Detailed Anatomical and Electrophysiological Models of Human Atria and Torso for the Simulation of Atrial Activation

2015

Atrial arrhythmias, and specifically atrial fibrillation (AF), induce rapid and irregular activation patterns that appear on the torso surface as abnormal P-waves in electrocardiograms and body surface potential maps (BSPM). In recent years both P-waves and the BSPM have been used to identify the mechanisms underlying AF, such as localizing ectopic foci or high-frequency rotors. However, the relationship between the activation of the different areas of the atria and the characteristics of the BSPM and P-wave signals are still far from being completely understood. In this work we developed a multi-scale framework, which combines a highly-detailed 3D atrial model and a torso model to study th…

Introduction of histidine residues into avidin subunit interfaces allows pH-dependent regulation of quaternary structure and biotin binding

2003

AbstractIn order to turn the subunit association and biotin binding of avidin into pH-sensitive phenomena, we have replaced individually three amino acid residues in avidin (Met96, Val115 and Ile117) with histidines in the 1–3 interface, and in combination with a histidine conversion in the 1–2 interface (Trp110). The single replacements Met96His and Val115His in the 1–3 interface were found to have a clear effect on the quaternary structure of avidin, since subunit associations of these mutants became pH-dependent. The histidine replacement in the 1–2 interface affected the biotin-binding properties of the mutants, in particular reversibility of binding and protein–ligand complex formation…

Structural and magnetic characterization of a 1D chain of [Co(II)2(mu-aqua)(mu-carboxylate)2] strung cores.

2009

A novel 1D chain built up from stringing of [Co2(μ-OH 2)(μ-O2CC(CH3)3)2] units with the bridging 2,2′-bipyrimidine ligand has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The chains are well isolated from each other by the bulky tert-butyl groups of the carboxlyates and show an alternating zigzag configuration for the Co(II) metallic centres. DC magnetic measurements show anti-ferromagnetic coupling, Jca.-3 cm-1 between adjacent Co(II) ions along the chain. Noticeably, good data fitting was obtained by means of simple models that neglect any kind of first order orbital contribution to the spin ground state, which is normally observed in Co(II) complexes. These results were further confi…

Apparent molar volumes of 1-pentanol in water fromT=298 K toT=413 K atp=0.1 MPa andp=19 MPa

1996

Abstract Densities of 1-pentanol aqueous solutions were measured by using a vibrating tube densimeter especially designed and equipped to perform accurate measurements from ambient conditions up toT=423 K andp=80 MPa. The densimeter was tested by measuring densities of NaCl (aq). A comparison with the most reliable literature data showed very good agreement with differences lower than (0.03 and 0.1) kg·m−3for molalities below and above 0.5 mol·kg−1, respectively. From the density measurements, the apparent molar volumes of 1-pentanol in water,Vφwere determined as a function of molalitymat temperatures fromT=298 K toT=413 K atp=0.1 MPa andp=19 MPa. At a given temperature and pressure, and pa…

Emissions and spatial variability of N2O, N2 and nitrous oxide mole fraction at the field scale, revealed with 15N isotopic techniques.

2006

Abstract The accurate measurement of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and dinitrogen (N 2 ) during the denitrification process in soils is a challenge which will help to estimate the contribution of soil N 2 O emissions to global warming. Oxygen concentration, nitrate concentration and carbon availability are generally the main factors that control soil denitrification rate and the amount of N 2 O or N 2 emitted. The aim of this paper is to present a database of the N 2 O mole fraction measured at the field scale, and to test hypotheses concerning its regulation. A 15 N-nitrate tracer solution was added to 36 undisturbed soil cores on a 20 m×20 m cultivated field plot. Fluxes of CO 2 , N 2 O and N 2 f…

ITINERARIOS INSTITUCIONALIZADOS: RESPONSABILIDADES Y DINÁMICAS DE EXCLUSIÓN EN LA PROTECCIÓN DE LOS MENORES MIGRANTES NO ACOMPAÑADOS EN GALICIA

2013

This paper aims at revealing the partial results of the research I have been conducting since 2010 with the community of unaccompanied children and youngsters hosted by the protection system of the Autonomous Community of Galicia (Spain). The research focuses on a case study, including adolescents from a specific territory of Morocco, the province of Beni Mellal, one of the most relevant out-bound migration regions into Spain and Italy. The study points out some gaps in the implementation of the rights of the child that blocks the access to protection, conditioning his/her vital trajectory and social integration after youngster's departure from the hosting institution.

Indicadores compuestos como metodología innovadora en Comunicación. Aplicación para la evaluación de los medios públicos europeos

2020

The currently dominant scientific production model in the field of Communication exhibits an excess of standardization towards mainly empirical work that is overwhelming caried out using quantitative techniques based on simple statistical analyses, in many cases limiting the presentation of results to a reading of the available data. This article presents an innovative proposal in this area, designed as a new form of dissemination and scientific presentation, with the objective of constructing three composite indicators that, when applied to European public service media, will enable the assessment of the perception of their social value, independence, and management efficiency. Another aim…

The Multiscale Stochastic Model of Fractional Hereditary Materials (FHM)

2013

Abstract In a recent paper the authors proposed a mechanical model corresponding, exactly, to fractional hereditary materials (FHM). Fractional derivation index 13 E [0,1/2] corresponds to a mechanical model composed by a column of massless newtonian fluid resting on a bed of independent linear springs. Fractional derivation index 13 E [1/2, 1], corresponds, instead, to a mechanical model constituted by massless, shear-type elastic column resting on a bed of linear independent dashpots. The real-order of derivation is related to the exponent of the power-law decay of mechanical characteristics. In this paper the authors aim to introduce a multiscale fractance description of FHM in presence …

On the interplay between multiscaling and stocks dependence

2019

We find a nonlinear dependence between an indicator of the degree of multiscaling of log-price time series of a stock and the average correlation of the stock with respect to the other stocks traded in the same market. This result is a robust stylized fact holding for different financial markets. We investigate this result conditional on the stocks' capitalization and on the kurtosis of stocks' log-returns in order to search for possible confounding effects. We show that a linear dependence with the logarithm of the capitalization and the logarithm of kurtosis does not explain the observed stylized fact, which we interpret as being originated from a deeper relationship.

On the use of adaptive spatial weight matrices from disease mapping multivariate analyses

2020

Conditional autoregressive distributions are commonly used to model spatial dependence between nearby geographic units in disease mapping studies. These distributions induce spatial dependence by means of a spatial weights matrix that quantifies the strength of dependence between any two neighboring spatial units. The most common procedure for defining that spatial weights matrix is using an adjacency criterion. In that case, all pairs of spatial units with adjacent borders are given the same weight (typically 1) and the remaining non-adjacent units are assigned a weight of 0. However, assuming all spatial neighbors in a model to be equally influential could be possibly a too rigid or inapp…
