Design and characterization of a new high-dose-rate brachytherapy Valencia applicator for larger skin lesions
2016
Purpose: The aims of this study were (i) to design a new high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy applicator for treating surface lesions with planning target volumes larger than 3 cm in diameter and up to 5 cm in size, using the microSelectron-HDR or Flexitron afterloader (Elekta Brachytherapy) with a 192Ir source; (ii) to calculate by means of the Monte Carlo(MC) method the dose distribution for the new applicator when it is placed against a water phantom; and (iii) to validate experimentally the dose distributions in water. Methods: The penelope2008MC code was used to optimize dwell positions and dwell times. Next, the dose distribution in a water phantom and the leakage dose distribution arou…
A depth dependent analytical approach to determine material breaking in SPIF
2007
Formability is a relevant issue in Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF) process since it is one of the main point of strength together to the possibility to avoid any dedicated die. Several researches agree that, depending on working material and process parameters, in SPIF operations there is a threshold slope of the wall that cannot be overcame without material breaking. If deep Incremental Forming is taken into account, despite the previous statement it is possible to demonstrate that, when the threshold angle is imposed, there is a relation between the actual workpiece depth and the material breaking approaching. In this paper, the latter relationship was investigated and formally de…
Dependence of the Optical Constant Parameters of p-Toluene Sulfonic Acid-Doped Polyaniline and Its Composites on Dispersion Solvents
2020
The optical constants of Para-Toluene sulfonic acid-doped polyaniline (PANI), PANIchitosan composites, PANI-reduced graphene-oxide composites and a ternary composite comprising of PANI, chitosan and reduced graphene-oxide dispersed in diluted p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) solution and N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP) solvent have been evaluated and compared. The optical constant values were extracted from the absorbance spectra of thin layers of the respective samples. The potential utilization of the materials as the active sensing materials of surface plasmon resonance biosensors has also been assessed in terms of the estimated value of the penetration depth through a dielectric medium. The …
Considerations on Dop (Depth Of Penetration) Test for Evaluation of Ceramics Materials Used in Ballistic Protection
2017
AbstractTremendous amount of funds and other resorces were invested in studying the response of ceramic materials under ballistic impact, the main goal being to find a way to increase the protection of soldiers and the vehicles used in the modern battlespace. Using of ceramic materials especially carbon based (carbides), nitrogen based (nitrides) and oxygen based (oxides) ceramics in order to increase the protection level of ballistic equipment could be, sometimes, a big challenge when trying to use the proper test in order to evaluate and compare their performances. The role of the tests is to provide a better understanding of their response in different situations and, as a consequence, t…
Explicit equations for uniform flow depth
2017
Conventional approach in uniform open channel flow is to express the resistance coefficient in the Manning, Darcy-Weisbach or Chezy form. However, for practical cross-sections, including rectangular and trapezoidal ones, the governing equation is implicit in the uniform water depth. For these sections the water depth, corresponding to known values of the flow discharge, slope channel and resistance coefficient, is presently obtained by trial and error procedure. In this paper exact analytical solutions of uniform flow depth for rectangular and trapezoidal section have been obtained in the form of fast converging power series.
Multipass machining optimization by using fuzzy possibilistic programming and genetic algorithms
1999
The paper deals with optimal determination of the cutting parameters in multipass machining operations. A new optimization approach is proposed which uses a possibilistic formulation of the classical optimization problem and optimizes the resulting possibilistic model using a genetic algorithm. The proposed approach makes it possible to find the optimal value of all the cutting parameters, including the depth of cut, in just one step. A numerical example is provided to compare the performance of the proposed method with other recent methods proposed in the literature. Furthermore, fuzzy data must be used in the formulation of the optimization problem and therefore a fuzzy possibilistic app…
Fuzzified Game Tree Search – Precision vs Speed
2012
Most game tree search algorithms consider finding the optimal move. That is, given an evaluation function they guarantee that selected move will be the best according to it. However, in practice most evaluation functions are themselves approximations and cannot be considered "optimal". Besides, we might be satisfied with nearly optimal solution if it gives us a considerable performance improvement. In this paper we present the approximation based implementations of the fuzzified game tree search algorithm. The paradigm of the algorithm allows us to efficiently find nearly optimal solutions so we can choose the "target quality" of the search with arbitrary precision --- either it is 100% (pr…

Violence against women in heterosexual couples: A review of psychological and medico-legal considerations.
2021
Intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) is the most pervasive violation of women’s rights worldwide, causing devastating lifelong damage. Victims can suffer physical, emotional or mental health problems, and experience detrimental effects in social, psychological and relational health with their families, especially children. Due to the complexity regarding violence against women in heterosexual couples, it is important to make a clear distinction between psychological and physical mistreatment, which also includes psychological violence. This differentiation is important in determining different emotional and psychological aspects of mistreatment in order to understand the reasons …
First evaluation of the simultaneous SMOS and ELBARA-II observations in the Mediterranean region
2012
Abstract The SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission was launched on November 2, 2009. Over the land surfaces, simultaneous retrievals of surface soil moisture (SM) and vegetation characteristics made from the multi-angular and dual polarization SMOS observations are now available from Level-2 (L2) products delivered by the European Space Agency (ESA). Therefore, first analyses evaluating the SMOS observations in terms of Brightness Temperatures (TB) and L2 products (SM and vegetation optical depth TAU) can be carried out over several calibration/validation (cal/val) sites selected by ESA over all continents. This study is based on SMOS observations and in situ measurements carried …
