Cabbage and fermented vegetables: from death rate heterogeneity in countries to candidates for mitigation strategies of severe COVID-19

International audience; Large differences in COVID-19 death rates exist between countries and between regions of the same country. Some very low death rate countries such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, or the Balkans have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods. Although biases exist when examining ecological studies, fermented vegetables or cabbage have been associated with low death rates in European countries. SARS-CoV-2 binds to its receptor, the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Partial substitution of fish meal with vegetable protein sources in a diet for sea bass: effects on lipogenesis

Three isoproteic (49.4%) and isolipidic (17.0%) diets were prepared: A control diet FM, in which protein was derived from fish meal and two experimental diets in which 70% of the fish meal protein was substituted with wheat gluten meal (WGM) or wheat gluten meal plus soybean meal (WGMsb), respectively. The essential limiting amino acids were added to satisfy the requirements of the species (Tibaldi et al., 1996). Bioaccessibility of calcium, iron and zinc from three legume samples

Legumes can be a source of mineral elements but also of antinutritional factors which can affect their absorption. An in vitro method including gastrointestinal digestion was used to estimate mineral bioavailability. Soluble (bioaccessible) and insoluble calcium, iron and zinc from white beans, chickpeas and lentils were determined after gastrointestinal digestion. The influence of the original sample weight on the soluble mineral fraction was also estimated. The results obtained show that white beans are the legumes with the highest bioaccessible calcium and iron contents. Partially competitive inhibition of intestinal baclofen absorption by beta-alanine, a nonessential dietary aminoacid.

In situ intestinal absorption of baclofen in the rat in the presence of beta-alanine has been investigated. Through the perfusion of 0.50 mM baclofen solutions containing variable concentrations of the aminoacid (from 5 to 100 mM), a partially competitive inhibition of baclofen absorption was characterized: absorption rate pseudoconstants of the spasmolytic drug decrease as beta-alanine concentration increases, until a limiting value is obtained (36.8 per cent of that found for baclofen alone). This study was conducted to compare in vivo the acute effects of heated (+) and (-) gossypol cottonseed flours with those of soybean flour on lipid digestion and absorption in growing rats. Rats were fed by gastric intubation mixed [ 3 H]-oleic acid and [ 14 C]-triolein with heated flours or without flour (control). Lipid digestion and absorption were determined for 6 h after meal intubation. Both radioactivities recovered in gastrointestinal tract were significantly higher in rats fed (+) gossypol cottonseed flour than in all other groups. Fluorimetric determination of amphetamine in urine by flow injection with on-line liquid–liquid extraction

Abstract Determination of amphetamine in urine was performed by batch and flow injection methodologies. The suitable experimental conditions for fluorimetric measurements were established. The liquid–liquid extraction was carried out at pH 13 using diethyl ether as extracting reagent. The measurement conditions were 260 nm and 277 nm for excitation and emission wavelengths, respectively. The method requires standard addition calibration and Youden blank correction. The influence of the main metabolites of amphetamine and metamphetamine were studied. The accuracy and precision of the proposed method was tested and the method is adapted to the flow injection procedure with on-line extraction.
