Effects of A Dual-Task Intervention in Postural Control and Cognitive Performance in Adolescents.

The aim was to assess dual- versus single-task training for motor performance and cognitive performance in adolescents. Two experiments were performed. In the first, 30 adolescents were randomized to three groups to determine the effect of dual-task difficulty on postural control: α-scaling and root mean square (RMS). In the second, 20 adolescents were randomized to two groups to determine the effect of dual-task practice to improve working memory. RMS in the post-test was lower than the pre-test in both dual-task groups, while α-scaling was lower in post-test than pre-test only in the high-difficulty dual-task group. Effect of Concurrent Visual Feedback Frequency on Postural Control Learning in Adolescents.

The purpose was to find better augmented visual feedback frequency (100% or 67%) for learning a balance task in adolescents. Thirty subjects were divided randomly into a control group, and 100% and 67% feedback groups. The three groups performed pretest (3 trials), practice (12 trials), posttest (3 trials) and retention (3 trials, 24 hours later). The reduced feedback group showed lower RMS in the posttest than in the pretest (p = 0.04). The control and reduced feedback groups showed significant lower median frequency in the posttest than in the pretest (p < 0.05). Kuntscher nailing of femoral shaft fractures in children and adolescents.

We have reviewed 29 cases of very unstable diaphyseal fractures of the femur in children and adolescents treated by Kuntscher nailing. Follow up was for at least 5 years, and in most cases until after the end of growth. There were no post-operative complications, and the mean overgrowth of the femur was 7.06 mm. There was growth disturbance of the proximal femur in one case, but this did not interfere with function. We believe that Kuntscher nailing is indicated in children and adolescents with unstable high velocity fractures of the femoral shaft.

Relationship between the practice of physical activity and quality of movement in adolescents: a screening tool using self-organizing maps.

The aim of this study was to determine whether the most physically active adolescents have better lower limb control.31 high school students (12 males and 19 females) participated in this study. The Anterior Knee Pain Scale was used to find any cases of knee pain. Only subjects with high scores were selected, to exclude those with knee pain or lower limb injuries. Cardiorespiratory performance and physical activity in normal weight and overweight Finnish adolescents from 2003 to 2010

We investigated changes in cardiorespiratory performance, BMI and leisure-time physical activity among Finnish adolescents from 2003 to 2010. In addition, we compared cardiorespiratory performance levels between normal weight and overweight adolescents, grouped according to their physical activity. Participants were a national representative samples of 15-16-year-old adolescents in their final (ninth) year of comprehensive school in 2003 (n = 2258) and in 2010 (n = 1301). Clinical application of back surface topography by means of structured light in the screening of idiopathic scoliosis

We present the results of the clinical validity in the screening of idiopathic scoliosis with a nonharming method of back surface topography by means of structured light projection. A total of 155 patients were evaluated (mean age 13.3 years). They were divided into two groups: pathologic patients (scoliosis) and nonpathologic patients (control and asymmetries). An analytical case-control study was carried out. Our topographic method obtained 92% sensitivity and 74% specificity as a screening test in identifying patients with scoliosis (P=0.05). Combined creatine and sodium bicarbonate supplementation enhances interval swimming.

This study examined the effect of simultaneous supplementation of creatine and sodium bicarbonate on consecutive maximal swims. Sixteen competitive male and female swimmers completed, in a randomized order, 2 different treatments (placebo and a combination of creatine and sodium bicarbonate) with 30 days of washout period between treatments in a double-blind crossover procedure. Gait asymmetry in patients with limb length discrepancy.

Foot loading patterns and neuromuscular function of both limbs during walking were investigated on 25 patients with limb length discrepancy. Plantar pressures and 2-D ground reaction forces were recorded simultaneously with electromyographic activities at two different walking speeds. Bilateral comparison indicated that moderate limb length discrepancies resulted in asymmetrical gait patterns. The duration of the stance phase was reduced in the short limb in both walking speeds.
