Detecting Ankle Instability With an Instrumented Ankle Arthrometer: An Experimental Study.
2019
A new instrumented device was developed to quantify ankle joint stability during an anterior talar drawer test. The aim of the present study was to validate this device comparing bone kinematics with arthrometer measurement outcomes. An anterior talar drawer test was performed with 14 cadaver legs using a custom instrumented ankle arthrometer. Using clusters of bone-pin markers, the relative three-dimensional movement of calcaneus, talus, and fibula was simultaneously measured. Anterior drawer test was applied on the intact foot and after sequentially sectioning the anterior talofibular ligament, the calcaneofibular ligament, and the posterior talofibular ligament. Cutting the anterior talo…

Effects of short inter-repetition rest periods on power output losses during the half squat exercise
2016
BACKGROUND: Cluster training is being increasingly used to develop muscular power. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of short inter-repetition rest (IRR) periods on the capacity to maintain maximal levels of power output. METHODS:In afirst session, 16 active-duty soldiers performed a progressive loading test toestablish the load linked tomaximal power (optimal load, OL), and the half squat 1-repetition maximum. In Session 2, six individual sets of repetitions performed to failure (or a maximum of 20 repetitions) were conducted using the loads OL, low (LL, 15% below OL), and high (HL, 15% above OL) as quickly as possible. For each load, participants performed one set without rest between r…
Summary and recommendations of the OARSI FDA osteoarthritis Assessment of Structural Change Working Group
2011
Import JabRef | WosArea Orthopedics; Rheumatology; International audience; Objective: The Osteoarthritis Research Society International initiated a number of working groups to address a call from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on updating draft guidance on conduct of osteoarthritis (OA) clinical trials. The development of disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs (DMOADs) remains challenging. The Assessment of Structural Change (ASC) Working Group aimed to provide a state-of-the-art critical update on imaging tools for OA clinical trials. Methods: The Group focussed on the performance metrics of conventional radiographs (CR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), performing systemati…
The Development of the Brief Eating Disorder in Athletes Questionnaire
2014
MARTINSEN, M., I. HOLME, A. M. PENSGAARD, M. K. TORSTVEIT, and J. SUNDGOT-BORGEN. The Development of the Brief Eating Disorder in Athletes Questionnaire. Med. Sci. Sports Exerc., Vol. 46, No. 8, pp. 1666–1675, 2014. Purpose: The objective of this study is to design and validate a brief questionnaire able to discriminate between female elite athletes with and without an eating disorder (ED). Methods: In phase I, 221 (89.5%) adolescent athletes participated in a screening including the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI2) and questions related to ED. All athletes reporting symptoms associated with ED (n = 96, 94.1%) and a random sample without symptoms (n = 88, 86.3%) attended the ED Examinatio…
Comparative evaluation of three semi-quantitative radiographic grading techniques for knee osteoarthritis in terms of validity and reproducibility in…
2008
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work was to compare the measurement properties of three categorical X-ray scoring methods of knee osteoarthritis (OA), both on semiflexed and extended views. METHODS: In data obtained from trials and cohorts, X-rays were graded using Kellgren and Lawrence (KL), the OA Research Society International (OARSI) joint space narrowing score, and measurement of joint space width (JSW). JSW was analyzed as a categorical variable. Construct validity was assessed through logistic regression between X-ray stages and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities OA Index. Inter-observer reliability was assessed in 50 subjects for extended views by weighted kappa. Intra-obser…
Objectively recorded physical activity in early pregnancy: A multiethnic population-based study
2012
This study aimed to compare objectively recorded physical activity (PA) levels and walking steps among pregnant women. Cross-sectional data from a multiethnic cohort (n = 823) of pregnant women consisting of 44% from Western countries, 24% from South Asia, 14% from Middle East, and 18% from other countries. PA and steps were recorded by the activity monitor SenseWear™ Pro3 Armband. A total of 678 women were included in the analysis. Western women walked significantly more steps and had higher moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) levels compared with South Asian women per weekday and weekend day. Interaction terms (P = 0.008) between ethnicity (Western vs South Asian) and …
Objectively recorded physical activity and the association with gestational diabetes
2014
The aim of this population-based study was to assess the association between objectively recorded physical activity (PA) in early gestation and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) identified at 28 weeks of gestation in a multi-ethnic cohort of healthy pregnant women in Oslo, Norway. In total, 759 women were included. In early gestation (<20 weeks), light-, moderate-, and vigorous-intensity PA and number of steps were objectively recorded (SenseWear™ Armband Pro3), and self-reported PA, demographics, and anthropometrics were collected. The 75-g oral glucose tolerance test was performed at 28 weeks of gestation. Women with GDM had fewer objectively recorded steps (mean 7964 steps/day vs 8879 …
Presurgical Preparation of Infants With Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate: The SAC-PP-MR Innovative Technique
2018
In this article, we demonstrate an effective, cheap, and fast way to shape the nasal alar cartilage in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. This technique straightens the vomer and brings the philtrum, columella, premaxilla, and the maxillary frenum to the midsagittal plane, while the alveolar ridges are shaped and positioned. This reduces the lip and palatal cleft to zero even in a 4-week period.
Adolescents' postural control learning according to the frequency of knowledge of process
2019
Feedback is one of the most influential factors for motor skills learning. Physical Education teachers commonly use verbal cues to provide knowledge of process (KP) when teaching motor skills, but the ideal presentation frequency for KP in adolescents is unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of the frequency of KP (i.e., 100%, 67%, 0%) on dynamic balance. Thirty adolescents, age 14–15 years, participated in the study. Performance on a stabilometer platform was used to assess dynamic balance. Participants received feedback after each trial (100%), in two out of three trials (67%), or no feedback during 12 30-s trials of practice. Adolescents who received feedback (6…
