FOLFIRI with or without celecoxib in advanced colorectal cancer: a randomized phase II study of the Gruppo Oncologico dell'Italia Meridionale (GOIM)
2006
Background The aim of the study was to verify the efficacy and safety of the addition of celecoxib to FOLFIRI combination therapy in patients affected by advanced colorectal cancer. Patients and methods Eighty-one chemotherapy-naive patients entered in this randomized phase II trial of the GOIM (protocol no. 2301). Patients were randomized to receive FOLFIRI regimen (arm A): irinotecan 180 mg/m2 on day 1 with LV5FU2 regimen (LV at 100 mg/m2 administered as a 2-h infusion before FU at 400 mg/m2 as an intravenous bolus injection, and FU at 600 mg/m2 as a 22-h infusion immediately after 5-FU bolus injection on day 1 and 2); or FOLFIRI plus celecoxib 400 mg twice daily for 14 days (arm B). Both…
Weekly oxaliplatin, high-dose infusional 5-fluorouracil and folinic acid as palliative third-line therapy of advanced colorectal carcinoma
2000
The efficacy of oxaliplatin combined with high-dose 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and folinic acid (FA) as an outpatient salvage treatment for patients with metastasized colorectal cancer was retrospectively analyzed in one center. Tumor progression had occurred for the majority of patients during two regimens (n = 11) otherwise during one (n = 1) regimen of prior 5-FU-based chemotherapy, which had been applied in a standardized sequential fashion. As third-line therapy oxaliplatin was infused intravenously over 2 h at a dose of 60 mg/m2 prior to a 2-h infusion of FA (500 mg/m2). 5-FU (2,600 mg/m2) was subsequently given over 24 h. A favorable response was observed in 9/12 (75%) of the heavily pret…
Evaluation of serum copper and iron levels among oral submucous fibrosis patients
2010
Objective: To estimate and compare the levels of serum copper and iron among subjects with oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) of different clinical stages and healthy controls. Study Design: Study sample comprised of 50 patients clinically diagnosed with OSMF and 50 healthy controls who were matched for age and gender. OSMF patients were categorised by clinical staging. Serum estimation of copper and iron was done using atomic absorbtion spectrophotometry. Results: Mean copper and iron level differed significantly (p<0.000) between the patients and controls with patients exhibiting higher copper (134.1±20.16) and lower iron (114.78±23.47) levels in contrast to controls who presented lower coppe…
Effect of resistance training regimens on treadmill running and neuromuscular performance in recreational endurance runners.
2011
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of heavy resistance, explosive resistance, and muscle endurance training on neuromuscular, endurance, and high-intensity running performance in recreational endurance runners. Twenty-seven male runners were divided into one of three groups: heavy resistance, explosive resistance or muscle endurance training. After 6 weeks of preparatory training, the groups underwent an 8-week resistance training programme as a supplement to endurance training. Before and after the 8-week training period, maximal strength (one-repetition maximum), electromyographic activity of the leg extensors, countermovement jump height, maximal speed in the maximal ana…
Fatigue and Recovery After High-Intensity Exercise Part I: Neuromuscular Fatigue
2004
The contribution of central and peripheral factors to muscle fatigue were quantified following a high-intensity uphill running exercise. Eight male volunteers performed an intermittent exercise at 120 % of maximal aerobic speed on a treadmill with an 18 % grade. Electrically evoked and voluntary contractions of the knee extensors and EMG of the two vastii were analyzed before and immediately after the high-intensity exercise. Isometric maximal voluntary contraction decreased slightly (-7+/-8 %; p < 0.05) after exercise but no changes were found in the level of maximal activation or in the torque produced by a 80 Hz maximal stimulation applied to the femoral nerve. Following exercise, the si…
A new method for the evaluation of anaerobic running power in athletes.
1993
A new maximal anaerobic running power (MARP) test was developed. It consisted of n.20-s runs on a treadmill with a 100-s recovery between the runs. During the first run the treadmill speed was 3.97 m.s-1 and the gradient 5 degrees. The speed of the treadmill was increased by 0.35 m.s-1 for each consecutive run until exhaustion. The height of counter-movement jumps and blood lactate concentration ([la-]b) were measured after each run. Submaximal ([la-]b = 3 mmol.l-1 and 10 mmol.l-1) and maximal speed and power (W3mmol, W10mmol and Wmax, respectively) were calculated and W was expressed in oxygen equivalents according to the American College of Sports Medicine equation. Thirteen male athletes…
Effects of marathon running on running economy and kinematics.
2000
The present study was designed to investigate interactions between running economy and mechanics before, during, and after an individually run marathon. Seven experienced triathletes performed a 5-min submaximal running test on a treadmill at an individual constant marathon speed. Heart rate was monitored and the expired respiratory gas was analyzed. Blood samples were drawn to analyze serum creatine kinase activity (S-CK), skeletal troponin I (sTnI), and blood lactate (B-La). A video analysis was performed (200 frames · s−1) to investigate running mechanics. A kinematic arm was used to determine the external work of each subject. The results of the present study demonstrate that after the …
The effects of creatine supplementation on muscular performance and body composition responses to short-term resistance training overreaching
2003
To determine the effects of creatine supplementation during short-term resistance training overreaching on performance, body composition, and resting hormone concentrations, 17 men were randomly assigned to supplement with 0.3 g/kg per day of creatine monohydrate (CrM: n=9) or placebo (P: n=8) while performing resistance exercise (5 days/week for 4 weeks) followed by a 2-week taper phase. Maximal squat and bench press and explosive power in the bench press were reduced during the initial weeks of training in P but not CrM. Explosive power in the bench press, body mass, and lean body mass (LBM) in the legs were augmented to a greater extent in CrM ( P<or=0.05) by the end of the 6-week period…
Efficacy and safety comparison of two amoxicillin administration schedules after third molar removal. A randomized, double-blind and controlled clini…
2009
Objective: The aim of this comparative double-blind, prospective, randomized, clinical trial was to evaluate two amoxicillin administration patterns. The first was a short prophylactic therapy and the second a long postoperative regimen. Study Design: The study population consisted of 160 patients who underwent mandibular third molar extraction. Patients were randomized into two equal groups. In group 1, 2 grams of amoxicillin were administered 1 hour before the procedure and 1 gram 6 hours after surgery. In group 2, patients received 1 gram of amoxicillin 6 hours after surgery followed by 1 gram every 8 hour for 4 days. All patients received the same number of tablets thanks to the use of …
