Chorioretinopathia serosa centralis (CSC) und Kortikosteroide

2008

Background Corticosteroids are under suspicion of playing an important role in the development of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Patients and methods In a prospective study the course of CSC was evaluated in a consecutive series of 46 patients, who received the diagnosis of CSC in the period 4 / 2004 - 12 / 2005. Data analysis was focused on the complete medical and ocular history and the ocular course of this disease. Results 27 patients had been taking exogenous corticosteroids (oral, intravenous, inhalative, cutaneous and intraarticular) within 4 weeks before onset of symptoms. Preliminary study of the neuromuscular activation during barefoot and shod running

2015

Community Care in Taiwan

2004

SUMMARY This article explores the policy definitions and the funder roles of central and local governments in community care in Taiwan. The notion of community care has been adopted in Taiwan following the model of Hong Kong but the main question of the article is whether this has resulted in actual service provisions at the community level, forming an alternative to institutional care. The data has been collected from several sources: policy documents, official statistics, surveys, general reports, funding provision reports, and empirical studies. The results show that neither central nor local authorities are seriously involved in caring for elderly people or persons with disabilities in …

A study of hurdles in mass treatment of schistosomiasis in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

2015

Background: It has been estimated that 700 million people worldwide and 5.2 million people in South Africa are in need of annual treatment for schistosomiasis. In accordance with the current policy the Department of Health (DoH) in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa, aimed to reach 75% treatment coverage in a mass treatment campaign (MTC) of schools in a schistosomiasis-endemic area. Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed to explore the implementation, coverage, challenges and limitations of a DoH MTC in a middle-income country. The study was conducted by exploring nurses’ and research team records, school enrolment lists and parental consent forms. Results: Slightly more than 10 000…

A double blind placebo-controlled study on the rectal administration of morphine as a premedication in abdominal hysterectomy

2000

Abstract Benzodiazepines are now commonly used as anxiolytic premedication prior to surgery. However, the role of opioids, as a premedication, has diminished over the last decades and they are no longer routinely used for premedication. Rather, opioids are generally used to treat severe pain in the postoperative period. Studies have shown that both NSAIDs and opioids improve analgesia in the early postoperative period. Until now, there have been no studies investigating the effect of morphine as a rectal premedication in adults in combination with blood levels of morphine. The effect of a rectal premedication with 30 mg of morphine sulphate, on postoperative pain levels and opioid consumpti…

Caries and quality of life in portuguese adolescents : impact of diet and behavioural risk factors

2018

Background The aim of this study was to assess the impact of diet and behavioural risk factors on caries appearance, and on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among Portuguese adolescents. Material and methods An epidemiological study conducted on 782 adolescents between 11-17 years, from randomly selected public schools of the 3rd cycle of basic education. All participants were asked for self-perceived general status health, about tooth-brushing habits and about the using of toothpaste with fluoride and a Food Frequency Questionnaire. The DMFT index (decayed, missing and filled teeth) was evaluated according to WHO criteria. To evaluate the OHRQoL, the 49-items Oral Health Impact…

Plantar pressure distribution during running with a self-customized foot orthosis in a home microwave.

2021

The individualization of a custom-made foot orthosis could provide improvements in plantar loading distribution regarding a prefabricated one. However, not all runners can afford it because of its high cost. A new type of low-cost prefabricated foot orthoses with self-customization could be the solution. The aim of the study was to evaluate if self-customized prefabricated foot orthoses (SCFO) could improve plantar pressure distribution with respect to generic prefabricated ones without customization, during the intense prolonged running. Thirty healthy recreational runners performed two tests of 30 min running on a treadmill, each one with a foot orthosis condition, on different days. Mean…

Interventional treatment for neuropathic pain due to combined cervical radiculopathy and carpal tunnel syndrome: a case report

2017

Key Clinical Message The coexistence of median and cervical nerve root damage might hide a complex pathophysiology. LOW BACK PAIN IN YOUNG TEAM SPORT PLAYERS: A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

2014

Background Low back pain (LBP) is a common complaint in general population affecting both genders and almost all age-groups. LBP is a common problem in sports as well, even in younger populations. LBP is prone to recur, thus there is a need for studies on the early phases of the problem in different sports. Objective To investigate the prevalence, nature, severity and risk factors of self-reported LBP in young team sport players. Design A retrospective cross-sectional study. Setting Finnish female and male basketball, floorball, ice hockey and volleyball teams. Participants This study is a part of an ongoing cohort study exploring risk factors for sports injuries. Players from 22 teams, a t…
