Metabolic Aspects of Migraine: Association With Obesity and Diabetes Mellitus

2021

Migraine is a disabling neurovascular disorder, characterized by moderate to severe unilateral headaches, nausea, photophobia, and/or phonophobia, with a higher prevalence in women than in men, which can drastically affect the quality of life of migraine patients. In addition, this chronic disorder is related with metabolic comorbidities associated with the patient's lifestyle, including obesity and diabetes mellitus (DM). Beyond the personal and socioeconomic impact caused by migraine, obesity and DM, it has been suggested that these metabolic disorders seem to be related to migraine since: (i) they are a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disorders or chronic diseases; (ii) they ca…

0102: Atherogenic lipid profile and lipid peroxide products of patients with rheumatoid arthritis

2016

IntroductionRheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic relapsing immune-inflammatory multisystem disease with predominant synovial proliferation and destruction of articular cartilage. Patients with RA have a higher riskof mortality related to increased risk of cardiovascular disease with atherogenic lipid profile. In recent years, oxidative stress in RA patients has received considerable attention and has been implicated as mediators of tissue damage and cardio-vascular disease in patients with RA.The aim of the present study was to assess the lipid profile and lipid peroxide products of patients with rheumatoid arthritis compared with healthy controls.Patients and MethodsThe study included 70…

Pre-operative diclofenac HPβCD for pain control of needle biopsy in musculoskeletal neoplasm: preliminary results.

2015

Needle biopsy is the main standard method used for diagnosis of musculoskeletal tumors of the limbs and superficial trunk. Pain control during this procedure is through the use of Local Anaestetic (L.A.). In order to achieve a complete pain control in our cases, recently we started using diclofenac HPβCD 50 mg via s.c. preoperativly. We present the clinical results of a non-randomized study of two eterogeneous groups of patients: "Experimental" Group (1): diclofenac HPβCD 50 mg via s.c. one hour before surgical procedure, local anesthesia and ev. diclofenac HPβCD 50 mg via s.c. 12 hours postoperative; "Conventional" Group (2): local anesthesia and ev. postoperative tramadol 100 mg via oral …

Mucormycosis of maxillary sinus in a newly diagnosed case of diabetes mellitus

2019

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is the third most common fungal infection after aspergillosis and candidiasis. The importance of mucormycosis has grown in recent years, as the number of patients has increased dramatically. Herein, we present a case of a newly diagnosed patient of diabetes mellitus having ulcerated palate and destruction of maxillary sinus evident on computed tomography scan. A biopsy report was suggestive of mucormycosis. Aggressive medical and surgical treatment was done along with the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

PO-58 - Cardiovascular risk profile in survivors of adult cancer - results from the general population study.

2016

The advancements in cancer treatment and detection of early cancer have resulted in steady increase of adult cancer survivors over the years. However, due to the long term toxic effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is increasing in survivors. Identifying risk factors and interventions to reduce the excess burden of CVD in this vulnerable population is urgently needed. To investigate the cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs), inflammation and coagulation profile in cancer survivors from a large population-based study.Presence of CVRFs and laboratory markers have been compared in individuals with (n=1,359) and without (n=13,626) history of canc…

Fat mass accumulation compromises bone adaptation to load in finnish women: A cross-sectional study spanning three generations

2010

Body weight and lean mass correlate with bone mass, but the relationship between fat mass and bone remains elusive. The study population consisted of 396 girls and 138 premenopausal mothers and 114 postmenopausal grandmothers of these girls. Body composition and tibial length were assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and bone traits were determined at the tibia using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) in the girls at the ages of 11.2 ± 0.8, 13.2 ± 0.9, and 18.3 ± 1.0 years and in the mothers (44.7 ± 4.1 years) and grandmothers (70.7 ± 6.3 years). The values of relative bone strength index (RBSI), an index reflecting the ratio of bone strength to the load ap…

Hirsutism: investigation and management.

2019

In all hirsute women, a careful diagnostic evaluation should be performed, and the findings will largely influence the therapeutic decisions and the follow-up of the patients. An assay of serum 17-OH progesterone is needed, while the measurement of total testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin, with the calculation of free androgen index, are useful to assess androgen secretion. Other tests should be suggested only according to responses of specific clinical questions. Owing to their high cardiovascular and metabolic risk, patients with polycystic ovary syndrome should have an oral glucose-tolerance test and a complete lipid profile. No ideal treatment for hirsutism exists but, with c…

Polycythemia Vera as a Predisposing Factor for Aortic Stenosis: Prevalence and Correlation with Blood Cells Count and Mutational Status

2008

Abstract The association between Polycythemia Vera (PV) and thrombosis is multi-factorial involving the complex interaction between activated leukocytes, platelets and endothelium. Recent reports have postulated that PV patients may over express adhesive molecules on red cell surface, likely by JAK2 mutation (Wautier M et al. Blood.2007;110(3):894–901). This process activates endothelium with production of vascular growth factors and other mechanisms leading to atherosclerosis. Aortic Stenosis (AS) is the commonest valvular heart disease in western countries; its pathogenesis is mainly related to a degenerative process sharing many characteristics with atherosclerosis. At the present is not…
