Interspecific territoriality in Calopteryx damselflies: the role of secondary sexual characters

Interspecific territoriality is usually interpreted to result from interspecific interference competition, although it may also originate from mistaken species recognition. In the latter case, it may be based on similarity of secondary sexual characters. In the damselfly Calopteryx splendens, males have pigmented wing spots as a sexual character, and males with the largest spots resemble males of another species, Calopteryx virgo. Probably because of this resemblance, C. virgo males are more aggressive towards large- than small-spotted C. splendens males. Abstract The mode I fracture parameters for an orthotropic body are directly calculated from full-field deformation measurements provided by Digital Image Correlation (DIC). Three complementary and direct approaches are evaluated and compared: (i) the determination of the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) by fitting the displacement field using the analytical expression proposed by Lekhnitskii; (ii) the determination of the J-Integral by using the Energy Domain Integral (EDI) formulation on the raw DIC data; and (iii) the calculation of the J-Integral using the EDI approach on the displacement data fitted using Lekhnitskii’s formulation. The behavior of the beam-soil system is examined within the scope of the bilateral schematization of ideal elastoplastic bodies, in the following work stages; the expression for the limit load is supplied for each stage: Two peculiar features of the problem are highlighted:1) the “plastic hinge migration” phenomenon, due to the elastic unloading of the material, and2) the successive propagation of plastification in the soil which, being related to the displacement of the hinges in the beam, leads to the identification of the collapse mechanism of the systme.

Abstract Masonry material presents a mechanical response strongly dependent on the static and kinematic phenomena occurring in the constituents and at their joints. Modelling of laser beam texturing process: experimental and numerical approaches

The aim of this work is to reache a better control of the laser beam surface texturing process on three materials: 304L, TA6V and AA6056 alloys. For this purpose, two complementary methods, experimental and numerical modelling, have been used. As a result of the experimental design approach, it was observed that the laser surface texturing process of 304L and TA6V alloys is strongly influenced by the pulse energy and frequency. In order to obtain a surface roughness Sa < 5 µm for the highest possible productivity it is necessary to work with an energy of 5 mJ and a frequency ranging between 10 and 12 kHz. Calculating the long-term displacement rates of a normal fault from the high-resolution stratigraphic record (early Tethyan rifting, French Alps)

Displacement rates of normal faults deduced from stratigraphic data are often unreliable. Here we calculate the velocity of motion on a normal fault from the variations in accommodation potential on both sides of the fault within a highresolution time-frame established by biostratigraphy and physical stratigraphy. Our example is the Ornon normal fault bounding the Early Jurassic Bourg-d’Oisans Basin formed during Tethyan rifting. We show that motion on the fault was discontinuous when examined at high resolution and over a long time interval.
