Multi-user interference mitigation under limited feedback requirements for WCDMA systems with base station cooperation
2016
One of the techniques that has been recently identified for dealing with multi-user interference (MUI) in future communications systems is base station (BS) cooperation or joint processing. However, perfect MUI cancellation with this technique demands severe synchronization requirements, perfect and global channel state information (CSI), and an increased backhaul and signaling overhead. In this paper, we consider a more realistic layout with the aim of mitigating the MUI, where only local CSI is available at the BSs. Due to synchronization inaccuracies and errors in the channel estimation, the system becomes partially asynchronous. In the downlink of wideband code division multiple access …
The records of 28 taxa of marine algae from the Central Mediterranean coast of Spain are given. 24 are new records for this sector of Spanish coast. Specilly interesting are Peyssonnelia codana, recorded for first time in the mediterranean coasts of Spain, Peyssonnelia feldmannii, Ceramium fastigiatum var. flaccida, y Cystoseria sauvageauan…

Deep Learning Techniques for Depression Assessment
2018
Depression is a typical mood disorder, which affects a significant number of individuals worldwide at an increasing rate. Objective measures for early detection of signs related to depression could be beneficial for clinicians with regards to a decision support system. In this paper, assessment of depression is done by applying three deep learning techniques of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). These techniques are transfer learning using AlexNet, fine-tuning using AlexNet and building an end to end CNN. The inputs of the CNNs are a combination of Motion History Image, Landmark Motion History Image and Gabor Motion History Image, and have been generated on a depression dataset. Accuracy o…
Effect of the shampoo Ultra Clean on drug concentrations in human hair
2000
The influence of the special shampoo Ultra Clean (Zydot Unlimited, Tulsa, Oklahoma) on the results of hair analyses was investigated. Hair samples from persons (n = 14) with a known history of drug abuse were collected at autopsy. The hair samples were divided into separate strands which were analyzed both after washing with Ultra Clean and without treatment. Hair analyses were performed by methanol extraction under sonication, purification by solid phase extraction and GC/MS in SIM mode according to routine procedures for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cocaine, amphetamine, methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), methylenedioxyethylamphetamine (MDE), heroin, 6-m…
Quantitative corneal anatomy: evaluation of the effect of diabetes duration on the endothelial cell density and corneal thickness.
2014
Purpose To evaluate the differences in endothelial cell density (ECD) and central corneal thickness (CCT) between type II diabetic patients and age-matched healthy controls, and determine the impact of time from diagnosis. Methods This is a comparative study of 77 eyes of type II diabetic patients (33 males, 44 females) and 80 eyes of healthy subjects (42 males, and 38 females) whose ages ranged from 38 to 56 years. CCT, ECD, HbA1c levels, and Goldmann tonometry were measured. Results The CCT was significantly higher and the ECD significantly lower in long-term diabetic patients (10 years + since diagnosis) when compared with short-term diabetic patients (<1 year since diagnosis) and contro…
Gluten-Free Diet Reduces Symptoms, Particularly Diarrhea, in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Antigliadin IgG
2021
Background & Aims Many patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) perceive that their symptoms are triggered by wheat-containing foods. We assessed symptoms and gastrointestinal transit before and after a gluten-free diet (GFD) in unselected patients with IBS and investigated biomarkers associated with symptoms. Methods We performed a prospective study of 50 patients with IBS (ROME III, all subtypes), with and without serologic reactivity to gluten (antigliadin IgG and IgA), and 25 healthy subjects (controls) at a university hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, between 2012 and 2016. Gastrointestinal transit, gut symptoms, anxiety, depression, somatization, dietary habits, and microbiot…
Quasi Conjunction and Inclusion Relation in Probabilistic Default Reasoning
2011
We study the quasi conjunction and the Goodman & Nguyen inclusion relation for conditional events, in the setting of probabilistic default reasoning under coherence. We deepen two recent results given in (Gilio and Sanfilippo, 2010): the first result concerns p-entailment from a family F of conditional events to the quasi conjunction C(S) associated with each nonempty subset S of F; the second result, among other aspects, analyzes the equivalence between p-entailment from F and p-entailment from C(S), where S is some nonempty subset of F. We also characterize p-entailment by some alternative theorems. Finally, we deepen the connections between p-entailment and the Goodman & Nguyen inclusion…
Effects of acute social stress on the conditioned place preference induced by MDMA in adolescent and adult mice
2014
Exposure to social defeat stress increases the rewarding effects of psychostimulants in animal models, but its effect on 3,4-methylenedioxymethylamphetamine (MDMA) reward has received little attention. In the present study, we evaluated the influence of social defeat on the rewarding effects of MDMA in adolescent [postnatal day (PND) 29-40] and adult (PND 50-61) male mice using the conditioned place preference paradigm. Experimental mice were exposed to social defeat in an agonistic encounter before each session of conditioning with 1.25 or 10 mg/kg of MDMA. The effects of social defeat on corticosterone levels and the motor or the anxiogenic effects of MDMA were also evaluated. Mice expose…
Rewarding effects of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (“Ecstasy”) in dominant and subordinate OF-1 mice in the place preference conditioning paradigm
2006
We tested the ability of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) to induce conditioned place preference (CPP) in dominant and subordinate OF-1 mice subjected to cohabitation and repeated sessions of agonistic confrontation, as well as in non-confronted mice. We selected doses of MDMA (2, 6, 10 mg/kg) previously reported to induce CPP in mice and we measured expression of c-Fos evoked by the treatments in non-confronted mice. MDMA induced c-Fos protein in several corticolimbic regions involved in drug-induced reward. Mice were exposed to brief sessions of agonistic confrontation on 5 consecutive days. Determinations of circulating hormones and drug conditioning tests were carried out on com…
