Dark Matter Search Results from a One Ton-Year Exposure of XENON1T

2018

We report on a search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) using 278.8 days of data collected with the XENON1T experiment at LNGS. XENON1T utilizes a liquid xenon time projection chamber with a fiducial mass of $(1.30 \pm 0.01)$ t, resulting in a 1.0 t$\times$yr exposure. The energy region of interest, [1.4, 10.6] $\mathrm{keV_{ee}}$ ([4.9, 40.9] $\mathrm{keV_{nr}}$), exhibits an ultra-low electron recoil background rate of $(82\substack{+5 \\ -3}\textrm{ (sys)}\pm3\textrm{ (stat)})$ events/$(\mathrm{t}\times\mathrm{yr}\times\mathrm{keV_{ee}})$. No significant excess over background is found and a profile likelihood analysis parameterized in spatial and energy dimensions exclude…

Background discrimination capabilities of a heat and ionization germanium cryogenic detector

2001

The discrimination capabilities of a 70 g heat and ionization Ge bolometer are studied. This first prototype has been used by the EDELWEISS Dark Matter experiment, installed in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane, for direct detection of WIMPs. Gamma and neutron calibrations demonstrate that this type of detector is able to reject more than 99.6% of the background while retaining 95% of the signal, provided that the background events distribution is not biased towards the surface of the Ge crystal. However, the 1.17 kg.day of data taken in a relatively important radioactive environment show an extra population slightly overlapping the signal. This background is likely due to interactions o…

Optical multichannel sensing of skin blood pulsations

2004

Time resolved detection and analysis of the skin back-scattered optical signals (reflection photoplethysmography or PPG) provide information on skin blood volume pulsations and can serve for cardiovascular assessment. The multi-channel PPG concept has been developed and clinically verified in this study. Portable two- and four-channel PPG monitoring devices have been designed for real-time data acquisition and processing. The multi-channel devices were successfully applied for cardiovascular fitness tests and for early detection of arterial occlusions in extremities. The optically measured heartbeat pulse wave propagation made possible to estimate relative arterial resistances for numerous …

Parameter Rating by Diffusion Gradient

2014

Anomaly detection is a central task in high-dimensional data analysis. It can be performed by using dimensionality reduction methods to obtain a low-dimensional representation of the data, which reveals the geometry and the patterns that exist and govern it. Usually, anomaly detection methods classify high-dimensional vectors that represent data points as either normal or abnormal. Revealing the parameters (i.e., features) that cause detected abnormal behaviors is critical in many applications. However, this problem is not addressed by recent anomaly-detection methods and, specifically, by nonparametric methods, which are based on feature-free analysis of the data. In this chapter, we provi…

An alternative simple approach to estimate atmospheric correction in multitemporal studies

1989

Abstract Studies that use multitemporal images require the conversion of original digital data into the corresponding physical magnitudes. Atmospheric correction is one of the most important steps in this process, which is usually undertaken using atmospheric radiative transfer models. The main difficulty in these models is the need of atmospheric input data which are not usually available. An alternative approach to atmospheric correction is proposed in this Letter. It is based on the idea that the atmospheric effects over two or more dates can be determined in a relative way, by using the apparent reflectance values of surfaces whose ground reflectance can be considered unchangeable with …

Machine learning in remote sensing data processing

2009

Remote sensing data processing deals with real-life applications with great societal values. For instance urban monitoring, fire detection or flood prediction from remotely sensed multispectral or radar images have a great impact on economical and environmental issues. To treat efficiently the acquired data and provide accurate products, remote sensing has evolved into a multidisciplinary field, where machine learning and signal processing algorithms play an important role nowadays. This paper serves as a survey of methods and applications, and reviews the latest methodological advances in machine learning for remote sensing data analysis.

Cloud masking and removal in remote sensing image time series

2017

Automatic cloud masking of Earth observation images is one of the first required steps in optical remote sensing data processing since the operational use and product generation from satellite image time series might be hampered by undetected clouds. The high temporal revisit of current and forthcoming missions and the scarcity of labeled data force us to cast cloud screening as an unsupervised change detection problem in the temporal domain. We introduce a cloud screening method based on detecting abrupt changes along the time dimension. The main assumption is that image time series follow smooth variations over land (background) and abrupt changes will be mainly due to the presence of clo…

Evaluation of a Computer Vision Based Automatic Incident and Congestion Detection System in an Urban Context

1994

Abstract The objective of the document is to describe an Automatic Incident and Congestions Detection System based on computer vision technology, in an urban environment. The document outlines the main technical features of the system and presents the first evaluation results obtained in a field trial currently carried out in protect INVAII) II. within the Transport Telematics Programme of the EC. CCTV cameras are installed in urban street intersections lor surveillance purposes. Based on image processing techniques. the Video Analyzers or Local Sensor Modules (LSM) connected to a number of selected cameras, obtain the traffic status measurements within the field of view of each one of them…

The Belle II Pixel Detector Data Acquisition and Background Suppression System

2017

The Belle II experiment at the future SuperKEKB collider in Tsukuba, Japan, features a design luminosity of 8 1035 cm−2s−1, which is a factor of 40 larger than that of its predecessor Belle. The pixel detector (PXD) with about 8 million pixels is based on the DEPFET technology and will improve the vertex resolution in beam direction by a factor of 2. With an estimated trigger rate of 30 kHz, the PXD is expected to generate a data rate of 20 GBytes/s, which is about 10 times larger than the amount of data generated by all other Belle II subdetectors. Due to the large beam-related background, the PXD requires a data acquisition system with high-bandwidth data links and realtime background red…
