Hypothalamic S-Nitrosylation Contributes to the Counter-Regulatory Response Impairment following Recurrent Hypoglycemia
2013
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23894333; International audience; AIMS: Hypoglycemia is a severe side effect of intensive insulin therapy. Recurrent hypoglycemia (RH) impairs the counter-regulatory response (CRR) which restores euglycemia. During hypoglycemia, ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) production of nitric oxide (NO) and activation of its receptor soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) are critical for the CRR. Hypoglycemia also increases brain reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. NO production in the presence of ROS causes protein S-nitrosylation. S-nitrosylation of sGC impairs its function and induces desensitization to NO. We hypothesized that during hypoglycemia, the interaction b…

Impact of diabetes mellitus on outcomes in patients with myocardial infarction according to varying degrees of left ventricular systolic dysfunction.
2022
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is known to contribute to unfavorable short- and long-term outcomes in patients with myocardial infarction (MI). Particularly poor outcomes are associated with left ventricular systolic dysfunction after an MI. The aim of our study was to compare the short- and long-term outcomes of MI in patients with DM and varied degrees of left ventricular systolic dysfunction with the corresponding outcomes in a non-diabetic control group. Methods: This analysis focused on patients with MI registered in the Polish National Registry of Acute Coronary Syndrome between 2009 and 2011. For the purposes of this analysis, diabetic patients were additionally stratified into t…
Genome-Wide Association Study of Diabetic Kidney Disease Highlights Biology Involved in Glomerular Basement Membrane Collagen
2019
BACKGROUND: Although diabetic kidney disease demonstrates both familial clustering and single nucleotide polymorphism heritability, the specific genetic factors influencing risk remain largely unknown.METHODS: To identify genetic variants predisposing to diabetic kidney disease, we performed genome-wide association study (GWAS) analyses. Through collaboration with the Diabetes Nephropathy Collaborative Research Initiative, we assembled a large collection of type 1 diabetes cohorts with harmonized diabetic kidney disease phenotypes. We used a spectrum of ten diabetic kidney disease definitions based on albuminuria and renal function.RESULTS: Our GWAS meta-analysis included association result…
Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors, diabetes, and oxidative stress

Abstract Diabetes and related metabolic diseases have a high prevalence with increasing incidence and create a significant socioeconomic burden by their contribution to global mortality and disability adjusted life years. Whereas the contribution of communicable disease to global deaths decreased during the last 25 years, the contribution by chronic noncommunicable disease and environmental factors increased within this time period. According to data of the Global Burden of Disease Study high fasting plasma glucose and high total cholesterol rank in place 3 and 4 in the list of global health risk factors, just behind high blood pressure and smoking. Diabetes adversely affects endothelial an…
Implementation and Outcomes of Lay Health Worker-Led Self-Management Interventions for Long-Term Conditions and Prevention: A Systematic Review.
2019
The aim of this study was to systematically review lay health worker (LHW)–led self-management interventions for adults with long-term conditions to see how the interventions have been implemented and to compose a synthesis of research findings, taking into consideration the intervention components that have been applied. We conducted systematic searches for articles published between January 2010 and December 2015 in five databases: Cochrane, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Forty original studies were found that met the inclusion criteria: self-management with diabetes ( n = 29), cardiovascular diseases ( n = 8), and those at risk of cardiovascular diseases ( n = 3). These …

2021
Metabolic disorders and gastroenteropancreatic-neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs): How do they influence each other? An Italian Association of Medical …
2022
Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs) are a heterogeneous group of malignancies derived from neuroendocrine cells that can occur anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract. GEP-NETs incidence has been steadily increasing over the past decades, in parallel with the increasing incidence of the metabolic syndrome (MetS). It is not yet fully known whether the MetS components (such as obesity, dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes) could be involved in the etiology of GEP-NETs or could influence their outcomes. In this review, a panel of experts of the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM), Italian Association of Medical Diabetologists (AMD), Italian Society of Endocrinology…
