Energy retrofit of a single-family house: Life cycle net energy saving and environmental benefits
2013
Abstract When a building undergoes a retrofit project, the goal of assessing energy and environmental performances of retrofit actions is a complex matter. Building and its environment are complex systems in which all sub-systems are strongly interdependent and influence the overall efficiency performance. In the following paper, starting from a literature review of building life-cycle studies, the authors highlight that there is a strong interplay among all the phases of a building life-cycle, as each one can affect one or more of the others. In detail, starting from the results of a “cradle to grave” life cycle study of an existing Mediterranean single-family house, a set of retrofit acti…
Comments to the paper "do we really need new medical information about the Turin Shroud?".
2015
Abstract Following the interesting arguments raised in a recent letter to the editor, about a paper recently published in this journal, the authors are happy to take a cue from them to clarify some facts that have not been sufficiently treated for space. After a description of the methods used, arguments regarding a blunt trauma on the right shoulder with consequent dislocation, the position of the hands on the pubis with brachial plexus injury, and the wrist nailing that caused retracted thumbs are discussed in detail.
Presentazione
2013

The intervention presented a premise aimed at reconstructing the Greek and Roman past of Sicily, the importance of the archaeological heritage rediscovered during the years of the Grand Tour and the archaeological excavation campaigns between the 18th and early 20th centuries. Subsequently, the presence of «archaeological» details or at least attributable to Greek and Roman classical art and architecture in the monumental decorations of Sicilian public buildings of the 20th century was analyzed, focusing on the period of the fascist regime. Fascist ideology, inspiration from the Roman past for the constitution of the «Third Rome» and references to it in periodicals and Italian architectural…
Evaluation of Daylight Availability for Energy Savings.
2015
Dynamic daylight simulations are very useful instruments in daylighting design process. They allow an in depth analysis of indoor daylight availability levels and define if they are adequate to perform a particular visual task. Their results can be used to design shading devices or lighting control systems and compare different technical solutions. The use of these simulations is likely to spread in the common design practice since some regulations and green building rating systems suggest their use. This paper presents dynamic daylight simulation results related to an open-plan office, performed with Autodesk 3ds Max Design ® , which is a calculation software validated by recent researches…
The extensional Messaria shear zone and associated brittle detachment faults, Aegean Sea, Greece
2005
Structural, thermochronological and metamorphic data are used to elucidate the tectonic nature and evolution of the ductile extensional Messaria shear zone and the associated brittle Messaria and Fanari detachment faults, which exhumed their footwall from mid-crustal depths on the island of Ikaria in the Aegean. Thermobarometric data indicate that the Messaria shear zone formed at 350–>400 °C and 3–4 kbar (i.e. at a depth of c . 15 km). Normal faulting was accompanied by the intrusion of two granites, which together with the thermobarometric data indicate a relatively high thermal field gradient of 25–35 °C km −1 . Zircon and apatite fission-track and apatite (U–Th)/He ages demonstrate rapi…
Emotional separation and detachment as two distinct dimensions of parent--adolescent relationships
2011
The study examined adolescents’ emotional separation and detachment from parents, analyzing their relations with connectedness and agency, with some aspects of self—other boundary regulation and with problem behavior. The participants were 331 Italian adolescents, aged from 16 to 19 years (mean age = 17.40, SD = 1.14). Separation and detachment were positively related; they were negatively related to connectedness; detachment was also negatively associated to agency. Emotional separation was negatively predicted by empathic concern, perspective-taking and separate self; emotional detachment was negatively predicted by empathic concern and self—other differentiation. Separation negatively p…
BIBF 1120/ nintedanib : a new triple angiokinase inhibitor-directed therapy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.
2013
Abstract: Introduction: Several new targeted agents with anti-angiogenic properties have been developed recently, including vandetanib, sunitinib, sorafenib, bevacizumab and others. Tumor development, progression, metastasis are strongly linked to angiogenesis. Targeted agents like bevacizumab, a monoclonal antibody which targets VEGF, have been fully developed in several solid tumors. These new agents strongly advocate that targeting angiogenesis is one of the best approaches for cancer therapy. Areas covered: Those agents that target additional pro-angiogenic intracellular signaling pathways beyond VEGF signaling have also the potential to contribute to anticancer therapies. The authors p…
Conquests and perspectives of cardio-oncology in the field of tumor angiogenesis-targeting tyrosine kinase inhibitor-based therapy
2015
Abstract: Introduction: Angiogenesis is fundamental for tumor development and progression. Hence, anti-angiogenic drugs have been developed to target VEGF and its receptors (VEGFRs). Several tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been developed over the years and others are still under investigation, each anti-VEGFR TKI showing a different cardiotoxic profile. Knowledge of the cardiac side-effects of each drug and the magnitude of their expression and frequency can lead to a specific approach. Areas covered: This work reviews the mechanism of action of anti-VEGFR TKIs and the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to cardiotoxicity, followed by close examination of the most important drugs i…
