Under diagnosis of adult ADHD: cultural influences and societal burden.

2012

Objective: To explore the literature focusing on cultural influences in the diagnosis of adult ADHD and respective societal burden. Method: A review of the literature over the past 10 years was performed using OVID. Results: Although numerous articles focused on diagnosis and burden of adult ADHD, few focused on cultural factors influencing diagnosis. Like other mental health disorders, cultural and social perspectives contribute to our understanding of adult ADHD and may play a significant role in the diagnosis and varying acceptance of the condition. Moreover, adults with ADHD may underestimate the impact of ADHD symptoms, and in many cases have learned to compensate for ADHD related imp…

From Herder to Strecker: Birth and Developments of the Anthropological Notion of Culture in Germany

2023

Austrian and German anthropological traditions are considered in view of the influence they had on global anthropology. The chapter is built around the centrality of the anthropological notion of culture and cultural dynamics. The particularistic and relativist notion of culture is in fact believed to have emerged from Germany from the eighteenth century, where intellectuals have juxtaposed the term Kultur to Zivilisation. Within German anthropology, universalistic perspectives on culture have continued through the nineteenth century, as in the evolutionary approach of Gustav Klemm and Johann Jakob Bachofen. A different form of cultural universalism was introduced by Adolf Bastian with his …

Cutinases: Characteristics and Insights in Industrial Production

2021

Cutinases (EC 3.1.1.74) are serin esterases that belong to the α/β hydrolases superfamily and present in the Ser-His-Asp catalytic triad. They show characteristics between esterases and lipases. These enzymes hydrolyze esters and triacylglycerols and catalyze esterification and transesterification reactions. Cutinases are synthesize by plant pathogenic fungi, but some bacteria and plants have been found to produce cutinases as well. In nature they facilitate a pathogen’s invasion by hydrolyzing the cuticle that protects plants, but can be also used for saprophytic fungi as a way to nourish themselves. Cutinases can hydrolyze a wide range of substrates like esters, polyesters, triacylglycero…

Food selection in Eucypris virens (Crustacea: Ostracoda) under experimental conditions

2007

Ostracods have long been studied by scientists because their fossil remnants provide a valuable tool for the reconstruction of past environmental changes, including climate change and anthropogenic eutrophication. Relatively little is known about the physiology, behaviour and reproductive ecology of recent forms. We argue that filling this gap in knowledge requires stable cultures that can be used in laboratory studies. Here we provide quantitative information on the food preference of the common non-marine ostracod Eucypris virens. Using an experimental device allowing a free choice of eight food items, including both auto- and heterotrophic organisms, observations were carried out on grou…

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus ticks collected from migratory birds in Southern Norway

2010

Abstract Background Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) are the causative agent for Lyme borreliosis (LB), the most common tick-borne disease in the northern hemisphere. Birds are considered important in the global dispersal of ticks and tick-borne pathogens through their migration. The present study is the first description of B. burgdorferi prevalence and genotypes in Ixodes ricinus ticks feeding on birds during spring and autumn migration in Norway. Methods 6538 migratory birds were captured and examined for ticks at Lista Bird Observatory during the spring and the autumn migration in 2008. 822 immature I. ricinus ticks were collected from 215 infested birds. Ticks were investigated f…

Identification, molecular cloning, and phylogenetic analysis of a non-respiratory pseudo-hemocyanin of Homarus americanus.

1999

Copper-containing hemocyanins serve to transport oxygen in many arthropod species. Here I describe the identification and cDNA cloning of a structurally closely related non-respiratory pseudo-hemocyanin (PHc) of the American lobster, Homarus americanus. This protein has lost the ability to bind copper and, therefore, oxygen because a histidine residue in copper-binding site A is replaced by tyrosine. Like many arthropod hemocyanins, PHc forms a hexamer. It consists of two different subunit types of 660 and 661 amino acids, respectively, that share a 94.4% sequence identity. Whereas Homarus hemocyanin is produced in the hepatopancreas, PHc is synthesized by the ovaries and the heart tissue. …

Capitanes del Renacimiento. Ética militar en la España mediterránea, c. 1500-1550

2004

In Sixteenth Century Europe, the chivalric values which were in the core of military aristocracy ethics became enriched with court-like ideals. In this paper we study the diffusion of those ideals among army officers of the Hispanic Monarchy in the various…

Exploring Frequency-Dependent Brain Networks from Ongoing EEG Using Spatial ICA During Music Listening

2020

Recently, exploring brain activity based on functional networks during naturalistic stimuli especially music and video represents an attractive challenge because of the low signal-to-noise ratio in collected brain data. Although most efforts focusing on exploring the listening brain have been made through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), sensor-level electro- or magnetoencephalography (EEG/MEG) technique, little is known about how neural rhythms are involved in the brain network activity under naturalistic stimuli. This study exploited cortical oscillations through analysis of ongoing EEG and musical feature during freely listening to music. We used a data-driven method that co…

Come pensiamo noi antropologi? Per nugoli di polvere e brezze d’aria

2015

In front of my window, at home, I am dusting some books and, by doing it, I think of some possible ways to capture my stream of consciousness. What is my ambition? By connecting a simple and daily life action (dusting) to the general and pervading act of thinking, I try to do an anthropology of daily life and of thinking.

Biases in study design, implementation, and data analysis that distort the appraisal of clinical benefit and ESMO-Magnitude of Clinical Benefit Scale…

2021

BACKGROUND: The European Society for Medical Oncology-Magnitude of Clinical Benefit Scale (ESMO-MCBS) is a validated, widely used tool developed to score the clinical benefit from cancer medicines reported in clinical trials. ESMO-MCBS scores assume valid research methodologies and quality trial implementation. Studies incorporating flawed design, implementation, or data analysis may generate outcomes that exaggerate true benefit and are not generalisable. Failure to either indicate or penalise studies with bias undermines the intention and diminishes the integrity of ESMO-MCBS scores. This review aimed to evaluate the adequacy of the ESMO-MCBS to address bias generated by flawed design, im…
