Development of a Novel Method for Identification of Alaria alata Mesocercariae by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spe…
2021
Alaria (A.) alata mesocercariae (AM) have increasingly appeared as incidental findings during the mandatory inspection of wild boars for Trichinella in many European countries. An Alaria spp.-specific PCR is available for the identification of AM
Toward fast malaria detection by secondary speckle sensing microscopy
2012
Diagnosis of malaria must be rapid, accurate, simple to use, portable and low cost, as suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO). Despite recent efforts, the gold standard remains the light microscopy of a stained blood film. This method can detect low parasitemia and identify different species of Plasmodium. However, it is time consuming, it requires well trained microscopist and good instrumentation to minimize misinterpretation, thus the costs are considerable. Moreover, the equipment cannot be easily transported and installed. In this paper we propose a new technique named "secondary speckle sensing microscopy" ((SM)-M-3) based upon extraction of correlation based statistics of s…
Outlier detection to hierarchical and mixed effects models
2008
Hierarchical and mixed effects models are models where a varying number of coefficients may be random at different levels of the hierarchy. The purpose of outlier analysis for these models is to determine whether an outlying unit at higher level is entirely outlying, or outlying due to effect of one or a few aberrant lower level units. Most works on diagnostics for these complex models have focused on the mixed model rather than on the hierarchical models, obscuring some relevant aspects of the hierarchical model. In this paper we will present an approach to influence analysis and outlier detection for mixed and hierarchical model, focusing on the special structure of nested data that these…
Click chemistry-assisted bioconjugates for hapten immunodiagnostics
2020
Bioorthogonal reactions have revolutionized the way low molecular weight compounds are coupled to biomolecules. Organic chemistry, polymer science, and chemical biology are among the disciplines that are benefited the most from this breakthrough. Despite the reliability of the click chemistry concept for the efficient and chemoselective functionalization of biomacromolecules with haptens at preferred positions, the fact that azide–alkyne cycloaddition reactions originate new chemical moieties as part of the linker may have delayed their application in the immunodiagnostic field. Using the mycotoxin ochratoxin A as a model compound, we herein demonstrate for the first time that bioconjugates…
On the Secondary Discharge of an Atmospheric-Pressure Pulsed DBD in He with Impurities
2008
The secondary discharge was induced at the end of a slow-falling voltage flank, when a semisine monopolar pulse voltage excites the dielectric-barrier discharge. Formation and properties of the secondary discharge with respect to different dielectric materials such as glass, ceramic, and polyethylene theraphtalate were studied. The tunable diode laser absorption spectrometry (at 777.194 nm) was used to analyze the time-space distribution of the density of the atomic oxygen in metastable state (35S2 rarr 35P3) in addition to both discharge voltage and discharge current versus time. The secondary discharge is always formed, and its amplitude, as well as the amplitude of the main discharge, de…

Spatial and Spectral Distributions of the Hydrogen $\hbox{H}_{\alpha}$ Line in Dielectric-Barrier Discharges
2008
It is shown that the optical emission method, based on measured spatial and spectral distributions of the Halpha radiation, provides valuable information on physical conditions in the volume of dielectric-barrier discharges. In the case when the registration allows the determination of light polarization, the measured spectra may provide information about the distribution of the electric-field strength in a direction that is perpendicular to the surfaces limiting the discharge volume. Visualization of the experimental data of spatial distributions of the hydrogen Halpha line is presented.
Breath testing as a method for detecting lung cancer
2014
Early diagnosis of lung cancer is important due to high mortality in late stages of the disease. An ideal approach for population screening could be the breath analysis, due to its non-invasiveness, simplicity and cheapness. Using sensitive methods of analysis like gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in exhaled air of cancer patients were discovered some volatile organic compounds - possible candidates for cancer markers. However, these compounds were not specific for cancer cells. At the same time, integrative approaches used to analyze the exhaled breath have demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity of this method for lung cancer diagnosis. Such integrative approaches include detect…
Personalized cancer medicine: from molecular diagnostics to targeted therapy with natural products.
2010
Personalized cancer medicine aims to develop individualized treatment options adapted to factors relevant for the prognosis of each patient. Molecular biomarkers are required to predict the likelihood of an individual tumor's responsiveness or of toxicity in normal organs and to advise optimized treatments with improved efficacy at reduced side effects for each cancer patient. In the present review, we present a concept, which takes advantage of methods of molecular diagnostics to identify predictive markers at the DNA, mRNA, and protein levels. Markers with prognostic value concerning treatment response and patient survival can then be used as targets to develop optimized drugs. We focus o…
Portable two-channel PPG cardiovascular sensor device
2003
A portable sensor device for simultaneous detection and processing of skin-remitted optical signals from any two sites of the body has been developed and tested. The photoplethysmography (PPG) principle was applied to follow the dilatation and contraction of skin blood vessels during the cardiac cycle. The newly developed two-channel approach allows to estimate the vascular blood flow resistance by analysis of time shifts between the PPG pulses detected at different body sites. Potential of the sensor device for express-assessment of human cardio-vascular condition and for body fitness tests has been demonstrated.
