Aiming routines and their electrocortical concomitants among competitive rifle shooters

2000

The present study focused on an examination of competitive shooters' aiming process during a rifle shooting task. The barrel movements of the rifle, as detected by a laser system during the last 1000-ms time period preceding the triggering, were recorded from six elite and six pre-elite shooters. Electrocortical slow potentials (SPs) from frontal (Fz), centro-lateral (C3, C4), and occipital (Oz) brain areas were recorded to get an additional insight into the underlying covert processing. The results suggested that the elite shooters did not pull the trigger until they reached a sustained rifle position. In the pre-elite shooters the rifle appeared to be in a less stable position, and their …

Cambios en la representación social de la educación física en la formación inicial del profesorado (Changes in the social representation of physical …

2018

Sponsorship in the Finnish sports culture

2009

AbstractThe theoretical assumptions explored with this paper are based on previous sociological studies concerning change in the field of sports. According to previous studies, international top-level sport is characterized by professionalism and a dissociation from the voluntary organizational field of sport. Top-level sports have become professional activities in internationally significant sports. In contrast to this, children’s and youth sports are still based on voluntary participation in Finland. The links between sports and economy have become even stronger since sport has become more professional, especially where sponsorship in toplevel sports has increased. However, sponsorship is…

Beyond Health and Happiness: An Exploratory Study Into the Relationship Between Craftsmanship and Meaningfulness of Sport

2021

Meaning in movement is an enduring topic in sport social sciences, but few studies have explored how sport is meaningful and for whom. The authors examined the relationships between demographic variables, meaningfulness of sport, and craftsmanship. Athletes (N = 258, 61.6% male, age ≥18) from the United Kingdom completed a demographic questionnaire, the Work and Meaning Inventory modified for sport, and the Craftsmanship Scale. Older age and individual sport significantly correlated with higher craftsmanship. Craftsmanship and religion were two independent predictors of meaningfulness, but emphasized somewhat different meaning dimensions. Meaningfulness in sport seems to be related to how a…

National orientation, universal outlook – the symbolic capital of FC Barcelona in the global era

2008

AbstractFrom its beginnings, FC Barcelona has been a sports entity in which an important nationalist orientation has coincided with a culture of integration and global openness. The first characteristic was forged from the second decade of the 20th century, when the club became a symbol of Catalonia. The second could be detected throughout the 20th century, both in the foreign origins of its founders and in the majority of its star players, as well as in the inter-classism and universality that characterizes its followers. This article examines to what extent FC Barcelona can continue to be seen nowadays as an institution that articulates the local and the global in Catalan society.

The effects of immobilization on the quality of Achilles tendon in rats

2007

Immobilization of an Achilles tendon in a shortened position for 1 and 3 weeks did not change pyridinoline and mature collagen concentrations. Although a significant decrease in the biosynthesis of collagen was observed simultaneously in the soleus muscle of the same hindlimb, these results suggest that the stability of collagen provided by the nonreducible cross-link, pyridinoline, is not altered during this type of immobilization. The significance of stable cross-links for the known decrease in tensile strength during immobilization remains open.

Decreased motor unit firing rate and force control in older men

2006

Introduction Ageing is related to muscle atrophy that leads to decreases in muscle force. The largest changes are found in fast muscle fibres and fast force production, reducing the capability to recover from sudden balance disturbances. Also ageing-related decrease in force control has been found, as indicated by an increase in force fluctuations and motor unit (MU) firing variability (Galganski et al. 1993). Possibly due to differences in measurement protocols and muscles, the results concerning the effects of ageing on motor unit firing rate are, however, somewhat contradictory (for review, see Roos et al. 1997). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the age-related changes…

Age dependency of neuromuscular function and dynamic balance control

2010

Abstract The purpose of the present study was to examine whether static and dynamic balance control are related to neuromuscular function and ageing. For this purpose, we constructed a new dynamic balance measurement system that simulates natural falling. Ten young (age 21–31 years) and 20 elderly (age 60–70 years) men participated in the experiment. Maximal isometric torque (MVC) and activation level were measured from the quadriceps and plantar flexor muscles. The H-reflex, V-wave, and maximal M-wave were measured from the soleus muscle. In dynamic balance control, anterior-posterior centre-of-pressure swaying was 74±8.1 mm in the young men and 91.5±19.4 mm in the elderly men (P<0.05), wh…

Polymer-Functionalised Nanograins of Mg-Doped Amorphous Calcium Carbonate via a Flow-Chemistry Approach

2019

Calcareous biominerals typically feature a hybrid nanogranular structure consisting of calcium carbonate nanograins coated with organic matrices. This nanogranular organisation has a beneficial effect on the functionality of these bioceramics. In this feasibility study, we successfully employed a flow-chemistry approach to precipitate Mg-doped amorphous calcium carbonate particles functionalized by negatively charged polyelectrolytes&mdash

A scoping review on the use of speech-to-text technology for adolescents with learning difficulties in secondary education

2022

To identify and describe the aims, methodological approaches, and major findings of studies on the use of STT among secondary pupils (age 12-18) with learning difficulties published from January 2000 to April 2022.This scoping review includes empirical studies published in peer-reviewed journals and grey literature between January 2000 and April 2022. Searches were conducted in April 2022 in three databases: ERIC, PsycINFO and Scopus. In addition, related reviews were manually screened for relevant papers.Eight peer-revied studies and five publications of grey literature were found to meet the inclusion criteria; two studies employed experimental designs, four employed quasi-experimental de…
