Genetic effects in common on maximal walking speed and muscle performance in older women

2007

The purpose was to examine whether maximal walking speed, maximal isometric knee extensor strength, and leg extensor power share genetic or environmental effects in common. The data was collected from 103 monozygotic and 114 dizygotic female twin pairs aged 63–76 years. Maximal walking speed over 10 m was measured in the laboratory corridor using photocells for timing. Isometric knee extensor strength and leg extensor power were measured using an adjustable dynamometer. The genetic models showed that strength, power, and walking speed had a genetic effect in common which accounted for 52% of the variance in strength, 36% in power, and 34% in walking speed. Strength and power had a non-share…

FokI Polymorphism of the Vitamin D Receptor Gene Correlates with Parameters of Bone Mass and Turnover in a Female Population of the Italian Island of…

2005

One of the most promising genetic approaches to dissecting a multifactorial disease is represented by genetically isolated population studies. We studied a genetic marker in a cohort of women living on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, a geographically isolated population. Lampedusa, located between the African coast and Sicily, consists of a young genetic isolate (<20 generations) with an exponential growth in the last generations. We analyzed the association between the FokI vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphism, previously proposed as a predictor of bone mass, with parameters of bone mass and turnover in a cohort of pre- and postmenopausal women living on Lampedusa. In 424 wome…

Trajectories of motor coordination in 4–7-years-old children: A latent growth curve analysis

2014

Introduction For being able to take part in physical activities typical to the given age, children need proficiency in several motor tasks. Gross motor coordination (MC) is a basis for executing motor tasks and for learning new movement patterns. This study aimed to identify different MC trajectories in children aged 4–7-years-old. Methods Motor coordination of children ( n = 94, mean age 6.1 ± 1.3 years at baseline) was measured at 0, 6 and 12 months by KTK-test battery [1] . To identify different MC trajectories, developmental trend of the mean score of KTK was analyzed by using a latent growth curve and growth mixture analysis. Results In general, MC developed significantly over the yea…

Epidemiology of Injuries in First Division Spanish Women’s Soccer Players

2021

The epidemiology of injuries in female soccer has been studied extensively in several national leagues. Even so, data on the first division Spanish league are limited. The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiology of the first division of the Spanish Women’s Soccer League and to analyze data in relation to game position, circumstance, or the moment of injury. Fifteen teams and 123 players participated in the study. Players’ characteristics and their injuries (location, type, diagnosis, circumstance, and moment) were collected. Injuries were described by their frequencies (number and percentage) and incidence rates (IR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Lower limb injuries …

Stress, anxiety and depression in heart disease patients: A major challenge for cardiac rehabilitation

2016

International audience; Cardiovascular events and emotional disorders share a common epidemiology, thus suggesting fundamental pathways linking these different diseases. Growing evidence in the literature highlights the influence of psychological determinants in somatic diseases. A patient's socio-economic aspects, personality traits, health behavior and even biological pathways may contribute to the course of cardiovascular disease. Cardiac events often occur suddenly and the episode can be traumatic for people not prepared for such an event. In this review of the literature, the authors tackle the question of psychobiological mechanisms of stress, in a pathophysiological approach to funda…

Forefoot strikers exhibit lower running-induced knee loading than rearfoot strikers.

2013

AB Purpose: Knee pain and Achilles tendinopathies are the most common complaints among runners. The differences in the running mechanics may play an important role in the pathogenesis of lower limb overuse injuries. However, the effect of a runner's foot strike pattern on the ankle and especially on the knee loading is poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to examine whether runners using a forefoot strike pattern exhibit a different lower limb loading profile than runners who use rearfoot strike pattern. Methods: Nineteen female athletes with a natural forefoot strike (FFS) pattern and pair-matched women with rearfoot strike (RFS) pattern (n = 19) underwent 3-D running analysis …

Intra- and inter-foot coordination in quiet standing: footwear and posture effects.

2012

Intra-foot coordination between center of pressure (COP) of the ball and heel of the foot in single leg standing and inter-foot coordination of the right and left foot during bipedal stance was examined as a function of postural stance (two legs, one leg, and toe postures), footwear (barefoot, different area based high heel shoes) and postural training (ballet group and regular exercising group). Young adult females performed three 20s trials in each postural condition. In general, the traditional variability measures of COPnet motion increased under the less stable postural support conditions and ballet dancers had better balance in single leg standing. Regularity analysis revealed a negat…

Effectiveness of low-energy extracorporal shock waves for chronic plantar fasciitis

1996

Summary Over a period of 4 years we performed a prospective randomized trial on 100 patients in order to compare the effects of low-energy extracorporal shock-wave therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of painful heel (chronic plantar fasciitis). Patients in group I were treated three times at weekly intervals with 1000 impulses of 0.08 mJ/mm 2 given around the heel spur. Group II received treatment three times with 10 impulses of the same energy density at weekly intervals. Follow-up examinations were done at 12 and 52 weeks, respectively. The main outcomes assessed were reduction in severity of pressure pain, period of pain-free walking, and patient satisfaction. At 12 weeks, 16 of 50 patients …

Estrogen receptor alpha polymorphism modifies the association between childhood exercise and bone mass: follow-up study.

2007

This follow-up study confirms our previous findings that the ER-α PvuII polymorphism (Pp) modulates the association between exercise and bone mass. The differences in bone properties of girls with consistently low physical activity (LLPA) and consistently high physical activity (HHPA) were evident only in those bearing the heterozygote ER-α genotype (Pp). In particular, areal bone mineral density of the total femur, bone mineral content and areal bone mineral density of the femoral neck, and bone mineral content and cortical thickness of the tibia shaft were significantly (p < .05) lower in the Pp girls with LLPA than in their HHPA counterparts. These findings might partly explain the ge…
