Elevated protein carbonyl and HIF-1α levels in eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
2013
Purpose: To evaluate the role of protein carbonyls and hypoxia inducible factor-1a (HIF-1a) in diabetic eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Methods: Prospective consecutive controlled observational study was performed. Vitreous samples were collected at the start of the 3-ppp vitrectomy. Protein carbonylation analysis was performed by Western blotting with antibody against 2,4-Dinitrophenol (anti-DNP), following derivatization of protein carbonyls with 2,4 Dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNHP). Protein carbonylation was quantified by scanning densitometry analysis and relativized to the total amount of protein into the ponceau staining of membranes. Vitreous HIF-1 a was determined w…
Incidence of Retinal Detachment in Germany: Results from the Gutenberg Health Study
2020
<b><i>Purpose:</i></b> To investigate the incidence of retinal detachment in the German population and to assess potential risk factors. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> The Gutenberg Health Study is a population-based cohort study in Mainz, Germany, including subjects (<i>n</i> = 15,010) with an age range from 35 to 74 years at baseline examination. Study participants underwent a comprehensive ophthalmological examination including distant-corrected visual acuity, refraction and slit-lamp examination at baseline examination. A computer-assisted telephone interview was conducted after 2.5 and 5 years, and health events were recorded. The 5-y…
ACUTE VISION LOSS AS THE ONLY SIGN OF LEUKEMIA RELAPSE.
2016
Purpose To report a case of unilateral exudative retinal detachment as the sole presentation of relapsing B-type lymphoblastic leukemia in a 35-year-old man after 3 years of remission. Methods Case report. Results A 35-year-old man in complete remission of high-risk type B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL-B) presented with acute vision loss in his left eye. Exudative retinal detachment was diagnosed at initial evaluation. Hematological and ocular studies were performed. Although there was no evidence of blood, cerebrospinal fluid, or bone marrow disease relapse, transvitreal retinochoroidal cytology identified the infiltration of lymphoblastic leukemic B cells with t(12:21) translocation a…
Transrenal ureteral occlusion using a detachable balloon
1984
Percutaneous transrenal ureteral occlusion using a detachable balloon filled with silicone was performed in 20 patients. The main indications were palliation of large urinary fistulas and as a treatment of last resort for severe dysuria in patients with advanced pelvic malignancies. In 6 patients the contralateral kidney was rendered nonfunctional to obviate the need for bilateral nephrostomy. Due to frequent obstruction of the tube, ureteral blockage in 3 became insufficient. Two dislocated balloons were extracted percutaneously and replaced. In order to achieve effective interruption of urinary flow down the ureter, well-functioning external nephrostomy drainage is necessary.
The Relevance of Mineral Mobilization and -Dissolution on the Reservoir Quality of Sandstones in CO2 Storage Sites
2014
Abstract Rotliegend siliciclastic formations are important reservoirs in central Europe. These sediments consist of pristine red coloured and bleached, high porous and permeable sandstones. To evaluate the relevance of distinct fluids and their fluid-rock alteration reactions on such bleaching processes laboratory static batch experiments under reservoir conditions were conducted. Thereby mineralogical, petrophysical and (hydro-, geo-) chemical rock features were investigated by different analytical methods before and after the experiments. The achieved results suggest that during such fluid-rock interactions a complex interplay between mineral detachment and mineral dissolution processes w…
The archaeological excavation of the site in Fonteta Ràqu…
A Survey on Daylighting Education in Italian Universities : Knowledge of Standards, Metrics and Simulation Tools
2021
Daylighting is a strategic topic to achieve sustainable buildings, so it is more and more imperative that it is implemented in architecture curricula to prepare a new generation of daylighting-oriented practitioners. In this frame, the DAYKE project (Daylight Knowledge in Europe) was set up to explore the level of knowledge about daylighting among European professionals and students. DAYKE-Europe was replicated as DAYKE-Italy to study the knowledge of daylight standards, metrics and software among Italian architecture students, and to compare it to that observed within DAYKE-Europe. A sample of 542 questionnaires were collected in five universities. Primary outcomes were: (i) a general low …
Uveal effusion syndrome complicated by anterior ischemic optic neuropathy
1995
We report on a case of idiopathic uveal effusion syndrome complicated by AION. To our knowledge such an association hasn't been previously described. We suggest that scleral thickening caused obstruction of vortex veins followed by uveal effusion and compression of posterior ciliary arteries within their intrascleral tract, leading to AION. Nevertheless it can't be excluded that AION was the result of mechanical compression on ciliary vessels of optic disc by choroidal detachment. © 1996, Kluwer Academic Publishers. All rights reserved.
Influence of chitin nanocrystals on the dielectric behaviour and conductivity of chitosan-based bionanocomposites
2018
[EN] A series of bionanocomposite films based on chitosan, reinforced with chitin nanocrystals, were developed, and assessed in terms of dielectric behaviour and conductivity by using an experimental methodology that allows avoiding the conductivity contribution and the exclusion of contact and interfacial polarization effects. The dielectric relaxations at low and high frequency and temperatures were modeled by Havriliak-Negami functions. Below the glass transition temperature (Tg), the gamma and beta relaxations were observed, which were related to intramolecular and non-cooperative segmental movements. At higher temperatures, an intermolecular and cooperative macromolecular movement, rel…
Void Zone: Readings of Fear and Solitude in the Post-industrial/Post-modern City
2009
The explosion of the city consequent to the industrial revolution and, even more, the sprawling diffusion arising in Europe from the post-industrial transformations let us talk about the disappearing of the border of the city. A diffuse urbanization cancer wastes the landscape and finally the city can be defined more for what it's not (it's no country, it's no natural landscape, it's no nature) than for a definite urban space. If the city is configured principally by its surplus (interstices, spaces under, undefined extensions of un-urban urbanization, infrastructural nets...), in a different sense we may, finally, talk about the thickening of the border of the contemporary, postmodern, Eur…
