Association between the multidimensional prognostic index and mortality during 15 Years of Follow-up in the InCHIANTI Study
2020
Abstract Background Multidimensional Prognostic Index (MPI) is recognized as a prognostic tool in hospitalized patients, but data on the value of MPI in community-dwelling older persons are limited. Using data from a representative cohort of community-dwelling persons, we tested the hypothesis that MPI explains mortality during 15 years of follow-up. Methods A standardized comprehensive geriatric assessment was used to calculate the MPI and to categorize participants in low-, moderate-, and high-risk classes. The results were reported as hazard ratios (HRs) and the accuracy was evaluated with the area under the curve (AUC), with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and the C-index. We also report…
Cardiac Micro–Computed Tomography Imaging of the Aging Coronary Vasculature
2012
Background— Alterations at the level of the coronary circulation with aging may play an important role in the evolution of age-associated changes in left ventricular (LV) fibrosis and function. However these age-associated changes in the coronary vasculature remain poorly defined primarily due to the lack of high resolution imaging technologies. The current study was designed to utilize cardiac micro–computed tomography (micro-CT) technology as a novel imaging strategy, to define the 3-dimensional coronary circulation in the young and aged heart and its relationship to LV fibrosis and function. Methods and Results— Young (2 months old; n=10) and aged (20 months old; n=10) Fischer rats unde…

Associations between personality, sports participation and athletic success. A comparison of Big Five in sporting and non-sporting adults
2018
Abstract The present study investigates whether the Big Five personality traits are different among diverse sports populations. A sample of 881 male athletes and non-athletes completed a self-report questionnaire measuring their personality traits. The Exploratory Structure Equation Modeling (ESEM) approach is adopted to test measurement invariance and mean differences among groups. The results indicate that athletes who had experienced the most success in their sport scored higher than non-athletes in each personality dimension of the Big Five, with the exception of openness, while less successful athletes scored higher than non-athletes only in extraversion and agreeableness. The more suc…
Earth system data cubes unravel global multivariate dynamics
2020
Understanding Earth system dynamics in light of ongoing human intervention and dependency remains a major scientific challenge. The unprecedented availability of data streams describing different facets of the Earth now offers fundamentally new avenues to address this quest. However, several practical hurdles, especially the lack of data interoperability, limit the joint potential of these data streams. Today, many initiatives within and beyond the Earth system sciences are exploring new approaches to overcome these hurdles and meet the growing interdisciplinary need for data-intensive research; using data cubes is one promising avenue. Here, we introduce the concept of Earth system data cu…
A new approach to analyzing groundwater trough its manifestations in the landscapes and toponymy: "Subtle" Hydrogeology
2019
The first sorbicillinoid alkaloids, the antileukemic sorbicillactones A and B, from a sponge-derived Penicillium chrysogenum strain
2005
The saltwater culture of a Penicillium chrysogenum strain isolated from the Mediterranean sponge Ircinia fasciculata yielded three new sorbicillin-derived compounds (1-3), whose structures were elucidated mainly by 2D NMR and mass spectrometry. Among them, sorbicillactones A (1) and B (2) are the first sorbicillinoid natural products that contain nitrogen. Compound 1 is anti-HIV active and it exhibits a strong cytotoxic activity against L5178y leukemic cells, combined with a relatively low toxicity to cervical carcinoma HeLa S3 cells and pheochromocytoma PC 12 cells. The absolute configurations of I and 2 were elucidated by quantum chemical calculation of circular dichroism (CD) spectra. An…
Rank two aCM bundles on the del Pezzo fourfold of degree 6 and its general hyperplane section
2018
International audience; In the present paper we completely classify locally free sheaves of rank 2 with vanishing intermediate cohomology modules on the image of the Segre embedding $\mathbb{P}^2$ x $\mathbb{P}^2 \subseteq \mathbb{P}^8$ and its general hyperplane sections.Such a classification extends similar already known results regarding del Pezzo varieties with Picard numbers 1 and 3 and dimension at least 3.
Group graded algebras and almost polynomial growth
2011
Let F be a field of characteristic 0, G a finite abelian group and A a G-graded algebra. We prove that A generates a variety of G-graded algebras of almost polynomial growth if and only if A has the same graded identities as one of the following algebras: (1) FCp, the group algebra of a cyclic group of order p, where p is a prime number and p||G|; (2) UT2G(F), the algebra of 2×2 upper triangular matrices over F endowed with an elementary G-grading; (3) E, the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra with trivial G-grading; (4) in case 2||G|, EZ2, the Grassmann algebra with canonical Z2-grading.
Varieties with at most cubic growth
2019
Abstract Let V be a variety of non necessarily associative algebras over a field of characteristic zero. The growth of V is determined by the asymptotic behavior of the sequence of codimensions c n ( V ) , n = 1 , 2 , … , and here we study varieties of polynomial growth. We classify all possible growth of varieties V of algebras satisfying the identity x ( y z ) ≡ 0 such that c n ( V ) C n α , with 1 ≤ α 3 , for some constant C. We prove that if 1 ≤ α 2 then c n ( V ) ≤ C 1 n , and if 2 ≤ α 3 , then c n ( V ) ≤ C 2 n 2 , for some constants C 1 , C 2 .
