Di corsa, per forza. Performances rituali per la Domenica di Pasqua in Sicilia
2020
Several sicilian religious celebrations are characterized by a particular mode of processional transport of the fercoli with the statues of the Saints. These are made to run and dance by devoted young men, often competing with each other, both on the streets of the inhabited centers and, in rare cases, inside the religious buildings. This mode of transport is called, especially in the countries of the western Agrigento’s area, “rigattiata”. Many evidences, first of all the agonal climate, suggest that the same performative logic presides over the ritual execution of the “rigattiati” and the ergological action of the work in the fields. The competitive and conflicting climate between two or …
Algae in urban water bodies - control of growth and use as a biomas
2018
Enhancing the ecology security of Ukraine and other developing countries is predetermined by the environmental problems of cities. It prompts studies on the contamination of city's and adjacent water bodies. The control of blue-green algae distribution and the use of its biomass for production of the biofuels, energy, oils, medicine, etc. is one of the contributing factors to the well-balanced development of infrastructure of cities. The intensity of the processes of eutrophication and the species composition of the algae, which cause algal blooming, was investigated based on data of the Vorskla River in Poltava city (Ukraine). Relevant methods, statistical data of Ukrainian Environmental S…

The Immunology of Zoonotic Infections
2012
Zoonotic infections are in general defined as infections transmitted from animal to man (and less frequently vice versa), either directly (through contact or contact with animal products) or indirectly (through an intermediate vector as an arthropod or an insect) [1]. Although the burden of zoonotic infections worldwide is major, both in terms of immediate and long-term morbidity and mortality [2, 3] and in terms of emergence/reemergence and socioeconomical, ecological, and political correlations [4], scientific and public health interest and funding for these diseases remain relatively minor. Zoonoses include diseases induced by diverse pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites), …
Investigating the professional agency of secondary school English teachers in South Korea
2020
This qualitative study examines the professional agency of secondary English teachers in Midwestern South Korea. Specifically, it investigates how secondary English teachers in South Korea understand their professional agency and what mediates their professional agency. The ecological approach in this study recognises that agency encompasses both individual and environmental dimensions and is formed through the constant interplay between the individual and the environment. The dataset for this study comprises 15 semi-structured interviews with secondary English teachers in South Korea. The thematic analysis highlights a significant gap between Korean English teachers’ espoused agency and re…
Adolescents' perception of scientific inquiry in nature : a drawing analysis
2019
This study was carried out to determine adolescents’ perception of scientific inquiry (SI) in nature and the effect of a science camp on those perceptions. Eleven science campers (14 to 16 years old) participated in this research during a science camp. Pre- and post-test included open questions and drawing tasks. The campers’ drawings were analyzed to assess their out-of-school perceptions related to SI. The aim was to clarify what phases and factors the campers associated with SI in nature, and how their perceptions differ after participating at a science camp. The findings suggest that the phases of SI were well known before the camp, but minor developments in campers’ perceptions of the …
Marcatge posicional i prominència en el vocalisme àton
2008
It has long been noticed that more perceptible elements tend to associate to positions that are structurally stronger to the end that several prominent features converge in the same site; and vice versa: elements of low perceptibility prototypically associate to less prominent positions ("positional markedness"). The main aim of this paper is to present the effects of positional markedness in the a-tonic vowel system of Catalan through the analysis of two cases that have not been studied in depth, i.e. the occurrence of different epenthetic vowels according to the position in which they appear in Alghero and western Catalan, and the presence of different patterns of vowel reduction in weste…
Is it me or the music? : Stress reduction and the role of regulation strategies and music
2019
Music is a common resource for the regulation of emotions, moods, and stress. This study aimed at determining the individual and relative impact on stress reduction of two of the main factors involved in musical affect regulation: regulation strategies and music itself. The current study took place in an experimental setting and followed a factorial within-subjects design. First, the participants ( n = 34) filled in an online survey where they identified their self-perceived “adequate”/“inadequate” music examples for the purpose of reducing stress and self-perceived “adequate”/“inadequate” strategies for the same purpose. In the lab they went through a stress induction procedure and then w…
Professional Competences of Music Therapists Working in Post-stroke Rehabilitation
2012
The aim of this qualitative study is to gain more insight into the skills and knowledge that music therapists feel they need, in order to work successfully with people who have had an acute stroke. For this purpose, six music therapists were interviewed about their own particular specialist education. Another interview topic for them was to recount their subjective experiences of poststroke rehabilitation work in hospitals and health care units during the course of two projects that they participated in. The first was a project that specifically used music listening during acute stroke rehabilitation; and the second was a project, which used more active music therapy techniques, like drummi…
