globally estimated that hip fractures will affect around 18% of women and 6% of men. Although the age-standardised incidence is gradually falling in many countries, this is far outweighed by the ageing of the population. Thus, the global number of hip fractures is expected to increase from 1.26 million in 1990 to 4.5 million by the year 2050. The direct costs associated with this condition are enormous since it requires a long period of hospitalisation and subsequent rehabilitation. Furthermore, hip fracture is associated with the devel…
