Different hormonal response to continuous and intermittent exercise in middle-distance and marathon runners
2008
In order to study the effects of different athletic backgrounds on exercise-induced hormonal responses, serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and cortisol concentrations were measured before and after intensive continuous and intermittent running in well-trained middle-distance runners (MID) and marathon runners (MAR). They performed two 40-min exercises on a treadmill: a continuous run at an intensity of 80% [tempo run (TR)] and an intermittent run (IR) at an intensity of 100% of the velocity associated with VO(2max). The testosterone response to IR and the cortisol response to TR was higher (P<0.05) in MID compared with MAR. The testosterone response to IR …
Emancipation or simulation? The pedagogy of ignorance and action research in PETE

Education is increasingly a bureaucratized, standardized and regulated service in which everything is decided by the ‘experts’. There is an abandonment of the concept of education centred on the su...
European Week of Sport: innovative initiative of European Commission that inspires children to be active
2019
BAC KGROU ND: Estimates indicate that more than one third of European adults are inactive, despite the known benefits of physical activity. In 2015 the European Commission launched the European Week of Sport (EWoS), to encourage people to engage in sport and physical activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate if participation in the EWoS could motivate children to participate in physical activity in future. METHOD S: A total of 10,892 children (aged 6-14), from 6 EU cities (Palermo, Italy; Ankara, Turkey; Lousada, Portugal; Gardabaer, Iceland; Rijeka, Croatia; Albacete, Spain), were enrolled in sport activities (running sport event, extra hours of physical activity, seminars on physica…

Microfibers and Nanoparticles with Controlled Dimensions of a Hyaluronic Acid Derivative
2017
Microfluidics is defined as the technology that deals with the precise control and manipulation of small quantities of fluids constrained in micro-channels of small cross-sectional dimensions [1]. Microfluidics has recently emerged as a very promising route for the production of polymeric fibers at the micro and nanoscale, providing a fine control over fiber shape, size, chemical anisotropy and biological activity [2]. Furthermore, the ability to manipulate nanoliter volumes of liquid and to control mixing and reaction precisely, opens up the possibility of creating smart targeted drug delivery systems as nanoparticles, especially with uniform and narrow size distribution [3]. This work des…

Does the 5-strand-graft have superior biomechanical behaviour than 4-strand-graft during acl reconstruction?
2019
Purpose. This study aimed to compare the biomechanical proprieties of 4 and 5-strand- grafts. Methods. For the present study, fresh-frozen bovine common digital extensor tendons were used. Tendon grafts were prepared and sized to have a length of almost 27 cm and a cylinder 4 strand diameter of 8 mm. In half of all samples (Group A, n=12,), the graft was formed by 2 bundles duplicated around a metallic rod creating a 4-strand-tendon construct. In the other half of samples (Group B, n= 12,) 5-strand-tendon construct was created duplicating a single tendon around the rod, and tripling the other one. The grafts were preconditioned at 50 N for 10 min, followed by 1,000 cyclic loading between 50…
European fitness landscape for children and adolescents: updated reference values, fitness maps and country rankings based on nearly 8 million test r…
2023
Objectives (1) To develop reference values for health-related fitness in European children and adolescents aged 6–18 years that are the foundation for the web-based, open-access and multilanguage fitness platform (FitBack); (2) to provide comparisons across European countries. Methods This study builds on a previous large fitness reference study in European youth by (1) widening the age demographic, (2) identifying the most recent and representative country-level data and (3) including national data from existing fitness surveillance and monitoring systems. We used the Assessing Levels of PHysical Activity and fitness at population level (ALPHA) test battery as it comprises tests with the h…
How Does the Amount of a Physical Education Intervention Affect Gross Motor Coordination in Early Childhood?
2022
Little is known about the dose–response of physical education interventions on motor coordination in preschoolers. Our aim was to investigate whether the development of motor skills changed depending on different amounts of a physical education program (PEP) in children aged 3–5 years. One hundred forty-five children were recruited from kindergartens and randomly divided into a control group (CG, n = 28), which did not perform any PEP, and two intervention groups, which performed 4 h/week (I1, n = 78) and 10 h/week (I2, n = 39) of a PEP for 16 weeks. Each lesson was set in the form of a programmed game in order to produce fun, thus increasing enthusiasm for participation. Before and after t…
The effect of time-of-day and sleep deprivation on postural control: A systematic review.
2022
Background: Postural control (PC) can be affected by circadian rhythm and sleep deprivation, whereby it has been reported the result of PC measurement in clinical and experimental situations can be influenced by both factors. It has been suggested sleepiness can result in deficiency in PC, which in turn can lead to occupational accidents and subsequent injuries. This is while no study critically reviews or summarizes findings surrounding this topic in the literature. Research question: Is there any significant effect of sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm on PC variables among healthy individuals? Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase were used to detect relevant studies. O…
