ABSTRACTS: 9 Phenotype characterization of the anti-inflammatory behavior of decidual endothelial cells
2008
Problem: During pregnancy, an adequate inflammatory control is essential for normal intrauterine foetus development. Vascular endothelium is known to play a critical role in regulation of inflammatory processes. We hypothesize a different ability of decidual endothelial cells (DEC) compared to endothelium from other districts to respond to inflammatory stimuli. Material and Methods: DEC were isolated and activated with inflammatory stimuli and their response in term of adhesion molecules expression, vascular leakage and cytokines production was evaluated. These data were compared to the data obtained with HUVEC and microvascular endothelial cells isolated from human skin (ADMEC) and from …
Platelet Function Tests and Coronary Heart Disease
1984
It is well known that the formation of a platelet aggregate is the first step in an arterial thrombotic process.
Diacylglycerol kinase α mediatses 17-β-estradiol-induced proliferation, motility, and anchorage-independent growth of Hec-1A endometrial cancer cell …
2011
Increased levels of endogenous and/or exogenous estrogens are one of the well known risk factors of endometrial cancer. Diacylglycerol kinases (DGKs) are a family of enzymes which phosphorylate diacylglycerol (DAG) to produce phosphatidic acid (PA), thus turning off and on DAG-mediated and PA-mediated signaling pathways, respectively. DGK α activity is stimulated by growth factors and oncogenes and is required for chemotactic, proliferative, and angiogenic signaling in vitro. Herein, using either specific siRNAs or the pharmacological inhibitor R59949, we demonstrate that DGK α activity is required for 17-β-estradiol (E2)-induced proliferation, motility, and anchorage-independent growth of …
Neopterin, cellular adhesion molecules and myeolperoxidase in patients with stable and unstable angina pectoris
2011
Neopterin, cellular adhesion molecules and myeolperoxidase in patients with stable and unstable angina pectoris Recent data indicate that the serum level of neopterin, a marker of inflammation and immune modulator secreted by monocytes/macrophages, is elevated in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and seems to be a prognostic marker for major cardiovascular events. Soluble cellular adhesion molecules (sCAMs) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels are also related to ACS. The aim of the present study was to evaluate differences in serum levels of neopterin, sCAMs and MPO between coronary artery disease and metabolic syndrome (CAD-MetS) patients with stable and unstable angina pectoris (SA…
Microarray-based mutation analysis of 183 Spanish families with Usher syndrome.
2010
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to test the ability of the genotyping microarray for Usher syndrome (USH) to identify the mutations responsible for the disease in a cohort of 183 patients with USH. METHODS. DNA from 183 patients with Usher syndrome from the Spanish population was analyzed using a genotyping microarray containing 429 previously identified disease-associated variants in eight USH genes. Mutations detected by the array were confirmed by direct sequencing. Haplotype analysis was also performed in families carrying common Spanish mutations. RESULTS. The genotyping microarray identified 43 different variants, divided into 32 disease causative and 11 probably non-pathologic…
Nationwide Analysis on Surgical Staging Procedures and Systemic Treatment for Patients With Endometrial Cancer in Germany
2012
ObjectiveIn 2009 and 2006, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Gynäkologische Onkologie evaluated therapeutic approaches for endometrial carcinoma (EC) in Germany. Methods and MaterialsA questionnaire was developed and sent to 775 German gynecologic departments in 2009 (500 in 2006). The results of the questionnaires were compared with each other and with the recommendations of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Gynäkologische Onkologie’s guideline. Subgroup analyses were performed, dividing the participating centers into small and large centers and into centers with less and more experience with EC.ResultsResponses were available in 33.3% in 2009 and 35.8% in 2006. Comparing 2009 with 2006, it became apparent tha…
Determinants of health policy impact: comparative results of a European policymaker study.
2003
This article will use a new theoretical framework for the analysis of health policy impact introduced by Rütten et al. (2003). In particular, it will report on a comparative European study of policymakers' perception and evaluation of specific determinants of the policy impact, both in terms of output (implemented measures) and outcome (health behaviour change). Policy determinants investigated are goals, resources, obligations and opportunities as related to the policymaking process.Theory is applied to a comparative analysis of prevention and health promotion policy in Belgium, Finland, Germany. The Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland. The study is MED2-part of a project that has developed…
An alternative role of C1q in cell migration and tissue remodeling: contribution to trophoblast invasion and placental development.
2010
Abstract Fetal trophoblast cells invading the decidua in the early phase of pregnancy establish complex interaction with the maternal extracellular matrix. We discovered that C1q was widely distributed in human decidual stroma in the absence of C4 and C3 and was actively synthesized by migrating extravillous trophoblasts. The cells expressed the messages for the three chains of C1q and secreted this complement component that interacted with the proteins of the decidual extracellular matrix. Solid phase-bound C1q promoted trophoblast adhesion and migration, and cell binding to C1q resulted in activation of ERK1/2 MAPKs. Ab inhibition experiments showed that the receptors for the globular hea…
Eight-point compass rose underlay technique in 72 consecutive elderly patients with large incisional hernia
2011
Summary Background Repair of incisional hernia (IH) in the elderly is a challenge for the surgeon. Primary closure is preferable but is not always possible because of high recurrence rates of IH repaired without a prosthesis and/or possible respiratory and cardiovascular complications due to extreme tension of the margins. We report our experience with underlay mesh placement in elderly patients with large IH. Methods A total of 72 patients from January 2003 to December 2009 underwent IH repair involving placement of an intraperitoneal Gore® DualMesh® prosthesis. The prosthesis was first anchored at eight points in a compass rose pattern using a Gore® suture passer and then firmly secured t…
Computed tomography of bowel obstruction: Tricks of the trade
2015
Bowel obstruction (BO) is a frequent cause of hospitalization and surgical consultation for acute abdominal pain. It is usually suspected at physical examination, but clinical and laboratory data are often nonspecific. Thus, computed tomography plays a crucial role in a correct diagnosis of BO. Indeed, computed tomography can confirm a diagnosis of BO, and identify the location and cause of the obstruction. In this review, the computed tomography appearances of common and uncommon causes of BO and pseudo-obstruction are reviewed.
