Survival of immediately versus delayed loaded short implants: a prospective case series study
2015
Background: To assess and compare survival rates of immediately and delayed loaded short implants (7 mm) in free ends of a partially edentulous jaw with moderate-severe alveolar bone resorption. Material and Methods: 24 patients with atrophic edentulous free-ends were included in this prospective study. Four study groups were monitored monthly and their behavior was evaluated: bridges supported only by short implants and mixed short and long implant bridge groups, both with immediate and delayed loading. Failures, bone loss, probing depth and bleeding on probing were evaluated. Results: 54 Mk III Shorty TiU and 15 Brånemark System®MK III TiU implants with a length longer than 7mm were inclu…
Shock-wave therapy for tennis and golfer's elbow - 1 year follow-up
1999
Thirty patients with chronic medial epicondylitis were treated with low-energy shock waves. They received 500 impulses of 0.08 mJ/mm2 three times at weekly intervals. At 1 year follow-up examinations were performed. According to the Verhaar criteria, only seven patients reached excellent or good results. In eight cases a fair outcome was recorded, and in 14 patients the outcome was poor. Only six patients were satisfied with the treatment. The average relief of pain was 32%. These data were significantly worse than for identically treated patients with chronic tennis elbow. Thus, the question arises as to whether extracorporal shock-wave therapy is indicated in medial epicondylitis.
Liver assessment and biopsy in patients with marked coagulopathy: value of mini-laparoscopy and control of bleeding.
2003
Evaluation of liver disease in patients with a high risk of postbiopsy bleeding presents a diagnostic challenge. Mini-laparoscopy offers the possibility of coagulation of biopsy site and the additional advantage of macroscopic liver assessment. We wished to assess the value and safety of mini-laparoscopy with guided biopsy as a diagnostic approach in patients in whom percutaneous liver biopsy is considered contraindicated because of a marked coagulopathy. We investigated 61 consecutive patients with marked coagulopathy (prolonged international normalized ratio1.5, thrombocytopenia50/nl, or both; von Willebrand's disease/hemophilia). Diagnostic mini-laparoscopy with visually guided liver biop…
Post-LASIK Visual Quality With a Corneoscleral Contact Lens to Treat Irregular Corneas.
2015
To evaluate the visual quality results of fitting a corneoscleral contact lens with multiaspheric geometry design (MAGD CScL) in subjects with irregular corneas after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery. From a database of patients evaluated for scleral contact lenses, we identified those with irregular corneas and visual problems after they underwent LASIK surgery for correcting myopia. They manifested unsatisfactory visual quality with their current contact lenses or glasses. Therefore, a MAGD CScL was fitted and monitored according to standardized fitting methodology. A diagnostic trial set was used in the fitting process. Visual acuity (VA), subjective visual quality (S…
Design and Baseline Characteristics of the HELP Study: An Extended and Long-Term Observation of Pathological Myopia in Caucasians.
2017
Purpose: To assess the natural disease progression of high myopia in Caucasians considered at risk for the development of myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV). Methods: Subjects were recruited in 25 clinical sites between June 2014 and June 2016. Main inclusion criteria included axial length of ≥26 mm, best-corrected visual acuity ≥0.05 decimal equivalent and presence of at least one out of five predefined morphological disease risk criteria. These were (1) subfoveal choroidal thinning < 50 µm, (2) enhanced choroidal curvature length > 6,300 µm, (3) lacquer cracks, (4) patchy atrophy &#x3…
Differences in visual performance of AcrySof ReSTOR IOL in high and low myopic eyes.
2009
PURPOSE To determine the differences in refractive and visual results obtained in eyes with high and low myopia after multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. METHODS Monocular visual acuity for distance and near, with and without distance correction, and photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity were measured at 6 months after surgery in 152 myopic eyes implanted with the AcrySof ReSTOR Natural (SN60D3) IOL. Two groups were created: high and low myopia (76 eyes in each). RESULTS Monocular best distance-corrected visual acuity was 0.02+/-0.06 logMAR for low myopes and 0.05+/-0.09 logMAR for high myopes. Monocular best distance-corrected near visual acuity was 0.04+/-0.05 and 0.07+/-0…
Sports massage with ozonised oil or non-ozonised oil: Comparative effects on recovery parameters after maximal effort in cyclists
2013
Abstract OBJECTIVES: To study the effects of passive rest (PR) and sports massage with (SMOZO) and without (SM) ozonised oil on sports performance psycho-physiological indices in competitive amateur cyclists after 3 pre-fatiguing Wingate cycle and post-recovery ramp tests. DESIGN: An intra-subjects experimental design with repeated measures. SETTING: Department of Human Anatomy and Physiology, University of Padua. PARTICIPANTS: Fifteen male competitive cyclists (age: 27 ± 3.5 years, body weight: 77.6 ± 8.3 kg, height: 178 ± 7.7 cm) were studied. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Subjects' power output (P), heart rate (HR), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score and blood lactate (BL) clearance in response …
Acute Hormonal and Force Responses to Combined Strength and Endurance Loadings in Men and Women: The “Order Effect”
2013
Purpose To examine acute responses and recovery of serum hormones and muscle force following combined strength (S) and endurance (E) loading sessions in which the order of exercises is reversed (ES vs. SE). Methods This cross-over study design included recreationally endurance trained men and women (age 21–45 years, n = 12 men n = 10 women) who performed both loadings. Maximal bilateral isometric strength (MVC), isometric rate of force development (RFD) and serum concentrations of testosterone (T), cortisol (C), growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), binding protein 3 (IGFBP3) and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) were measured during and after both loadings. Results B…
Change in pupil size after implantation of an iris-fixated toric phakic intraocular lens
2005
Purpose To evaluate the changes in pupil size after implantation of an iris-supported toric phakic intraocular lens (TPIOL) for correction of myopia and hyperopia with astigmatism. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. Methods Twenty-two myopic eyes and 9 hyperopic eyes were included in the study. The mean age of the 2 groups was 34 years and 40 years, respectively. The scotopic pupil size was measured with a handheld infrared pupillometer (Colvard, Oasis Medical) before and 6 months after implantation of the TPIOL. All examinations were performed under scotopic conditions after 2 minutes of dark adaptation with the fellow eye covered. Intraindi…
Incidence of heterotopic ossification in minimally invasive short-stem THA using the modified anterolateral approach.
2017
Introduction Heterotopic ossification (HO) is known to be a common complication after total hip arthroplasty (THA). The minimal invasive (MIS) modified anterolateral approach has become popular in combination with a short stem. We analysed the incidence of HO following short-stem THA using this approach in combination with a postoperative administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Materials and methods 216 short stems were implanted in 162 patients. NSAIDs were administered for 2 weeks after surgery in 154 patients (95.1%). Standardised pre- and postoperative radiographic imaging was done at 2-year follow-up. HO was analysed according to the Brooker classification. Inf…
