Diagnosis of perioperative myocardial necrosis following coronary artery surgery — a reappraisal of isoenzyme analysis
1990
Although the routine determination of CK-MB activity is widely used after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), the diagnosis of a perioperative myocardial necrosis remains arbitrary. The intention of the present study was to develop discriminative enzymatic parameters of CK-MB activity in a collective of 710 patients following CABG. Patients were grouped according to their postoperative electrocardiogram (ECG). For each patient, the time activity curve of CK-MB was determined. The total amount of CK-MB was calculated by integrating the area beneath the CK-MB activity curve. Patients presenting with an unchanged postoperative ECG (group I) or a new bundle branch block with uncompromised h…
CSF shunt infections in children
1993
The incidence of shunt infections and possible risk factors was investigated by chart analysis. From 1986 to 1989 350 shunt procedures were performed including 273 ventriculoperitoneal shunts and 75 ventriculoatrial shunts. Twenty-eight infectious episodes (8%) occurred in 25 patients during a median follow-up time of 20 months. For 204 patients the follow-up time could be prolonged until September 1992. In these patients no infectious episodes occurred in the extended observation period. In 24 cases (85.7%) a causative organism could be isolated. The infecting organisms were gram-positive cocci in 22 cases (78.6%) and gram-negative bacilli in two cases. The main signs and symptoms were fev…
Antibiotic single-dose prophylaxis of shunt infections.
1989
Shunt infections after implantation or revision of a shunt for CSF drainage in hydrocephalic patients are serious complications. In view of their frequency, this study investigated the efficacy of prophylactic administration of a single dose of the antibiotic cefazedone in reducing in the post-operative infection rate. Fifty children of up to 14 years of age suffering from hydrocephalus of various etiologies were treated prophylactically and compared with a similar untreated group. The diagnosis of infection was based mainly on microbiological and clinical observations and investigations. Classical infection parameters were also recorded and evaluated, but played only a secondary role in es…
Lp(a) levels in patients undergoing aorto-coronary bypass surgery.
1992
The aims of this study were to evaluate plasma lipid, apoprotein and Lp(a) levels in patients with severe coronary atherosclerosis undergoing aorto-coronary bypass surgery (BP) and to relate these parameters to the involvement of one or more vessels. Seventy-seven male patients and 77 cardiovascular disease-free controls, matched for sex, age and body weight were studied. Higher triglyceride and apo B levels with lower HDL-cholesterol and apo A-I levels were found in BP patients in comparison with the controls. Lp(a) levels were slightly, but not significantly, increased. Moreover BP patients presented a significantly higher prevalence of HDL-cholesterol levels below 35 mg dl-1 (49.3% vs 22…
Effects of captopril on myocardial protection during cardioplegia
1993
Abstract The study aimed at checking effects exerted by captopril (C) on human myocardial ACE system as well as the role played by tissue ACE inhibition in reducing reperfusion damage. A human experimental model was used during cardioplegia due to aorto-coronary-by-pass (CABG). Fifty-four patients with coronary artery disease affecting 3 vessels having suffered from acute myocardial infarction anterior (AMI-ant), homogeneous as far as ejection fraction (35–55%), number of grafts (3), clamping time, age and sex, were randomised in a double blind experiment, and were given captopril or placebo (P). A total of 4 mg/l Captopril was mixed into the cardioplegic solution with blood according to th…
Femoropopliteal prosthetic bypass with glutaraldehyde stabilized human umbilical vein (HUV).
2007
Objective Femoropopliteal bypass still is the standard surgical therapy for disabling claudication and critical ischemia. When autologous vein is not suitable synthetic or biological prostheses may be considered. Second generation glutaraldehyde tanned human umbilical vein (HUV) graft was chosen for above and below knee femoropopliteal bypass when autologous vein was not available. A single center experience regarding long-term graft function, secondary reinterventions, and potential biodegeneration of the HUV is presented. Methods Between January 1994 and January 2005, 211 consecutive femoropopliteal bypass operations with HUV (65 above knee and 146 below knee) were performed in 197 patien…
Ten-year outcome after coronary angioplasty in patients with single-vessel coronary artery disease and comparison with the results of the Coronary Ar…
2000
The 10-year results of randomized trials comparing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) in patients with single-vessel coronary artery disease (CAD) with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and medical treatment are not available yet. The aim of this evaluation was to compare our 10-year follow-up results after PTCA in patients with single-vessel CAD with the 10-year follow-up results after CABG and medical treatment in the Coronary Artery Surgery Study (CASS) trial. We evaluated the clinical outcome of 509 patients with single-vessel CAD 10 years after coronary angioplasty. The data were compared with the results of 214 patients with single-vessel CAD after CABG or medi…
MUTUAL INDUCTANCE FOR AN EXPLICITLY FINITE NUMBER OF TURNS
2011
Non coaxial mutual inductance calculations, based on a Bessel function formulation, are presented for coils modelled by an explicitly flnite number of circular turns. The mutual inductance of two such turns can be expressed as an integral of a product of three Bessel functions and an exponential factor, and it is shown that the exponential factors can be analytically summed as a simple geometric progression, or other related sums. This allows the mutual inductance of two thin solenoids to be expressed as an integral of a single analytical expression. Sample numerical results are given for some representative cases and the approach to the limit where the turns are considered to be smeared ou…

Zur Frage der Beziehungen zwischen enddiastolischem Ventrikeldruck unddp/dt bzw.d 2 p/dt 2 der Ventrikeldruckkurve des Herzens
1969
Correlations between left ventricular enddiastolic pressure of the heart and first and second derivation of left ventricular pressure curve (dp/dt, d2p/dt2 respectively) were examined at various hemodynamic conditions. The results showed only a particular dependence ofdp/dt andd2p/dt2 from enddiastolic pressure. Therefore, it is concluded, that enddiastolic pressure is not the most important factor, which influences the dynamics of ventricular contraction.
