Assessing, measuring and modelling erosion in calanchi areas: A review

2016

Calanchi are erosion landforms characterised by a heavily dissected terrain with steep, unvegetated slopes and channels with a dendritic pattern, which rapidly incise and extend headwards. Recent literature focusing on badland systems highlights their similarity with other larger fluvial landforms, stating that these behave as a full size laboratory, due to their rapid development in space and time and to the diversity of geomorphic processes involved. In this paper, a brief review of the most important results on badland research is firstly presented. Then, the morphometric similarity between calanchi and other erosion landforms is discussed. Finally, models quantitatively relating the vol…

Overland flow hydrodynamic characteristics in rough beds at low Reynolds numbers

2022

This paper considers overland flow resistance at low Reynolds numbers through analysis of experimental runs carried out using water only and water/glycerol mixtures. We first examined the power relationship between the Darcy–Weisbach friction factor f and the Reynolds number Re to obtain the values of the K coefficient and b exponent. These results confirmed the applicability of the values of b suggested in literature, while K required a specific calibration for laminar open-channel flows. The analysis revealed that transition from a laminar to turbulent flow regime for water only flows occurred at a threshold value of Re equal to 500 as described historically. The estimate of f by the powe…

Application of the 3-D boundary element method to delaminated composite structures

2013

A three-dimensional boundary element model for anisotropic solids is presented to study the fracture mechanics behavior of delaminated composite structures. The multi-domain technique is implemented to model the layered configurations and the cracks occurring at bi-material interface. The Modified Crack Closure Integral technique is implemented to characterize the fracture mechanics behavior of delaminations in terms of the total energy release rate and mode mix phase angles. Validating analyses, performed on different delaminated configurations, have shown the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Moreover, some original results are presented to investigate the effects of the stacking se…

Memristors in Nonlinear Network : Application to Information (Signal and Image) Processing

2021

Memristor is a two-terminal nonlinear dynamic electronic device. Typically, it is a passive nano-device whose conductivity is controlled by the flux, time-integral of the voltage across its terminals, or by the charge, time-integral of the current flowing through it, and it presents interesting features for versatile applications. This thesis considers memristor use as a neighborhood connection for 2D cellular nonlinear or neural network (CNN), essentially for information (image and signal) processing and electronic prosthesis. We develop a model of the memristor based 2D cellular nonlinear networks CNNs compatible to image applications by incorporating memristor in the adjacent neighborhoo…

Reactivity of anticancer metallodrugs with serum proteins: New insights from size exclusion chromatography-ICP-MS and ESI-MS

2010

International audience; A method based on the coupling of high resolution size-exclusion liquid chromatography using a polymer stationary phase with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was developed to study the interactions of two metallodrugs - cisplatin and RAPTA-T - with the serum proteins albumin and transferrin. In contrast to previous approaches, the technique allowed the total recovery of the metals from the column and was able to discriminate between the different species of the metallodrugs and their complexes with the proteins at femtomolar detection levels. Metal binding was found to be dependent on the protein concentration and on the incubation time of the sample. Cis…

Concentration and energy fluctuations in a critical polymer mixture

1995

A semi-grand-canonical Monte Carlo algorithm is employed in conjunction with the bond fluctuation model to investigate the critical properties of an asymmetric binary (AB) polymer mixture. By applying the equal peak-weight criterion to the concentration distribution, the coexistence curve separating the A-rich and B-rich phases is identified as a function of temperature and chemical potential. To locate the critical point of the model, the cumulant intersection method is used. The accuracy of this approach for determining the critical parameters of fluids is assessed. Attention is then focused on the joint distribution function of the critical concentration and energy, which is analysed usi…

Putting molecules in their place.

2014

Each class of microscope is limited to imaging specific aspects of cell structure and/or molecular organization. However, imaging the specimen by complementary microscopes and correlating the data can overcome this limitation. Whilst not a new approach, the field of correlative imaging is currently benefitting from the emergence of new microscope techniques. Here we describe the correlation of cryogenic fluorescence tomography (CFT) with soft X‐ray tomography (SXT). This amalgamation of techniques integrates 3D molecular localization data (CFT) with a high‐resolution, 3D cell reconstruction of the cell (SXT). Cells are imaged in both modalities in a near‐native, cryopreserved state. Here we…

Sparse Manifold Clustering and Embedding to discriminate gene expression profiles of glioblastoma and meningioma tumors.

2013

Sparse Manifold Clustering and Embedding (SMCE) algorithm has been recently proposed for simultaneous clustering and dimensionality reduction of data on nonlinear manifolds using sparse representation techniques. In this work, SMCE algorithm is applied to the differential discrimination of Glioblastoma and Meningioma Tumors by means of their Gene Expression Profiles. Our purpose was to evaluate the robustness of this nonlinear manifold to classify gene expression profiles, characterized by the high-dimensionality of their representations and the low discrimination power of most of the genes. For this objective, we used SMCE to reduce the dimensionality of a preprocessed dataset of 35 single…

3D bioprinting of tissue units with mesenchymal stem cells, retaining their proliferative and differentiating potential, in polyphosphate-containing …

2021

Abstract The three-dimensional (3D)-printing processes reach increasing recognition as important fabrication techniques to meet the growing demands in tissue engineering. However, it is imperative to fabricate 3D tissue units, which contain cells that have the property to be regeneratively active. In most bio-inks, a metabolic energy-providing component is missing. Here a formulation of a bio-ink is described, which is enriched with polyphosphate (polyP), a metabolic energy providing physiological polymer. The bio-ink composed of a scaffold (N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan), a hydrogel (alginate) and a cell adhesion matrix (gelatin) as well as polyP substantially increases the viability and the …
