Effect of lactoferrin addition on the dialysability of iron from infant formulas
2003
A possible enhancing effect of lactoferrin (Lf) on iron absorption by breast-fed infants has been suggested, however the available results failed to confirm this hypothesis. Nevertheless, Lf could be useful in protecting the lipid fraction of infant formulas against oxidation. Concerning the possibility of adding Lf to infant formulas with this aim, we considered it necessary to evaluate the effect of this addition on iron dialysability, which was used as a parameter indicator of bioavailability. An in vitro dialysability method was applied to three types of infant formulas, with and without Lf added, respectively. In none of the analysed formulas did the added Lf have a negative effect on …
Adaptive treatment of anemia on hemodialysis patients: A reinforcement learning approach
2011
The aim of this work is to study the applicability of reinforcement learning methods to design adaptive treatment strategies that optimize, in the long-term, the dosage of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) in the management of anemia in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Adaptive treatment strategies are recently emerging as a new paradigm for the treatment and long-term management of the chronic disease. Reinforcement Learning (RL) can be useful to extract such strategies from clinical data, taking into account delayed effects and without requiring any mathematical model. In this work, we focus on the so-called Fitted Q Iteration algorithm, a RL approach that deals with the data very…
Experience in Spain with the first patients in home hemodialysis treated with low-flow dialysate monitors
2021
Hemoglobin Level Analysis in Hemodialysis Patients Treated With Erythropoiesis Stimulating Agents
2010
In this chapter authors try to develop an expert system with the help of neural network method like Organizing Maps (SOMs) for hemodialysis patient.  Neural network models play a very important role for data analysis of hemodialysis patients with end-stage renal disease.  There are two main goals: firstly, the knowledge extraction from a database using Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs); and secondly, to provide an accurate prediction of Hb levels next month.
Novel concepts on the recovery of by-products from alkaline pulping
2016
Innovative biorefinery concepts were developed for the separation and utilization of organic materials, especially aliphatic carboxylic acids, lignin, and extractives, which are formed as by-products during wood-based alkaline delignification processes. The partial recovery of sodium as NaOH and aliphatic carboxylic acids from hardwood soda-AQ black liquor was studied via electrodialysis. The lignin was partly (about 59 % of the initial lignin) precipitated from black liquor by carbonation (pH to about 8.5) followed by electrodialysis or H2SO4 (pH to about 2), with subsequent precipitation of more lignin and the liberation of aliphatic acids. The Na2SO4 formed was successfully separated fro…
A randomized multicenter trial on a lung ultrasound-guided treatment strategy in patients on chronic hemodialysis with high cardiovascular risk
2021
Lung congestion is a risk factor for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients on chronic hemodialysis, and its estimation by ultrasound may be useful to guide ultrafiltration and drug therapy in this population. In an international, multi-center randomized controlled trial (NCT02310061) we investigated whether a lung ultrasound-guided treatment strategy improved a composite end point (all-cause death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, decompensated heart failure) vs usual care in patients receiving chronic hemodialysis with high cardiovascular risk. Patient-Reported Outcomes (Depression and the Standard Form 36 Quality of Life Questionnaire, SF36) were assessed as secondary outcome…
Fractionated precipitation of acid macropolyanions by dialysis, a simple method for the estimation of DNA in complex biological samples.
1976
Abstract After efficient extraction by para-aminosalicylate, (hopping, grinding and eventual sonication, the macropolyanions are transformed into their cetyltrimethylammonium salts. These have differing solubilities, strongly depending on ionic strength. The cationic detergent-macropolyanionic salts are solubilized by high salt concentration. Salt is then dialysed out, rendering the polyanions highly insoluble in a sequential fashion. The insolubilized components are determined quantitatively by monitoring turbidity, which in case of DNA is strictly proportionate to its concentration. This relation is not affected by other components. This makes DNA determination possible even in crude aque…
Incidence of potential drug interactions in a transplant centre setting and relevance of electronic alerts for clinical practice support
2013
Background Adverse drug events may occur as a result of drug–drug interactions (DDIs). Information technology (IT) systems can be an important decision-making tool for healthcare workers to identify DDIs.Objective The aim of the study is to analyse drug prescriptions in our main hospital units, in order to measure the incidence and severity of potential DDIs. The utility of clinical decision-support systems (CDSSs) and computerised physician order entry (CPOE) in term of alerts adherence was also assessed. DDIs were assessed using a Micromedex healthcare series database. Methods The system, adopted by the hospital, generates alerts for prescriptions with negative interactions and thanks to a…
Brackish water off-grid desalination systems for developing countries
2017
The REvivED water project aims to contribute to overcoming the drinking water challenge through desalination technology. The goal is to produce safe and affordable drinking water with a significantly reduced energy consumption compared to the current state-of-the-art technology. The overall project comprises several systems and applications with twelve pilots in total, ranging from Electrodialysis (ED) small systems for brackish water desalination to larger scale hybrid (RED/ED-RO) systems for sea water desalination. Specific attention is devoted to develop energy efficient and robust brackish water desalination systems for application in developing countries. To reduce the energy consumpti…
