Stellenwert von Computertomographie und Magnetresonanztomographie in der psychiatrischen Diagnostik

1997

This paper evaluates the role of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders according to the "International Classification of Diseases" (ICD-10). Indications for CT/MRI can be derived from ICD-10 for the identification or exclusion of defined cerebral lesions resp. for the etiology in organic disorders. Due to the lack of specific morphological findings, CT/MRI do not contribute to the classification of all other diagnoses. CT/ MRI can only exclude causal organic factors. However, ICD-10 provides only few guidelines for ruling out cerebral pathology (e.g. tumors in bulimic anorexia). Therefore, recommendations for routine CT/MRI-i…

Survival and developmental milestones among Pompe registry patients with classic infantile-onset Pompe disease with different timing of initiation of…

2014

s S62 strength in the arms (pulls self to stand: 72% vs 47%) and legs (bears weight on legs: 79% vs 66%). Results were similar when patients from Taiwan, who may have been identifi ed by newborn screening and not clinical diagnosis, were excluded. Earlier initiation of ERT in classic IOPD patients appears to improve the chances of survival and leads to better retention of muscle strength and improvement of symptoms in these young patients affected most severely by Pompe disease.

RECURRENT RETROPERITONEAL ABSCESS AFTER BILIARY TRACT SURGERY IN AN ELEDERLY PATIENT: A MINIMALLY INVASIVE NONSURGICAL APPROIACH AND ITS CONSEQUENCES…

2019

Abstract Introduction Hepatic abscess can be defined as an encapsulated collection of suppurative material within the liver parenchyma. Hepatic abscess can be distinguished as pyogenic, amebic, or fungal. Biliary tract disease remains the most common cause of hepatic abscess today, and the most common complications range from pleural effusion, empyema, and bronchohepatic fistula to subphrenic abscess and rupture into the peritoneal cavity, stomach, colon, vena cava, or kidney. A large abscess compressing the inferior vena cava and the hepatic veins may result in Budd-Chiari syndrome. In this report, we present a rare case of hepatic abscess with an unusual evolution that was treated with a …

Grundprobleme medizinischer Ethik*

1988

The discussion on ethical problems in reproductive medicine that has been going on for quite a decade, is of an exemplary nature; it is mainly focussed on extracorporeal fertilisation, prenatal diagnosis with a view to abortion, and post partum diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases. The fundamental problems of medical ethics in general come to the fore particularly clearly in this discussion. The following article deals with these fundamental problems, whereas a subsequent article will be concerned in greater detail with the three special disciplines I have just mentioned.

Clinical and microbiological diagnosis of oral candidiasis

2013

Introduction: Candidiasis or oral candidiasis is the most frequent mucocutaneous mycosis of the oral cavity. It is produced by the genus Candida, which is found in the oral cavity of 53% of the general population as a common commensal organism. One hundred and fifty species have been isolated in the oral cavity, and 80% of the isolates correspond to Candida albicans, which can colonize the oral cavity alone or in combination with other species. Transformation from commensal organism to pathogen depends on the intervention of different predisposing factors that modify the microenvironment of the oral cavity and favor the appearance of opportunistic infection. The present study offers a liter…

Post endodontic Aspergillosis in an immunocompetent individual

2015

Non-invasive aspergillosis in immunocompetent individuals subsequent to post endodontic treatment can involve the maxillary antrum. An early and accurate diagnosis will aid in prompt and effective treatment. A 35 year old female patient reported with a painful nasomaxillary swelling. Previous records revealed the failure of the endodontic treatment of maxillary left second premolar which was subsequently extracted. Root piece was accidently left behind which resulted in a painful nasomaxillary swelling. The extraction socket was curetted and tissue was sent for histopathological examination, which revealed abundant septate fungal hyphae with numerous spores characteristic of Aspergillus. Th…

Peripheral odontogenic keratocyst: Report of two new cases and review of the literature

2020

Peripheral odontogenic keratocyst (POKC) is a rare soft tissue entity showing the same histological characteristics of odontogenic keratocyst. Herein, we report two cases of POKC affecting the gingiva/alveolar mucosa. Case 1. A 43-year-old female was referred for evaluation of a painless well-defined nodular, sessile, non-tender swelling in the right maxillary buccal gingiva. No radiological alterations were observed. The patient was submitted to excisional biopsy and histological diagnosis was POKC. There were no signs of local recurrence after a 4-year follow-up. Case 2. A 63-year-old female was referred for evaluation of a painless well-defined nodular, sessile, yellowish swelling in the…
