Direct Measurement of Methane Emission Rates: Multiyear Application to a Municipal Landfill in Southern Italy

2012

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfills have been identified as one of the most important sources of methane (CH4) emission. MSW contains a certain amount of biodegradable organic matter which undergoes anaerobic degradation resulting in the production of the landfill gas (LFG), which main component is tipically represented by CH4. In order to minimise its negative effects on the envi-ronment, LFG recovery is a suitable tool to control CH4 emissions from a landfill site and the measurement of CH4 emissions represents a good way to evaluate the effectiveness of LFG recover-ing system in reducing biogas emission to the atmosphere. However, up to now few measurements of landfill CH4 emissions ha…

CO-TREATMENT OF LANDFILL LEACHATE IN SBR SYSTEM: LAB-SCALE CASE STUDY REPORT

2015

SUMMARY: Landfill leachate represents nowadays one of the most controversial topics in the waste management cycle. A possible alternative for treating aged landfill leachate is represented by the co-treatment with municipal wastewater (MWW) that provides the necessary amount of biodegradable substances to enhance the development of bacteria metabolism. The correct tradeoff between landfill leachate and MWW represent a key factor in order to avoid inhibition of biomass activity. The paper reports the results of an experimental research carried out on two lab-scale Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBRs) fed with synthetic wastewater and landfill leachate in different percentages (SBR1 fed with 20% …

Estimation of methane emission by a municipal landfill: the case of Palermo

2010

CH4 diffuse emissions from municipal solid waste landfills represent one of the most important anthropogenic source of greenhouse-gas. CH4 is produced by anaerobic biodegradation of organic matter in land-filled MSW and it constitutes the major component of landfill gas. Gas recovery is a suitable tool to effectively control CH4 emissions from landfill sites and the quantification of CH4 emissions represents a good tool to evaluate the effectiveness of biogas recovering system in reducing biogas emission. In particular, LFG emissions can be indirectly evaluated from mass balance equations between formation, recovery and oxidation of biogas in the landfill, as well as on a direct approach ba…

Formation Of perched leachate zones in MSW landfill

2010

The paper presents a 1D mathematical model for the simulation of the percolation fluxes throughout a landfill for municipal solid waste (MSW). Specifically, the model is based on mass balance equations, that enable one to simulate the formation of perched leachate zones in a landfill for MSW. The model considers the landfill divided in several layers evaluating the in and out flow throughout each layer as well as the continuous moisture distribution. The infiltration flow is evaluated by means of the Darcy’s law for an unsaturated porous medium, while the moisture distribution evaluation has been carried out on the basis of the theory of the vertically distributed unsaturated flow. The solu…

Mathematical modelling of biogas from municipal solid waste landfil

2016

Sanitary landfills for municipal solid wastes can be considered as large biological reactors where the organic fraction of municipal solid waste undergoes anaerobic digestion producing gas and liquid emissions. Leachate production from municipal sanitary landfills is currently recognized as a major environmental burden associated with municipal solid waste management and it may be responsible for local pollution of groundwater and soil. Moreover, the fate of the organic compounds within the landfill body is of primary importance since it directly influences the production of landfill gas. The aim of the paper is to propose an integrated mathematical model able to simulate, on one hand, the …

First proposal of a methodology for a preventive assessment of the acoustic impact of advanced landfills

2005

In this paper, the results of a preliminary study on the environmental noise pollution of a technologically advanced landfill to be realized in Sicily (Italy) are presented. The investigation has been carried out analysing, at the beginning, a simulating model suggested by the European Community. The method makes reference to the ISO 9613-2:1996 standard, which suggests a general method of calculation to assess the attenuation of sound during propagation outdoors. The simulation has pointed out the troubles in carrying out the noise pollution assessment of an advanced landfill, where several and different kinds of sound sources are present at the same time; it isn’t always possible, for exa…

Perception of illusory surfaces and contours in goldfish

2007

Goldfish(Carassius auratus)were trained to discriminate triangles and squares using a two choice procedure. In the first experiment, three goldfish were trained with food reward on a black outline triangle on a white background, while a black outline square was shown for comparison. In transfer tests, a Kanizsa triangle and a Kanizsa square were presented, perceived by humans as an illusory triangle- or square-shaped surface of slightly higher brightness than the background. The choice behavior in this situation indicates that goldfish are able to discriminate between both figures in almost the same way as in the training situation. In control experiments goldfish did not discriminate betwe…

Determining the potential impacts of fire and different land uses on splash erosion in the margins of drylands

2021

Abstract This research aimed to estimate the splash erosion and its evolution during the first months in specific land uses after a forest fire. The study area was located in Congosto (North-West Spain), in the margins of Spanish drylands, after a wildfire occurred in May 2012, which burned 15.56 ha of scrubland and Pinus reforestation. Two different burned land uses were selected and compared to control areas: i) burned pine forest; and, scrublands. Rainfall intensity and the number, sizes and speed of raindrops were measured by an optical disdrometer and soil loss by funnels. Moreover, infiltration, soil moisture content, aggregate stability, water repellence, pH and organic matter were a…

Hierarchical structure and cytocompatibility of fish scales from Carassius auratus

2014

Abstract To study the structure and the cytocompatibility of fish scales from Carassius auratus , scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the morphology of fish scales treated with different processing methods. Based on varying morphologies and components, the fish scales can be divided into three regions on the surface and three layers in vertical. The functions of these three individual layers were analyzed. SEM results show that the primary inorganic components are spherical or cubic hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles. The fish scales have an ~ 60° overlapped plywood structure of lamellas in the fibrillary plate. The plywood structure consists of co-aligned type I collagen …

Methane oxidation at a surface-sealed boreal landfill.

2009

Abstract Methane oxidation was studied at a closed boreal landfill (area 3.9 ha, amount of deposited waste 200,000 tonnes) equipped with a passive gas collection and distribution system and a methane oxidative top soil cover integrated in a European Union landfill directive-compliant, multilayer final cover. Gas wells and distribution pipes with valves were installed to direct landfill gas through the water impermeable layer into the top soil cover. Mean methane emissions at the 25 measuring points at four measurement times (October 2005–June 2006) were 0.86–6.2 m 3  ha −1  h −1 . Conservative estimates indicated that at least 25% of the methane flux entering the soil cover at the measuring…
