A Decision Support Tool for Appropriate Glucose-Lowering Therapy in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

2015

Contains fulltext : 152084.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) BACKGROUND: Optimal glucose-lowering therapy in type 2 diabetes mellitus requires a patient-specific approach. Although a good framework, current guidelines are insufficiently detailed to address the different phenotypes and individual needs of patients seen in daily practice. We developed a patient-specific decision support tool based on a systematic analysis of expert opinion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on the American Diabetes Association (ADA)/European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 2012 position statement, a panel of 12 European experts rated the appropriateness (RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method) of tre…

Postural Sensorimotor Control on Anorectal Pressures and Pelvic Floor Muscle Tone and Strength: Effects of a Single 5P® LOGSURF Session. A Cross-Sect…

2021

Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is a functional condition present most frequently in women. Despite pelvic floor muscle training being considered by the International Continence Society (ICS) as the first-line treatment in uncomplicated urinary incontinence, other more comprehensive postural methods as 5P® LOGSURF have emerged. This preliminary cross-sectional study explores the effects of a single 5P® LOGSURF session on pelvic floor muscle (PFM) tone and strength (MVC), resting anal tone, intrarectal pressure, and deep abdominal muscles activation. Thirty women were included (11 without PFD and 19 with PFD). Primary outcome measures were PFM tone, PFM MVC and resting anal tone and secondary…

Proceedings of the Eighth Annual Deep Brain Stimulation Think Tank: Advances in Optogenetics, Ethical Issues Affecting DBS Research, Neuromodulatory …

2021

We estimate that 208,000 deep brain stimulation (DBS) devices have been implanted to address neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders worldwide. DBS Think Tank presenters pooled data and determined that DBS expanded in its scope and has been applied to multiple brain disorders in an effort to modulate neural circuitry. The DBS Think Tank was founded in 2012 providing a space where clinicians, engineers, researchers from industry and academia discuss current and emerging DBS technologies and logistical and ethical issues facing the field. The emphasis is on cutting edge research and collaboration aimed to advance the DBS field. The Eighth Annual DBS Think Tank was held virtually on Septem…

Online audio-visual information on oral cancer for Spanish-speaking laypersons. A cross-sectional study

2021

Background Lack of knowledge and awareness of oral cancer seem to be the main causes of diagnostic delay. Online resources are often used by patients to obtain health/medical information. However, there are no reports on the quality and usefulness of oral cancer audio-visual resources in Spanish. The aims of this investigation were to disclose the type of information about oral cancer available, and whether it may be useful to shorten the patients’ oral cancer appraisal time-interval. Material and Methods Cross-sectional study undertaken at three video-sharing sites on October, 13th 2019. Keywords: “Cáncer oral”; “cáncer de boca”. The first 100 results in each viewing list were retrieved by…

Oral medicine practice in Europe and Australia: Identifying practitioner characteristics and their clinical activity

2021

Oral Medicine is a young dental specialty born almost a century ago and deals with orofacial conditions not directly attributable to the most prevalent tooth pathologies such as dental caries or periodontal diseases. Presentations may reflect local disease or orofacial manifestations of more widespread pathology affecting other parts of the body. Due to its recency as a distinct discipline and to heterogeneous global settings, Oral Medicine has not yet achieved a shared scope and definition, as well as a recognized status across the globe. The current report presents survey data gathered from Oral Medicine practitioners in Europe and Australia and aimed to identify practitioner characterist…

Childhood maltreatment and clinical severity of treatment‐resistant depression in a French cohort of outpatients (FACE‐DR): One‐year follow‐up

2020

International audience; Childhood maltreatment is associated with major depressive disorder (MDD). It not only increases the risk of lifetime MDD, but it also aggravates its course. Among depressed patients, 20-30% of them experience treatment-resistance depression (TRD). We aimed to assess the association between childhood maltreatment, severity of depression in a unipolar TRD sample, and patient outcomes after one-year of follow-up. Methods: Patients were recruited for a prospective cohort from the French network of TRD expert centers. Depressive symptom severity was assessed with the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology se…

Subtypes of panic attacks and ICD-9 classification.

1986

No single ICD-9 category corresponds to panic disorder (DSM-III). To investigate whether patients with panic attacks can be identified by means of ICD-9, 97 patients with three panic attacks within 3 weeks were recruited from various medical centers, and were classified independently according to DSM-III and ICD-9. The ICD-9 diagnoses were scattered over a broad range of categories, and it was impossible to identify patients with panic disorder in this manner. Anxiety state, affective psychosis, and depressive neurosis were the most frequent ICD-9 diagnoses. The boundary between affective psychosis on the one hand and anxiety state and depressive neurosis on the other hand was validated by …

New diagnostic and imaging technologies in dermatology

2021

INTRODUCTION Diagnosis of dermatological disorders is primarily based on clinical examination in combination with histopathology. However, clinical findings alone may not be sufficient for accurate diagnosis and cutaneous biopsies are being associated with morbidity. OBJECTIVE The objective of this article is to review the newer technologies along with their applications, limitation and future prospectus. METHODOLOGY Comprehensive literature search was performed using electronic online databases "PubMed" and "Google Scholar". Articles published in English language were considered for the review. RESULTS In order to improve and/or widen the armamentarium in dermatologic disease diagnosis and…

Inventario Clark-Beck de Obsesión-Compulsión (C-BOCI) : validación para su uso en población española

2009

The Clark-Beck Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (C-BOCI) is a new self-administered inventory (Clark & Beck, 2002), designed to offer a valid, specifi c and reliable tool for the screening of the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): it assesses symptoms, their consequences, and takes into account the assumptions of current cognitive models about the disorder. The aim of this study has been to examine the usefulness of the C-BOCI in Spanish population. The questionnaire was completed together with other OCD, depression, and anxiety instruments by 506 adults without mental disorders and 44 OCD patients. The α values were ≥ 0.80 except for the obsessions subs- cale in the OCD group. Concurrent a…

Neuro-Psychiatric Alterations in Patients with Diabetic Foot Syndrome

2019

Diabetic Foot Syndrome (DFS) is a common long-term complication of diabetes mellitus. DFS has recently been associated with adverse effects on brain function which could further impair the quality of life of these patients, as well as increase the social and economic burden, morbidity, and premature mortality of the disease. The current knowledge of neuropsychiatric alterations e.g. cognitive impairment, gait disorder, depression, and quality of life in patients with diabetic foot syndrome is summarized. The cognitive domains altered in DFS are executive function, memory, and psychomotor speed. Compared to diabetic patients without DFS, individuals with DFS present gait alterations caused …
