Deglaciation history of Latvia

2004

This chapter discusses the deglaciation history of Latvia. The earliest deglaciation schemes of Latvia were based entirely on morphological features. The spatial distribution of glacial landforms, with crests transverse to glacier movement combined with radiocarbon dates and biostratigraphical evidence, have provided the principal data for the reconstruction of the deglaciation process from the mid-1960s until the present. A deglaciation history should be based on multiple criteria. Attention should be paid to the identification of ice-marginal formations, and complex studies are also needed, including the investigation of the spatial distribution and internal composition of subglacial land…

Repercussion of anthropogenic landscape changes on pedodiversity and preservation of the pedological heritage

2013

Over a period of time people have lived in and with their surrounding landscapes and for several thousand years transformed the soilscapes and the vegetation into cultural landscape types important for their economy and to meet their needs (Richter 2007, Ellis 2011, Hjelle 2012). The sustainable provision of goods and services depends critically on managing soils without damaging the natural soilscapes and the related natural resources. To support the transition towards sustainable development, science needs to understand how land-use change affects the environment and how this, in turn, feeds back into human livelihood strategies or infl uences the vulnerability of the environment (Rounsev…

Testing GIS-morphometric analysis of some Sicilian badlands

2014

Abstract Calanchi badlands are erosion landforms characterized by areas with scarce or absent vegetation, steep slopes, knife-edge divides and high erosion rates. They are originated by a combination of morphogenetic processes, partly similar to those shaping bigger fluvial landforms, and therefore can be considered as field “laboratories.” This paper presents the results of an investigation carried out in two badland sites located in Sicily, where the geometry of 25 calanchi has been characterized using Digital Elevation Models having a mesh size equal to 2 m. For each landform, a power length–volume relationship is established. This relationship demonstrates that length of calanchi channe…

A new empirical model for estimating calanchi Erosion in Sicily, Italy

2015

Abstract Calanchi (plural of calanco) are typical badland landforms of the Italian landscape. They consist of dense networks of V-shaped valleys, with a sparse or absent vegetation cover, which frequently develop on unconsolidated or poorly consolidated clayey deposits. In this paper, the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity theory were used to deduce a model relating the volume of sediments eroded from the calanchi area to a set of geometric attributes of their tributary areas. The morphometric characteristics of 209 calanchi basins were used to calibrate and validate the model. The predictive skill of the model was assessed by calculating the mean square error and the N…

El Lahar Tinguiririca: su significado entre los Lahares chilenos

1982

The Tinguiririca lahar is an example of many similar landforms, which cover large surfaces 60th in andine valleys and the Chilean longitudinal depression. I t is smaller than other ones in Chile, but - at the same time - better conserved, offering good conditions for genetic, kinematic and geochronologic studies, respecting volcanic mudflows. From the genetic and kinematic point of view, the longitudinal lahar profile may be in two parts: a) An upper and middle accumulative area, with concave transverse profile; b) A low accumulative area; whose transverse profile is convexe. These two profiles could be explained by means of braking process in lateral parts, related to central parts, as a f…

Forward logistic regression for earth-flow landslide susceptibility assessment in the Platani river basin (southern Sicily, Italy)

2013

Forward logistic regression has allowed us to derive an earth-flow susceptibility model for the Tumarrano river basin, which was defined by modeling the statistical relationships between an archive of 760 events and a set of 20 predictors. For each landslide in the inventory, a landslide identification point (LIP) was automatically produced as corresponding to the highest point along the boundary of the landslide polygons, and unstable conditions were assigned to cells at a distance up to 8 m. An equal number of stable cells (out of landslides) was then randomly extracted and appended to the LIPs to prepare the dataset for logistic regression. A model building strategy was applied to enlarg…

Persistence of oxidation state III of gold in thione coordination

2017

Ligands N,N'-tetramethylthiourea and 2-mercapto-1-methyl-imidazole form stable Au(III) complexes [AuCl3(N,N'-tetramethylthiourea)] (1) and [AuCl3(2-mercapto-1-methyl-imidazole)] (2) instead of reducing the Au(III) metal center into Au(I), which would be typical for the attachment of sulfur donors. Compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by spectroscopic methods and by X-ray crystallography. The spectroscopic details were explained by simulation of the UV-Vis spectra via the TD-DFT method. Additionally, computational DFT studies were performed in order to find the reason for the unusual oxidation state in the crystalline materials. The preference for Au(III) can be explained via various weak in…

There are numerous studies that in the most recent period investigate the transformation of the family, an institution present in all human societies. Subject analyzed by different disciplines and with multiple cuts, it has represented a cornerstone of anthropological reflection, since its emergence at the end of the nineteenth century, as well as sociology and psychology

Nonni caregiver e famiglie headed by grandparents

2020

The volume begins with a reflection on the multiple and changing forms that contemporary families have assumed. The new trends in the social sciences emphasize, in fact, an increasingly accentuated gap between the nuclear family, a union between "the social and the legal" and a multitude of new family models, a synthesis of choices and assumptions of responsibility in the perspective of care and of the well-being of the other. There are numerous studies that in the most recent period investigate the transformation of the family, an institution present in all human societies. Subject analyzed by different disciplines and with multiple cuts, it has represented a cornerstone of anthropological…
