Hydroxyl radicals from secondary organic aerosol decomposition in water

Abstract. We found that ambient and laboratory-generated secondary organic aerosols (SOA) form substantial amounts of OH radicals upon interaction with liquid water, which can be explained by the decomposition of organic hydroperoxides. The molar OH yield from SOA formed by ozonolysis of terpenes (α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene) is ~ 0.1 % upon extraction with pure water and increases to ~ 1.5 % in the presence of Fe2+ ions due to Fenton-like reactions. Our findings imply that the chemical reactivity and aging of SOA particles is strongly enhanced upon interaction with water and iron. The use of the voltammetry of immobilized particles (VIMP) approach, by means of the voltammetric response of microparticulate films from ethanolic leaf extracts in contact with aqueous electrolytes and direct contact probe leaf voltammetry, to monitor the defense of plants against external stressors is described. This approach is applied to study the chemical communication between plants of Peperomia obtusifolia A. Dietr. submitted to herbivory by the beetle Monoplatus sp.
Biogeography and ecology of geographically distant populations of sibling Cryptocephalus leaf beetles

Different populations of two closely related species, Cryptocephalusflavipes and C. bameuli, from western (Alps, Apennines and Pyrenees) and central Europe (Poland, Ukraine and Pannonia) were analysed. On the basis of DNA sequences from two genes, cox1 and ef1-alpha, distinctiveness of both species was confirmed. Nevertheless, possible hybrids were identified in Carpathian mountains. We found a significant genetic differentiation among populations of C. flavipes and C. bameuli from distant regions but a high genetic similarity between populations of C. bameuli from north and south of the Carpathians.
