Test-retest reliability of a new self reported comprehensive questionnaire measuring frequencies of different modes of adolescents commuting to schoo…
2009
Published version of an article from the journal: International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity Article available from: http://www.ijbnpa.org/content/6/1/68 Background: Studies assessing active commuting to school usually use simple questionnaires, and often is mode of commuting reported with a single questionnaire item only. The purpose of the present study is to report the test-retest reliability of a newly developed comprehensive questionnaire on active commuting to school and work among 6thgrade school children and their parents in Norway. Methods: A total of 106 pupils and 77 parents completed a questionnaire two times, 14 days apart. The questionnaire consisted o…
Differential attributes of phytoplankton across the trophic gradient: a conceptual landscape with gaps
1998
I provide a conceptual landscape of attributes of phytoplankton related to trophic gradients, by reviewing 69 papers and books on eutrophication, with special reference to the ecology of the phytoplankton. Forty-eight ecological variables such as total phosphorus and Chl-a, are used, each related to the trophic gradient measured. They are subdivided in structural features of the phytoplankton, functional or dynamic features, and other relevant properties of the plankton community. Only twelve of the forty-eight variables are statistically related to trophic gradient. In most cases, variability across a trophic gradient is only nominally described. Less attention is given to functional, stru…

2012
Author's version of an article in the journal: Nordisk Sygeplejeforskning. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/nsf/2012/01/art02 Almost half of all Tanzanian women deliver at home, alone, assisted by family members or traditional birth attendants. The aim of this article was to expand existing knowledge on how pregnant and laboring women's preferences and decisions of birth place and type of assistance are influenced. A qualitative study with semi-structured interviews, with two traditional birth attendants and one midwife, and a participatory observation was conducted at a health clinic in Tanga District, Tanzania. It was found that the interaction between pregnant…
CaCl2, Bisoxazoline, and Malonate: A Protocol for an Asymmetric Michael Reaction
2015
A mild protocol for the asymmetric Michael addition of dimethyl malonate to various α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds was developed. The salient feature of this methodology is that a cheap and environmentally friendly Lewis acid, CaCl2, was used as a catalyst. An aminoindanol- and pyridine-derived ligand provided in the presence of CaCl2 Michael adducts in moderate to high enantioselectivities. The scope of the reaction was demonstrated.
Impact of Fasting Glycemia on Short-Term Prognosis after Acute Myocardial Infarction
2007
The prognosis of patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI), according to the new criteria for impaired fasting glucose (IFG) (FG 100-126 mg/dl), has not been evaluated.A total of 2353 patients with acute MI and surviving at d 5 after admission were analyzed for short-term morbidity and mortality. FG was obtained at d 4 and 5. Patients were classified as diabetes mellitus (known diabetes or FGor = 126 mg/dl), high IFG (110or = FG126 mg/dl), low IFG (100or = FG110 mg/dl), and normal fasting glucose (NFG) (FG100 mg/dl).Among the 2353 patients, 968 (41%) had diabetes mellitus, 262 (11%) had high IFG, 332 (14%) had low IFG, and 791 (34%) had NFG. Compared with NFG patients, 30-d cardiovascu…
On the Borana Calendrical System: A Preliminary Field Report
1988
This article addresses the astronomical functioning of the lunar calendar of the Oromo Borana (Ethiopia and Kenya). It is based on the participant observation method, observing the night sky over a time of about one year with Bante Abbagala, a Borana expert in time reckoning. Differently from previous ethnographic accounts and hypotheses, the author suggests that the Borana implicitly add an intercalary month that allows keeping correspondence between season and the name of the lunar month, even if they do not acknowledge it. They do not consider the declination of the moon, sun or stars. They rather apply a complex devise that allows the direct evaluation of the relative right ascension po…

Prophecy and Apocalypse among the Oromo-Borana: The Power of Chiasmus
2018
This chapter bridges the rhetoric culture and anticipation theoretical domains for reinterpreting the prophetic and apocalyptic texts on the Oromo-Borana (Ethiopia). The analysis qualifies prophecy as a practice of anticipation, a rational and collective exercise of criticism to current social trends, facilitated by creative individuals that make full use of the cognitive potential of chiasmus and other rhetorical devises.
