Increased dynamic effects in a catalytically compromised variant of Escherichia coli dihydrofolate reductase

2013

Isotopic substitution (15N, 13C, 2H) of a catalytically compromised variant of Escherichia coli dihydrofolate reductase, EcDHFR-N23PP/S148A, has been used to investigate the effect of these mutations on catalysis. The reduction of the rate constant of the chemical step in the EcDHFR-N23PP/S148A catalyzed reaction is essentially a consequence of an increase of the quasi-classical free energy barrier and to a minor extent of an increased number of recrossing trajectories on the transition state dividing surface. Since the variant enzyme is less well set up to catalyze the reaction, a higher degree of active site reorganization is needed to reach the TS. Although millisecond active site motion…

Interdependence Between Tool Fracture and Wear

1985

Wear and fracture are the main causes of tool scrapping. However fracture plays a major role for increasing values of the hardness and brittleness of tool materials or when low-cobalt tungsten carbides are used or in interrupted cutting conditions where it is the most relevant factor for tool scrapping. In order to obtain the optimal values of the cutting speed both these factors should be considered. The hypothesis of stochastic independence among them simplifies the mathematical formulation of the optimization problem; but experimental investigations do not agree with this assumption and, as a matter of fact, the probability density function of tool fracture results to be dependent on the…

Bridging Strategic Project Planning with Tactical Planning in the Design Process

2020

The paper studies the issue of bridging strategic planning with tactical/operative planning in the design process of complex AEC-projects. The paper present user-friendly planning methods on a tactical level which gives the planner intuitive control over dependent, independent, and interdependent tasks during the design process. In our understanding the planning process starts at the strategic level using integrated milestones as a prerequisite for handling progress and strategic coordination in projects. Moving forward in the planning process towards the operative level, the process requires flexible and agile methods which ensures robustness in the various plans that must be made. In this…

Graphical Models for Dependencies and Associations

1992

The role of graphical representations is described in distinguishing various special forms of independency structure that can arise with multivariate data, especially in observational studies in the social sciences. Conventions for constructing the graphs and strategies for analysing three sets of data are summarized. Finally some directions for desirable future work are outlined.

Explaining the Formation Rates of Post-Communist Interest Organizations: Density Dependence and Political Opportunity Structure

2020

This article presents an analysis of the formation of organized interest groups in the post-communist context and organizational populations over time. We test two theories that shed doubt on whether vital rates of interest groups are explained by individual incentives, namely, the political opportunity structure and population ecology theory. Based on an analysis of the energy policy and higher education policy organizations active at the national level in Hungary, Poland, and Slovenia, we find that while the period of democratic and economic transition indeed opened up the opportunity structure for organizational formations, it by no means presented a clean slate. Communist-era successor…

Recent Changes in Student Life and Study ProcessesABSTRACT

1995

This research on university and university students was carried out during the 1980s at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland. It is argued that the student years no longer constitute a ‘classically’ academic life stage; instead, the modem student's life is divided between study and part‐time employment. The uncertain economic situation and social immaturity of today's students hampers their identity formation. Student culture has lost its independence and vitality, and the basic structures of students’ life‐world have fragmented so that their lives no longer revolve around the university. Moreover, curricularization in universities has instrumentalized the study process and the relation o…

SUBOXONE EFFICACY IN TREATING DRUG ADDICTION: COMPARISON WITH METHADONE AND MONITORING OF PATIENTS IN THERAPY AT SERT OF MARSALA

2017

Drug dependence and abuse is a public health problem as revealed by reports of state police that account overdoserelated deaths for 305 during 2015. Most of the dead were caused by heroin. Despite evidence that methadone maintenance treatment is effective, it remains a controversial therapy because of its indefinite provision of a dependence-producing medication. The aim of this work is to evaluate clinically the effectiveness of Suboxone in maintaining abstinence and preventing relapse. Suboxone consists of buprenorphine and naloxone in the 4:1 ratio. The former is a partial agonist on the receptor and its absorption is rapid, while Naloxone is an antagonist on the receptor k and it is abs…

Depinning frequency in a heavily neutron-irradiated MgB2 sample

2008

The magnetic-field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance have been investigated in a heavily neutron-irradiated MgB2 sample, in which the irradiation has caused the merging of the two gaps into a single value. The experimental results have been analyzed in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model. By fitting the experimental data, we have determined the field dependence of the depinning frequency, omega_0, at different values of the temperature. Although the pinning is not particularly effective, the value of omega_0 obtained at low temperatures is considerably higher than that observed in conventional low-temperature superconductors.
