Aging effects and feasibility of statistical learning tasks across modalities

Knowledge on statistical learning (SL) in healthy elderly is scarce. Theoretically, it is not clear whether aging affects modality-specific and/or domain-general learning mechanisms. Practically, there is a lack of research on simplified SL tasks, which would ease the burden of testing in clinical populations. Against this background, we conducted two experiments across three modalities (auditory, visual and visuomotor) in a total of 93 younger and older adults. Teaching practice as a testbench of learning in master's degree education for nurse teachers in Finland.

This article presents the approach and procedures used in a Finnish developmental study on nurse teacher education. The teaching practice period was organized by dividing student teachers into small study groups and assigning the group an entire course to be planned and carried out in teacher/student collaboration. The work process of the groups was videotaped and analysed qualitatively. Preliminary results and ideas concerning the developmental needs of nurse teacher education are presented.

Mood congruence effect in explicit and implicit memory tasks: a comparison between depressed patients, schizophrenic patients and controls

Summary This study investigates mood congruence effect in explicit and implicit memory tasks in 23 inpatients fulfilling DSM-III-R criteria for major depressive disorder. Performances were compared to those of 15 in- or outpatients fulfilling DSM-III-R criteria for schizophrenia, and 37 normal subjects serving as euthymics controls. All subjects were submitted to a standard cued recall test and to a word stem completion test devised to assess the effect of the initial presentation without the explicit retrieval of the words being necessary.
