Functional outcome in bipolar disorder: the role of clinical and cognitive factors.

2007

Introduction:  Few studies have examined the clinical, neuropsychological and pharmacological factors involved in the functional outcome of bipolar disorder despite the gap between clinical and functional recovery. Methods:  A sample of 77 euthymic bipolar patients were included in the study. Using an a priori definition of low versus good functional outcome, based on the psychosocial items of the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF, DSM-IV), and taking also into account their occupational adaptation, the patients were divided into two groups: good or low occupational functioning. Patients with high (n = 46) and low (n = 31) functioning were compared on several clinical, neuropsychologica…

Aging Affects the Mental Rotation of Left and Right Hands

2009

BACKGROUND:Normal aging significantly influences motor and cognitive performance. Little is known about age-related changes in action simulation. Here, we investigated the influence of aging on implicit motor imagery. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:Twenty young (mean age: 23.9+/-2.8 years) and nineteen elderly (mean age: 78.3+/-4.5 years) subjects, all right-handed, were required to determine the laterality of hands presented in various positions. To do so, they mentally rotated their hands to match them with the hand-stimuli. We showed that: (1) elderly subjects were affected in their ability to implicitly simulate movements of the upper limbs, especially those requiring the largest amplit…

The analysis of the material deprivation of foreigners in Italy.

2013

We examine the material deprivation of foreigners on a sub-sample of the 2009 Italian Survey on Income and Living Conditions. We employ two indices of material deprivation that take into account the regional level of our analysis, and rely on the assignment of weights to items. The determinants of material deprivation are investigated through a zero-inflated beta model.

Effects of differential relevance of external stimuli on heart rate under food deprivation

1972

Ss were deprived of food for 24 h, after which heart rate (HR) was recorded with food placed before the Ss and also after they had eaten it. It was predicted, according to Malmo’s interaction hypothesis, that HR in both situations would be higher than at a control level but that the increase after food ingestion would be greater than that found in the presence of visual cues. The results did not wholly support these predictions. Only after eating were significant HR increases found. Possible reasons for the discrepancies between findings in this area were discussed.

Eyes open and eyes closed as rest conditions: impact on brain activation patterns

2003

The patterns of associated brain activations during eyes-open and eyes-closed states in complete darkness considerably differ in fMRI. An "interoceptive" state with the eyes closed is characterized by visual cortex activation, while an "exteroceptive" state with the eyes open is characterized by ocular motor system activity. The impact of the chosen rest condition (eyes open or eyes closed in complete darkness) on the pattern of brain activations during visual stimulation was evaluated in 14 healthy volunteers. During fixation or dim light room illumination, the activation of the visual cortex was larger with the eyes-open rest condition than with the eyes-closed rest condition; however, ac…

Dark exposure affects plasticity-related molecules and interneurons throughout the visual system during adulthood

2020

Several experimental manipulations, including visual deprivation, are able to induce critical period-like plasticity in the visual cortex of adult animals. In this regard, many studies have analyzed the effects of dark exposure in adult animals, but still little is known about the role of interneurons and plasticity-related molecules on such mechanisms. In this study, we analyzed the effects of 10 days of dark exposure on the connectivity and structure of interneurons, both in the primary visual cortex and in the rest of cerebral regions implicated in the transmission of visual stimulus. We found that this environmental manipulation induces changes in the expression of synaptic molecules th…

Social deprivation and 1‐year survival after stroke: a prospective cohort study

2020

BACKGROUND Social deprivation may have a deleterious influence on post-stroke outcomes, but available data in the literature are mixed. AIM The aim of this cohort study was to evaluate the impact of social deprivation on 1-year survival in patients with first-ever stroke. METHODS Social deprivation was assessed at individual level with the EPICES score, a validated multidimensional questionnaire, in 1312 patients with ischemic stroke and 228 patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage, who were prospectively enrolled in six French study centers. Baseline characteristics including stroke severity and pre-stroke functional status were collected. Multivariable Cox models were generated …

Impact of sociodemographic characteristics on cognitive performance in an elderly Sicilian population.

2002

Objective: To assess cognitive levels in an elderly Sicilian population and to evaluate the role of education and other sociodemographic characteristics in cognitive performance. Background: The pattern of cognitive performance in the elderly has not been investigated extensively in well-defined Italian populations. This study was conducted as part of a door-to-door survey of common neurologic disorders (the Sicilian Neuro-Epidemiologic Study project). Methods: Thirteen physicians administered an Italian version of the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ) to all subjects aged 50 years or older who, on November 1, 1987, r…

Neurofunctional correlates of attention rehabilitation in Parkinson's disease: an explorative study

2014

The effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation (CR) in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is in its relative infancy, and nowadays there is insufficient information to support evidence-based clinical protocols. This study is aimed at testing a validated therapeutic strategy characterized by intensive computer-based attention-training program tailored to attention deficits. We further investigated the presence of synaptic plasticity by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Using a randomized controlled study, we enrolled eight PD patients who underwent a CR program (Experimental group) and seven clinically/demographically-matched PD patients who underwent a placebo intervention (Contro…

Meaningful life and survival in urban poverty : an ethnographic study on the dimensions of deprivation and anxiety and the coping strategies of a gro…

2014

Tähän etnografiseen tutkimukseen on haastateltu seitsemää pitopalveluosuuskunnan jäsentä Addis Abebassa, Etiopiassa. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan haastateltavien pääasiallisia puutteen ja huolen aiheita, ja heidän henkilökohtaisia selviytymisstrategioitaan urbaanissa köyhyydessä. Kuinka ihmiset määrittelevät ja kokevat erilaiset päivittäiset puutteen ja huolen aiheensa? Mitä voimavaroja haastateltavat voivat käyttää selviytyäkseen urbaanissa köyhyydessä? Olen kytkenyt haastateltavien narratiivit Etiopiassa ja Addis Abebassa parhaillaan käynnissä olevaan yhteiskunnalliseen muutokseen hyödyntäen sekä haastatteluaineistoa että kirjallisuutta liittyen muun muassa urbaanin köyhyyden diskurssin ke…
