Microflow Technology in Polymer Synthesis
2012
Microflow technology, i.e., the use of microfluidic devices for continuous flow synthesis, represents a highly useful and increasingly popular method in organic chemistry. Recently, also an increasing number of polymer synthesis protocols attain benefit from this technique. In particular, the control of highly exothermic, fast polymerization reactions can be improved due to the excellent heat and mass transfer within the small dimensions of the microreactors. Continuous flow setups with different micromixer geometries and flow patterns are currently used for the preparation of a variety of macromolecular architectures by ionic and (controlled) radical polymerization techniques. This Perspec…
Die Hand des Musikers - Musikphysiologische und musikermedizinische Aspekte
2000
Musicians are particularly demanding hand patients. Increased expectancy towards the hand surgeon as well as principle aversion to any kind of operative treatment of the musician's hand impede the relationship between hand surgeon and patient. Knowledge and experience of the specific demands towards the musician's hand--including the background of basics in physiology of music making and instrumental techniques--facilitate history taking, examinations, diagnosing as well as the selection of therapy. Besides tendinitis and tendovaginitis, pathologies of the musician's hand are not more frequent compared to the entire population. Still several pathologies reach a significantly pronounced impo…
Biochemical composition of muscle extracellular matrix: the effect of loading
2000
Collagen plays an important role in skeletal muscle both during muscle differentiation and normal muscle growth, and also serves a role as a supportive structure. It is the most abundant protein of the extracellular matrix and of the 19 distinct collagen types, types I, III, IV and V are the dominating ones in skeletal muscle. Both collagen synthesis as well as degradation is influenced by either physical loading or immobilization in skeletal muscle, and recent methods have allowed for greater understanding of the posttranslational processing of collagen.
Exposure to radial extracorporeal shockwaves induces muscle regeneration after muscle injury in a surgical rat model
2019
The leading cause of training interruption in sport is a muscle injury, for which the standard treatment is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). To find alternative treatments, we investigated whether the radial extracorporeal shockwave application (rESWT) could stimulate muscle regeneration. A lesion with complete rupture (grade III muscle tear) was set in the musculus rectus femoris of 12-week-old Wistar rats, and the NSAID diclofenac, rESWT, or a combined therapy were applied on day 0, 3, and 5 directly following the surgery. Rats were euthanized at 2, 4, and 7 days after surgery and the area of muscle lesion was excised for histological and gene expression analysis to determin…
