Quantum synchronization as a local signature of super- and subradiance
2017
We study the relationship between the collective phenomena of super- and subradiance and spontaneous synchronization of quantum systems. To this aim we revisit the case of two detuned qubits interacting through a pure dissipative bosonic environment, which contains the minimal ingredients for our analysis. By using the Liouville formalism, we are able to find analytically the ultimate connection between these phenomena. We find that dynamical synchronization is due to the presence of longstanding coherence between the ground state of the system and the subradiant state. We finally show that, under pure dissipation, the emergence of spontaneous synchronization and of subradiant emission occu…
Master equation approach to the three-state open Majorana model
2019
The three-state Majorana model in the presence of dissipation is considered. Different models of system-environment interaction are explored, ranging from a situation where dissipation is the main effect to regimes where dephasing is mainly produced. It is shown that the detrimental effects of the noise are stronger in the presence of dissipation than in the presence of dephasing. The role of temperature is also discussed.
Oscillatory Localization of Quantum Walks Analyzed by Classical Electric Circuits
2016
We examine an unexplored quantum phenomenon we call oscillatory localization, where a discrete-time quantum walk with Grover's diffusion coin jumps back and forth between two vertices. We then connect it to the power dissipation of a related electric network. Namely, we show that there are only two kinds of oscillating states, called uniform states and flip states, and that the projection of an arbitrary state onto a flip state is bounded by the power dissipation of an electric circuit. By applying this framework to states along a single edge of a graph, we show that low effective resistance implies oscillatory localization of the quantum walk. This reveals that oscillatory localization occ…
Open multistate Majorana model
2019
Abstract The Majorana model in the presence of dissipation and dephasing is considered. First, it is proven that increasing the Hilbert space dimension the system becomes more and more fragile to quantum noise, whether dephasing or dissipation are mainly present. Second, it is shown that, contrary to its ideal counterpart, the dynamics related to the open Majorana model cannot be considered as the combined dynamics of a set of independent spin-1/2 models.
Spontaneous, collective coherence in driven, dissipative cavity arrays
2014
We study an array of dissipative tunnel-coupled cavities, each interacting with an incoherently pumped two-level emitter. For cavities in the lasing regime, we find correlations between the light fields of distant cavities, despite the dissipation and the incoherent nature of the pumping mechanism. These correlations decay exponentially with distance for arrays in any dimension but become increasingly long ranged with increasing photon tunneling between adjacent cavities. The interaction-dominated and the tunneling-dominated regimes show markedly different scaling of the correlation length which always remains finite due to the finite photon trapping time. We propose a series of observables…
Stabilization of quantum metastable states by dissipation
2015
Normally, quantum fluctuations enhance the escape from metastable states in the presence of dissipation. Here we show that dissipation can enhance the stability of a quantum metastable system, consisting of a particle moving in a strongly asymmetric double well potential, interacting with a thermal bath. We find that the escape time from the metastable state has a nonmonotonic behavior versus the system-bath coupling and the temperature, producing a stabilizing effect.
Entropy production and information fluctuations along quantum trajectories
2013
Employing the stochastic wave function method, we study quantum features of stochastic entropy production in nonequilibrium processes of open systems. It is demonstarted that continuous measurements on the environment introduce an additional, non-thermal contribution to the entropy flux, which is shown to be a direct consequence of quantum fluctuations. These features lead to a quantum definition of single trajectory entropy contributions, which accounts for the difference between classical and quantum trajectories and results in a quantum correction to the standard form of the integral fluctuation theorem.
Hilbert space partitioning for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians: From off-resonance to Zeno subspaces
2020
Abstract Effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians describing decaying systems are derived and analyzed in connection with the occurrence of possible Hilbert space partitioning, resulting in a confinement of the dynamics. In some cases, this fact can be interpreted properly as Zeno effect or Zeno dynamics, according to the dimension of the subspace one focuses on; in some other cases, the interpretation is more complicated and traceable back to a mix of Zeno phenomena and lack of resonance. Depending on the complex phases of the diagonal terms of the Hamiltonian, the system reacts in different ways, requiring larger moduli for the dynamical confinement to occur when the complex phase is close to…
Influence of dissipation on the extraction of quantum states via repeated measurements
2007
A quantum system put in interaction with another one that is repeatedly measured is subject to a non-unitary dynamics, through which it is possible to extract subspaces. This key idea has been exploited to propose schemes aimed at the generation of pure quantum states (purification). All such schemes have so far been considered in the ideal situations of isolated systems. In this paper, we analyze the influence of non-negligible interactions with environment during the extraction process, with the scope of investigating the possibility of purifying the state of a system in spite of the sources of dissipation. A general framework is presented and a paradigmatic example consisting of two inte…
Unavoidable decoherence in semiconductor quantum dots
2005
Phonon-induced unavoidable decoherence of orbital degrees of freedom in quantum dots is studied and the relevant time scales are estimated. Dephasing of excitons due to acoustic phonons and, in a polar medium, to optical phonons, including anharmonic effects and enhancement of the effective Fr\"ohlich constant due to localization, is assessed for typical self-assembled quantum dots. Temporal inefficiency of Pauli blocking due to lattice inertia is predicted. For quantum dots placed in a diluted magnetic semiconductor medium a magnon-induced dephasing of a spin is also estimated in accordance with experimental results.
