Risposta insulo-secretrice al carico endovenoso di tolbutamide

1968

Effects of hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic agents on atherogenic small, dense LDL in Type 2 diabetes

2011

Type 2 diabetes is associated with a cluster of inter-related plasma lipid and lipoprotein abnormalities, including reduced HDL-C, a predominance of small, dense LDL and elevated triglycerides. These abnormalities occur even in prediabetes, before blood sugars rise sufficiently in order to confirm a diagnosis of diabetes, and this transition phase incurs important cardiovascular risk. This is the rationale for paying attention to dyslipidemia through the use of the hypolipidemic, rather than hypoglycemic drugs only. A literature search (by Medline and Scopus) was performed. The authors also manually reviewed the references of selected articles for any pertinent material. Beyond the ‘quantit…

Renal resistive index: Beyond the hemodynamics

2020

We read with great interest the original article entitled “Prognostic significance of the renal resistive index in the primary prevention of type II diabetes” by Delsart et al1 In this issue of The Journal, the authors interestingly underlined the prognostic value of renal resistive index (RRI) in diabetic subjects and its role as an independent predictor of a first cardiovascular or renal event. Similar conclusions were previously obtained by others in different subsets of patients (hypertension, chronic kidney disease, or heart failure), in which intrarenal hemodynamic alterations showed to be independent predictors of cardiovascular events. It is likely that the mechanisms underlying ren…

The endocrine response to severe burn trauma.

2013

The endocrine system is frequently altered after a major burn trauma. Besides the endocrine response to stress characterized by hypercortisolism, several hypothalamus-hypophysis-target gland axes are rapidly perturbed within a few days. These alterations can persist in the long term and deserve an appropriate treatment. Disturbances in water clearance and glucidic metabolism are also common and need to be diagnosed and corrected to decrease morbidity in such patients. Bone and mineral metabolism is deeply compromised and requires correction of mineral abnormalities in order to improve symptoms and prevent bone loss. No large prospective and/or intervention trials are available to date to el…

Oral drug therapy following bariatric surgery: an overview of fundamentals, literature and clinical recommendations

2016

Bariatric surgery is the most effective solution for severe obesity and obesity with comorbidities, and the number of patients going through bariatric surgery is rapidly and constantly growing. The modified gastrointestinal anatomy of the patient may lead to significant pharmacokinetic alterations in the oral absorption of drugs after the surgery; however, because of insufficient available literature and inadequate awareness of the medical team, bariatric surgery patients may be discharged from the hospital with insufficient instructions regarding their medication therapy. In this article, we aim to present the various mechanisms by which bariatric surgery may influence oral drug absorption…

In vitro effects of oil's fatty acids on T cell function in gestational diabetic pregnant women and their newborns 油类脂肪酸在体外对妊娠期糖尿病孕妇及其新生儿的T细胞功能的影响

2014

Background The aim of this investigation was to determine the in vitro effects of linseed, olive and Nigel oils on T cell proliferation and function in gestational diabetes. Methods Blood samples were collected from 40 control healthy and 32 gestational diabetic mothers and their newborns. Peripheral blood lymphocytes were isolated using a density gradient of Ficoll. T cell proliferation, interleukin-2 and -4 (IL-2, IL-4) secretion, fatty acid composition and intracellular oxidative status were investigated. Results Mitogen (Concanavalin A) stimulated lymphocyte proliferation, IL-2 secretion, intracellular reduced glutathione levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities were l…

A matter of fat: insulin resistance and oxidative stress

2012

Background Obesity is linked to insulin resistance (IR), which can lead to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Oxidative stress present in early obesity may favor the progression to comorbid conditions. Objective To examine the relationship between oxidative stress biomarkers and the severity of IR in a group of obese children. Methods Forty obese children with a body mass index (BMI) Z-score ≥ 2 were divided into two groups using the median obtained for the homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR). Anthropometric parameters (including body fat composition by bioelectrical impedance) and biochemical parameters were assessed. The following biomarkers of oxidative stress were measured: malondialdeh…
